NEW DELHI: China is expected to avoid direct intervention in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, given the current geopolitical dynamics and tariff complexities, despite its longstanding alliance with Pakistan, according to former Army commander Lt Gen (retd) Rana Pratap Kalita.
"Following the Galwan 2020 incident, after extensive consultations between the two countries, the standoff at the last friction points was resolved," Lt Gen Kalita told PTI. "Since then, bilateral relations have improved, with discussions on direct flights and the resumption of the

."
Despite this progress, both India and China are grappling with rising US trade tariffs, which are impacting the global economy. As major manufacturing and consumer markets, both nations are particularly vulnerable to fluctuations in tariffs.
"Considering the complexities of geopolitics and the current situation, it's difficult to predict whether China will directly intervene in the instability caused by the Pahalgam incident. But for now, I don't foresee them getting directly involved," Kalita stated. He also acknowledged China's strategic interests in the region, highlighting the vulnerability of Pakistan's sea link and the importance of access to the Arabian Sea through Pakistan for China.
On the Bangladesh border, Kalita pointed to continuing vulnerabilities, particularly after the recent political changes in the country. "With the deposition of the Sheikh Hasina government, there has been a rise in anti-India sentiment in Bangladesh, driven by religious fundamentalists," he said.
The release of leaders from the terrorist group Ansarul Bangla and other such factions, following the establishment of the caretaker government, has contributed to growing anti-India sentiment in the region.
Kalita also noted the influence of senior Pakistani military officials, including the DG of the ISI, who recently met with key figures in Bangladesh, further complicating the security situation. The infiltration of Bangladeshi nationals, aimed at spreading Islamic fundamentalism in India's northeast, remains a significant concern, particularly in Assam and Tripura.
The strategic importance of the Siliguri corridor, crucial for northeast connectivity, was also highlighted as a vulnerable point. Additionally, the potential reestablishment of terrorist camps in Bangladesh, previously used by groups like ULFA, presents a continuing security challenge.
Despite these concerns, Kalita expressed confidence in India's preparedness. "Periodic threat assessments are carried out regularly, and response mechanisms are in place accordingly. I am confident in the Indian armed forces' readiness to address any situation," he said.
The recent tense situation between India-Pakistan comes after the deadly
Pahalgam attack
in which terrorists attacked tourists at Baisaran meadow on April 22, resulting in 26 fatalities, including one Nepali national, while many others sustained injuries. Following this incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a statement to track down the perpetrators "to the ends of the earth," which led to intensified security operations involving demolitions and encounters.
Following the attack, the government implemented several measures, including the suspension of the 1960
Indus Water Treaty
, reduction in diplomatic relations with Pakistan, and closure of the Attari checkpost.
Hostilities further intensified along the Line of Control (LoC) as Pakistan Army outposts commenced unprovoked small arms firing during the night of April 26-27. The Indian Army delivered an appropriate retaliatory response.

Pak hikes defence spending by 20% in budget amid tense relations with India

Pakistan on Tuesday increased its defence budget by 20 per cent, allocating PRs. 2,550 billion (USD 9 billion) for the fiscal year 2025-26, amid tensions with India. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb presented the PRs. (Pakistani Rupees) 17,573 billion worth federal budget for the fiscal year 2025–26 in the National Assembly. He also presented the budget document as a finance bill in the National Assembly. In his speech, the minister said that the government has 'decided to allocate PRs. 2,550 for the defence of the country'. He didn't provide any further details about the defence spending as traditionally the defence budget is not discussed by the parliament. Last year, the government allocated PRs. 2,122 billion for defence, reflecting a 14.98 per cent increase over PRs. 1,804 billion budgeted for the fiscal year 2023-24. 'This budget is being presented at a historic time when the nation showed unity [and] determination,' the minister said at the start while mentioning the recent Pak-India conflict. Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, with India carrying out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7. The on-ground hostilities from the Indian and Pakistan sides that lasted for four days ended with an understanding of stopping the military actions following talks between the directors general of military operations of both sides on May 10. The defence sector expenses are the second-biggest component of the annual expenditure after the debt payments. The government allocated PRs. 8,207 billion for debt servicing, which constitutes the single biggest expense. The increase in the defence expenditure is expected to get the broad support of the lawmakers during the budget debate and voting on the finance bill. Aurangzeb also announced a 4.2 per cent GDP growth target for the economy which is higher than the 2.7 per cent achieved in the current year ending on June 30. He said that debt and interest servicing would cost PRs. 8,207 billion. Other key expenses include PRs. 971 billion for civil administration, PRs. 1,186 billion for subsidies, PRs. 1,055 billion for pensions and PRs. 1,000 billion for the Public Sector Development Programme. He said that the target for inflation was 7.5 per cent and the fiscal deficit target was 3.9 per cent as the government also announced to contain the deficit and achieve a primary surplus. The minister said that the government has set an ambitious tax collection target for the Federal Board of Revenue at PRs. 14,131 billion, an 8.95 per cent increase from last year's goal. Aurangzeb said that the main success of the government was that inflation was reduced to 4.7 per cent in the outgoing fiscal whereas it was 29.2 per cent two years ago, while the government achieved a current account surplus of USD 1.5 billion. He said the forex reserves will touch USD 14 billion by the end of the year and remittances were expected to reach USD 38 billion.

Project Pelican: $50 Million Drug Bust Uncovers ISI-Khalistani Nexus In Canada, 7 South Asians Arrested

Last Updated: Top intelligence sources say the proceeds from these drug cartel activities finance anti-India initiatives, including protests and referendums. Seven South Asians, including several Sikhs, supported by ISI and Khalistani networks, have been arrested in Ontario, Canada. This arrest follows Peel Police's largest drug bust, seizing approximately $50 million worth of cocaine under the investigation titled Project Pelican. Project Pelican has unveiled a sophisticated transnational drug network with direct connections to ISI-backed Khalistani operatives in Canada. According to top Indian intelligence sources, this network represents a significant threat to North American security and India-Canada relations due to its involvement in drug trafficking, political lobbying, and terror funding. Peel Regional Police seized 479 kilograms of cocaine valued at $47.9 million and arrested nine individuals, including several of Punjabi origin. The drugs were smuggled from Mexico through US commercial trucking routes into Ontario, taking advantage of cross-border logistics. Critical interceptions occurred at the Ambassador Bridge (Windsor) and the Blue Water Bridge (Sarnia). Collaboration with US Homeland Security, the DEA, and the RCMP indicated connections to Mexican cartels and US-based distributors, prompting further investigations. A media release from Peel Regional Police stated that, with national and international partners, they had dismantled a transnational organised criminal network trafficking illicit drugs into the Greater Toronto Area. As of June 6, the following individuals have been arrested and charged in connection with the investigation, facing 35 charges related to firearm and drug offences: Intelligence sources highlight an ISI blueprint within this cartel, with ISI funding Khalistani groups in Canada to traffic Afghan heroin and Mexican cocaine. The proceeds from these activities finance anti-India initiatives, including protests and referendums. Groups such as the International Sikh Federation dominate the drug operations, collaborating with cartels to import heroin via Punjab and export refined drugs like cocaine and ICE to India. Khalistani elements have also infiltrated Canadian political circles, including the Liberal Party. ISI agents like Bilal Cheema are alleged to have financed politicians, while Khalistani leaders exploit immigration schemes to extort students for anti-India propaganda, say sources. This connection has been directly linked to Project Pelican, initiated by law enforcement agencies. Punjabi gangs with Khalistani ties control cross-border trucking in Canada, a vital channel for Project Pelican's drug seizures, sources suggest. These drugs move through routes connected to Punjabi-dominated logistics hubs in Peel. In a similar case in Toronto in 2021, Punjabi-origin gangsters were found smuggling cocaine via Mexico-US-Canada routes, showcasing patterns akin to Project Pelican. Project Pelican's $47.9 million seizure indicates a potential financing channel for Khalistani activities. Intelligence sources confirm that drug profits are used to fund weapons, propaganda, and ISI-backed operations.

ED raids premises linked to Congress MP E Tukaram, 3 MLAs in Karnataka ST corporation scam case

The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday conducted searches at premises linked to Congress MP from Ballari E Tukaram and three MLAs in Karnataka in a case about alleged irregularities in the state Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation, PTI reported. Five locations in Ballari and three in Bengaluru belonging to Tukaram and the three MLAs – the Congress' Nara Bharath Reddy, JN Ganesh and NT Srinivas – were being searched under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, the news agency quoted unidentified officials as saying. Commenting on the searches, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the state government would not support any violation of the law nor come in the way of its implementation, PTI reported. 'Let them do whatever they want in accordance with the law…We won't obstruct it,' he said. The case pertains to the alleged misappropriation of funds belonging to the state Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation. The matter came to light in May 2024 after its accounts superintendent, Chandrashekhar, died by suicide. In a note left behind, Chandrasekhar alleged that funds to the tune of Rs 187 crore had been transferred from the corporation's bank account. A Special Investigation Team set up by the Karnataka government is looking into the allegations of misappropriation of funds. The team has arrested 14 persons in the case, including two officials of the corporation – managing director Padmanabha GJ and accounts officer Parashuram Dugganavar, The Indian Express reported. The Enforcement Directorate has also claimed that Rs 20.19 crore of the funds siphoned from the Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation was used to support the Tukaram's campaign from Ballari constituency during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
