Beware 'two-metre Messi'! Meet the 6ft 6in starlet aiming to fire Germany to U21 glory against England

Daily Mail27-06-2025
Two years ago Nick Woltemade found himself on the bench in the third division of German football.
Now he is being pursued by Bayern Munich and has the chance to break English hearts on Saturday night.
Woltemade, 23, or Woltemessi as his Stuttgart team-mates call him, is deceiving in that his 6ft 6in frame does not tell the story of his capabilities.
There is a grace and elegance to his technique on the ball which has drawn comparisons with Jamal Musiala, and his pace and dribbling are also typical of a tricky winger a foot shorter.
'His combination of skills is special; you rarely see that,' Stuttgart boss Sebastian Hoeness has said of Woltemade, this tournament's top scorer with six goals.
'He has very fast feet, good ball control and strong dribbling.'
Although he dislikes his Messi nicknames — two-metre Messi is another — he is unique among Germany's young stars.
His six goals here have varied: three with his right foot, one with his left and two with his head.
Useful as a second striker, as an all-out No 9 or playing at No 10, England's toughest assignment has been saved for the final.

Chelsea reject European giants loan offer for out-of-favour star - as Blues insist on permanent move to fund for attacker

Chelsea have rebuffed Bayern Munich 's attempt to sign forward Christopher Nkunku on loan. Chelsea and the player would prefer a permanent move and talks are ongoing. The Blues want to offload Nkunku, Nicolas Jackson, Carney Chukwuemeka and Ben Chilwell among others before bringing in a wide player and an attacking midfielder. Manchester United 's Alejandro Garnacho, Xavi Simons of RB Leipzig and Manchester City 's Savinho, who is a target for Tottenham, have been discussed to varying degrees. The London club made an underwhelming start to the Premier League season as Crystal Palace ground out a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. After a truncated pre-season following victory in the Club World Cup, everything pointed to a Chelsea side lacking both preparation and rest as Oliver Glasner 's team coped relative easily with a new-look yet disjointed attack. Eberechi Eze started for Palace despite speculation he is about to leave and, if there were doubts about how supporters felt about the player whose goal won them the FA Cup in May, they were dispelled when he was substituted to a standing ovation late on. The England international provided the game with its only major talking point, lashing in a brilliant free-kick in the first half that was ruled out after Marc Guehi obstructed Chelsea's wall, drawing a furious response from Palace fans. As expected, Nicolas Jackson was not in Enzo Maresca's squad after being made surplus to requirements, with Newcastle considering a bid, while Joao Pedro was preferred at number nine to fellow new signing Liam Delap. Chelsea were playing 35 days after their win over Paris St Germain in the Club World Cup final in the United States and showed signs of mental fatigue in a first-half display low on creativity.

It's all well and good spending £200million on Sesko and Co. but Arsenal defeat exposes a HUGE hole Man Utd need to fill

MANCHESTER UNITED have splashed the cash this summer but the goalkeeper position remains a concern. Here are SunSport's key takeaways from the narrow 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal. 2 2 No 1 ISSUE United have been linked with Gianluigi Donnarumma and David de Gea in recent weeks, and surely they will sign a keeper before the window shuts. Ruben Amorim has faith in Andre Onana — even if a lot of the fans do not — but he did not consider him ready to start here. The Cameroonian has missed the whole of pre-season with a hamstring injury. So Altay Bayindir, who has played throughout the build-up to the season, got the nod — and ended up costing his team the game. He should have been stronger under pressure from William Saliba and flapped a corner on to the head of Riccardo Calafiori. Bayindir has had problems with set-pieces before. Amorim and sporting director Jason Wilcox have two weeks to come up with a solution before the end of the transfer window. NO GOALS — AGAIN United mustered just 44 goals in the Prem last season — and here they were starting with a blank again. The Red Devils have spent £200million sprucing up their forward line this summer, and there were encouraging signs from Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. Ex-Prem ref says there was no foul on Man Utd's goalkeeper by William Saliba during Arsenal loss But new £74m centre-forward Benjamin Sesko stayed on the bench until the 65th minute. On a couple of occasions before then there were crosses into the box but nobody there to put them away. Amorim said on Friday he believes Sesko can be United's No 9 for many years to come — and that is why they spent so heavily on him. So it seemed a strange call to leave him on the bench for so long. Clearly the fans agreed as he was given a huge ovation when he arrived. A couple of late half-chances went begging but the Slovenian did enough to show he will be a threat. MIDFIELD STILL AN ISSUE United have abandoned their bid to land Carlos Baleba at least until next summer because of Brighton's asking price. There is an interest in Sporting's Morten Hjulmand, while United are one of several clubs who admire Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace. But there is a chance they will not sign another outfield player, and fans will be worried about the options in midfield. Casemiro was excellent in Europe last season but did not have the same impact in Prem matches, while we are still waiting to see the best of Manuel Ugarte. United are going to be more exciting to watch this season — that is clear already — but will they still have a soft centre?

Sky Sports pundits split over Premier League title winner after predicting their top five - as Roy Keane names key to Liverpool retaining their title

insisted Liverpool will need to bring more players in if they are to retain their Premier League title this season. Following Arsenal 's win over Man United on Sunday, Keane and fellow Sky Sports pundits Micah Richards and Daniel Sturridge were tasked with giving their predictions for the 2025-26 campaign. The trio each selected a top five, but none could agree on which team will have their hands on the trophy come the end of May. In his predictions, Keane backed Mikel Arteta to finally get Arsenal over the hump and claim the title after three consecutive second-placed finishes. Keane then placed Liverpool second, followed by Man City and Newcastle, with Chelsea rounding out his top five. The usually unwavering Irishman qualified his prediction however, by noting that Liverpool will be able to make it two wins on the bounce if they are able to bolster their squad before the end of the transfer window. 'Depending on signings, if we're allowed to change our mind, I'm convinced that Liverpool can get another centre half then I would go with Liverpool,' Keane said on Sky Sports. The Reds have enjoyed a productive summer in the transfer market as Arne Slot looks to build on the success of his first year on Merseyside. Hugo Ekitike has already made an impact for the Reds alongside marquee arrival Florian Wirtz and the club are understood to be still pursuing a move for wantaway Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. As far as defensive reinforcements are concerned, the club have been repeatedly linked with a move for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi. Meanwhile former Man City defender Richards backed his boyhood club to return to the top of the mountain after a poor campaign by their standards last season. However, Keane insisted that he feels Pep Guardiola's side still time to get back to their best. 'I never usually bet against Pep and City,' Keane added. 'I just think maybe defensively, and I know that they've thrown James Trafford in there, and I think he's a really top goalkeeper but I just have that gut feeling that I think Arsenal might do it this year. 'But as I said, I think if Liverpool get a center half, and I would definitely change my mind on Liverpool. 'Even looking at Liverpool, sometimes when Liverpool aren't even added, or even City, when they're not at their best, they'll still score two or three goals.' Sturridge joined Richards in claiming one of his former clubs will go all the way, as the ex-Liverpool striker claimed the Reds have what it takes. Like Keane though, the 35-year-old claimed that the club would benefit from bolstering their squad depth. '[Liverpool] a strong squad, but I do think they need maybe one or two additions to strengthen up.' Sturridge said. 'I think they need a defender, and, of course, one more attacker. They're a little bit short in both of those areas.'
