Shubman Gill breaks silence on Jasprit Bumrah's availability for 2nd Test: 'He is surely available but...'
Jul 01, 2025 05:55 PM IST India captain Shubman Gill confirmed Jasprit Bumrah is available for selection for the second Test against England at Edgbaston, beginning Wednesday, July 2. However, the final call on his participation will be taken later in the day once the team management has reviewed the 22 yards dished out for the contest. The 31-year-old will be playing just three Tests in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, as it was confirmed earlier. India captain Shubman Gill confirmed Jasprit Bumrah is available for selection for the second Test against England at Edgbaston. (AP) The No.1-ranked ICC Test bowler, Bumrah, dished out 43.4 overs in the series opener in Headingley. There was daylight between Bumrah and the rest of the seamers (Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur). The rest of the three pacers conceded runs at a brisk pace and were unable to create any sort of pressure. Bumrah took five wickets in the first innings but failed to take a single wicket in the second innings. Shubman Gill seemingly managed Bumrah's workload in the middle of the Test, as he was not asked to bowl even when England were 85 runs away from the target of 371. 'Bumrah is surely available. We have to look into this workload management. We have to look into the final combination today at the nets,' Gill told reporters on the pre-match press conference on Tuesday. (More to follow…)

India vs England Test: Team works overtime to set the right field
India's Ravindra Jadeja takes part in a nets session at Edgbaston, in Birmingham, England, Monday June 30, 2025. AP/PTI(AP06_30_2025_000113B) Birmingham: Team India's training session at Edgbaston started with the usual warmup fielding drills, but there was a distinctive spike in the intensity after around 15 minutes. Usually, two days ahead of a Test match, fielding practice is restricted to ordinary drills, merely to enable the players to get a feel of the ball in their hands. Monday, however, was a different story. It was apparent that the forgettable fielding performance in the first Test had touched a nerve in the camp. A large portion of the reason behind the heartbreak at Headingley last week could be attributed to multiple dropped catches. Yashasvi Jaiswal 's sub-standard days in the field somehow overshadowed a superlative century that got India off to a strong start in the series. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! On Monday, before fielding coach T Dilip started the regular slip-catching session, he arranged a 'blind-catching' drill. He put a black sheet up to the height of the chest of the players and started hurling catches from the other side, with the balls deviating off an inclined equipment and travelling under the sheet to the players on the other side. The drill went on for a good 10 minutes before Dilip arranged his slip cordon alongside wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant for fast bowlers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Start Here - 2025 Top Trend Local network access control Esseps Learn More Undo The noticeable absentee in the cordon was Jaiswal. Edgbaston Preview | Yashasvi Jaiswal faces the brunt, exits slip cordon The slip cordon set by Dilip had Karun Nair at first slip, KL Rahul at second, Shubman Gill at third with Sai Sudharsan and Nitish Kumar Reddy swapping places at fourth slip and gully. 'We always want depth in the catching department in England. You are always going to have four catchers at some stage in the game. Yashasvi has been a very good catcher for us. We want to manage his confidence,' Team India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said after the training session on Monday. Jaiswal and Abhimanyu Easwaran were subjected to a rigorous session of close-in catching, with helmets on, likely for the spinners, with Doeschate himself carrying out the drill. He pointed out the need for steady close-in catchers. 'There is also an argument for short-leg being a very important position, particularly if you are going to play two spinners. We want more catchers in that position. We are looking at being a versatile fielding unit with more guys doing more jobs and maybe just to give you Yashasvi a break from catching at gully for a little while. His hands are quite sore. We want to get his confidence back up,' Doeschate said. The standard of fielding, it is clear, has become a massive point of discussion within the team.

IND vs ENG, 2nd Test predicted playing XI: Jasprit Bumrah to be rested? Two spinners to play against England at Edgbaston
India captain Shubman Gill, left and Jasprit Bumrah speak during a nets session at Edgbaston (AP Photo) As India prepare for the second Test at Edgbaston on Wednesday, all eyes are on the team management's selection decisions following the frustrating defeat in Leeds. The key dilemma: how to take 20 wickets on another batter-friendly surface while maintaining depth in the batting order. With Jasprit Bumrah potentially being rested as part of a pre-planned workload strategy, the pace attack is likely to see changes. Mohammed Siraj should lead the bowling unit, supported by the promising Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna. The absence of Bumrah, who was India's sharpest bowler in the first Test, will place added pressure on this trio to deliver more consistency in their lengths. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The Edgbaston pitch, though green on top, has a dry layer underneath, which means spinners will eventually come into play. India are expected to go in with two spinners this time. Ravindra Jadeja is a certain starter, and with Washington Sundar bringing control and batting depth, the management could once again overlook Kuldeep Yadav's attacking edge that India sorely missed in Leeds. Poll Should Jasprit Bumrah be rested for the second Test at Edgbaston? Yes, it's important to manage his workload No, India needs his experience Unsure, depends on the condition of the pitch Kuldeep's inclusion, however, would signal a shift away from a conservative strategy. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Secure Your Child's Future with Strong English Fluency Planet Spark Learn More Undo In the all-rounder slot, Nitish Reddy may get nod, replacing Shardul Thakur, who struggled at Headingley. While Thakur's omission might seem harsh after just one match, India needs greater control and batting stability down the order. India's XI Puzzle Ahead of 2nd Test | Jaiswal Shifted, Kuldeep or Bumrah? The batting core remains intact with Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul opening, followed by Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant. Karun Nair, having made his comeback in the Leeds Test, might have to sit out to give the India team a balanced look at Edgbaston. Despite modest returns in the first Test, Sai Sudharsan is expected to retain his place, with India likely to persist with their long-term potential. With England refining their "Bazball" into a more calculated assault and their pacers growing in confidence, India must respond with a sharper, bolder selection – one geared toward picking 20 wickets, not just surviving the game. England Confirmed XI vs India: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (captain), Jamie Smith (WK), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir. India's predicted XI vs England: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill (captain), Rishabh Pant (wk, vc), Nitish Reddy, Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep.
