Trump, Putin set to hold news conference early, after three hours of talks
The news conference was originally scheduled at the end of the talks that were expected to go in phases.
Instead of the originally scheduled direct talks to be followed by another with officials, they started off with two officials on each side.
Another luncheon meeting with a bigger group of officials was to follow, and it now appears the news conference is coming after the first meeting.
It is not clear if the larger meeting will follow the news conference.
Trump had indicated that the joint news conference will take place if they make headway in the talks, but only with him if it failed.
The stage at the press conference is set for both of them to speak with mike checks on both podiums.
Setting the "high stakes" for the summit, Trump told a Fox News interviewer on board the Air Force 1 heading to Alaska, "I won't be happy if I walk away without some form of a ceasefire."
"This is really setting the table today," he said.
"We're going to have another meeting, if things work out, which will be very soon, or we're not going to have any more meetings at all, maybe ever."
Trump's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were at his side when the talks began, while Putin's foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov, Defence Minister Andrei Belousoy, and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov were ranged on the other side.
The official Russian news agency Tass said that as the two leaders left the room for the news conference, Putin talked to his Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov.
Russian state media quoted Ambassador to the US Alexander Darchiev as saying the atmosphere around the discussions was "generally positive".
It has been seven years since Russian President Vladimir Putin stood alongside an American President to take questions. The last time was in Helsinki in 2018, during the now-infamous press conference where Donald Trump appeared to side with Russia over US intelligence agencies on election interference.
When Joe Biden met Putin in Geneva in 2021, he chose not to hold a joint press conference, instead taking questions alone, a move aimed, in part, at denying Putin a platform to shape the narrative of their talks.

Protests in Jalgaon after statue desecration
Nashik: Residents of a Jalgaon village, within Pahur police station's jurisdiction, took to the streets on Aug 15 after a statue of a prominent Indian politician was found desecrated in the market area at 7.30 am on Friday. Protests were also staged by a political party in front of the Jalgaon district collector's office, demanding strict action against those involved in the desecration. Additional SP Kavita Nerkar said, acting on a tip-off, a 50-year-old man from the same village where the incident took place was arrested by the Pahur police and charged under sections 298 (injuring or defiling a place of worship), 299 (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings), and 196 (promoting enmity and hatred between different groups based on religion, race), among other sections of the BNS. Police officers said the suspect was produced before a court on Friday, which remanded him to three-day police custody. The police are investigating whether more people were involved in the act. The incident came to light at 7.30 am on Friday. Soon after the news spread, people in the village went to the police station and demanded strict action. CJI Gavai to inaugurate Bombay high court's circuit bench at Kolhapur today
Kolhapur: The much-anticipated inauguration of the Bombay high court's circuit bench at Kolhapur is set to take place on Aug 17, Sunday. Chief Justice of India B R Gavai is scheduled to inaugurate the circuit bench, located opposite CPR Hospital in Kolhapur, at 3pm. The event will be attended by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis , deputy chief ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar , and Chief Justice of the Bombay HC Alok Aradhe, followed by an inaugural public address at Merryweather Ground at 3.40pm. CJI Gavai reached the Kolhapur airport on Saturday at 6pm. Gavai was welcomed by Justice Makarand Karnik, Justice Shivkumar Dighe, Justice Sharmila Deshmukh and Justice S G Chapalgaonkar, who have been appointed by the Bombay HC for the Kolhapur circuit bench. Deputy CM Ajit Pawar also reached Kolhapur on Saturday. Addressing reporters, Pawar said, "Kolhapur will get new glory and importance due to this circuit bench. Nandkumar More, city traffic branch inspector, said, "From Sunday 9am until the inauguration ceremony concludes in the evening, the roads leading to CPR Hospital and Merryweather Ground will remain closed for vehicular traffic. Traffic coming from Bhawani Mandap towards CPR Hospital will be diverted from Malkar Tikti, whereas traffic coming from Station Road will be diverted from Venus Corner chowk via Laxmipuri. Parking spots have been created at 15 different places, which can accommodate 2,400 vehicles." Kolhapur Municipal Corporation is carrying out the work on cleaning the city, paving the main roads leading to the circuit bench using the paver method, pruning tree branches, cleaning gutters, and patchwork over potholes on a war footing. A fund of Rs 80 lakh is being spent on this, and Rs 5 lakh is allocated for concreting and guttering in the circuit bench area. The electricity department is conducting street light repair work on the road from Shahu toll naka to Merryweather Ground. On Saturday Gavai visited the memorial of Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj and offered his tributes to the legendary king. He was accompanied by MP Shahu Chhatrapati on the occasion.
