India captain Shubman Gill confirmed Jasprit Bumrah is available for selection for the second Test against England at Edgbaston, beginning Wednesday, July 2. However, the final call on his participation will be taken later in the day once the team management has reviewed the 22 yards dished out for the contest. The 31-year-old will be playing just three Tests in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, as it was confirmed earlier. The No.1-ranked ICC Test bowler, Bumrah, dished out 43.4 overs in the series opener in Headingley. There was daylight between Bumrah and the rest of the seamers (Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur). The rest of the three pacers conceded runs at a brisk pace and were unable to create any sort of pressure.
Bumrah took five wickets in the first innings but failed to take a single wicket in the second innings. Shubman Gill seemingly managed Bumrah's workload in the middle of the Test, as he was not asked to bowl even when England were 85 runs away from the target of 371.
'Bumrah is surely available. We have to look into this workload management. We have to look into the final combination today at the nets,' Gill told reporters on the pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

Questions galore: India face last-minute Bumrah call as they mull over second spinner in bid to level England series

India faces crucial decisions for the second Test against England, primarily concerning Jasprit Bumrah's workload and the bowling attack composition. After a first Test defeat, India ponders whether to risk Bumrah or manage him for later matches, while also considering changes to the other pacers and the inclusion of a second spinner. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads There are questions galore for India ahead of the second Test at Edgbaston, starting today, and expectedly almost all of them are about bowlers and bowling biggest question for India is whether to risk playing Jasprit Bumrah or save their most precious -- and injury-prone -- bowler for later Tests. If he sits out, who will replace him? Who else will be replaced, given the other three pacers were ineffective and expensive, and by whom? Will they stick with a lone spinner or add a second, considering the hot weather and a dry Birmingham pitch?A five-Test series, especially away from home, is challenging. Even more so when the home side has edged ahead 1-0 after a thrilling chase on a fifth-day pitch. As a result, while the triumphant England are confident enough to go into the second Test unchanged, defeated India are still pondering over the choices they need to the most important decision they have to make is about Bumrah's workload. Even before India landed in England, it was already decided that he will play on three of the five Tests. India are being cautious about his workload as he could not take the load of five Tests in a row in Australia and suffered a stress fracture in his back that kept him away from cricket for a couple of months, missing the Champions Trophy.'Bumrah is definitely available [for selection]. We are just going to see how to manage his workload in the upcoming Test matches,' captain Shubman Gill said. 'We just thought we would take a final look once we come to the ground and see what kind of combination that we want to go with tomorrow.'Bumrah is a maverick. His presence lifts the potential of the playing XI several notches up. The obsessiveness with which his availability for the second Test has been discussed over the last few days shows how valuable he no matter what anybody likes to believe and tell others, one player doesn't win you a Test match. Even if that player is Bumrah. In the last five overseas Tests, in all of which Bumrah played and took 29 wickets, including three 5-fors, India lost four and drew India take care of other factors that contributed to their loss, they will find it difficult to make a comeback in the series. Top of the list is their catching abilities, but also the negligible contribution from the lower-order – just 5 in first innings and 4 in second by India's No. 8 to 11. In contrast, England's lower order added 72 in the first plan to shore up their batting by favouring Shardul Thakur over better bowlers like Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh backfired badly. Thakur scored just 5 runs in two innings and was trusted to bowl only 16 of the 160 overs India bowled in the match — all other bowlers bowled 40-plus overs bowlers struggled too. Prasidh Krishna (5/220) took as many wickets as Bumrah but leaked too many runs. Mohammed Siraj provided better control but didn't take into the second Test, if India are serious about taking 20 wickets, they need five specialist bowlers. They have options on the bench. Akash Deep can provide both control and swing. Arshdeep Singh can bring a left-armer's angle that's always an Yadav's wrist spin and variety could be an attacking option on a pitch that's dry underneath and is expected to assist spinners in the second half of the Test. There is Washington Sundar, who bowls at a similar pace as Jadeja but turns it in opposite direction. He can also bat, much better than to forget Nitish Kumar Reddy, who was India's second highest run-getter in Australia behind Yashasvi Jaiswal. And unlike, Karun Nair and Sai Sudharsan, he can provide a few overs of seam bowling – a sixth bowling option wouldn't selection for the second Test will reflect not just tactical adjustments, but also whether they've truly learned from their mistakes in the opener.

"Second spinner won't be bad option if...": Indian skipper Gill ahead of Birmingham Test

Birmingham [UK], July 1 (ANI): Ahead of the second Test against England, Indian skipper Shubman Gill said that the strategy to play two spinners would not be a 'bad option' if the wicket is the same as the previous Test match at Leeds. Going into the second Test at Birmingham, India is trailing 0-1. During the last game, India failed to defend a 371-run set, with four fast bowling options in Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur, and Mohammed Siraj, and only one spinner in Ravindra Jadeja. The fast bowlers, except for Bumrah, leaked runs at a high economy, costing India the match as much as their poor low-order batting. In the squad, India has spin bowling options in all-rounder Washington Sundar and an attacking, wicket-taking Kuldeep Yadav, besides Jadeja. Speaking on whether the team could play a second spinner at Birmingham, Gill said during the pre-match presser, 'It is not common to see two spinners in England. But the weather was not typical.' 'It rained a lot and the sun was shining. In the last match also, if we had an extra spinner in the 4th inning, the game could have been better. There were some patches in the wicket which we could have exploited,' he added. During the match, Gill said whenever Jadeja was bowling, the team felt that they were containing chances, and it was much easier for spinners to contain runs as compared to pacers, especially with the ball getting old and stopping swinging. 'The wickets were also good for batting. So, if the fast bowlers are not creating enough chances for the fast bowlers, then we feel that maybe a second spinner on these kinds of wickets will at least contain a run till the second new ball comes. So, looking at the last match, I felt that if the wicket is going to be similar to how it was in the last match, then a second spinner would be a bad option,' he concluded. India's Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.
