Woolpit and Horringer choirs revive forgotten Easter cantata
Two choirs have come together to revive a piece of Easter music rediscovered by their musical director as he was sorting through his father's music scores. Gethsemane to Calvary was composed in 1906 by John S Witty, a composer and teacher from Yorkshire who appears to have "fallen into obscurity". Kevin Slingsby, director of the Suffolk-based Horringer Singers and Tudor Rose Singers, said: "The more I looked at it, the more I liked it - it's got some nice moments." It will be performed at St Mary's Church, Woolpit, near Stowmarket, at 19:00 BST, and at St Leonard's Church, Horringer, near Bury St Edmunds, on Wednesday.
"My first thought was, let's look it up and see if any scores are available online - but all I could find was two had been sold on Ebay," said Mr Slingsby."I then thought, well, someone will have performed it on YouTube, everything's there, but there was nothing at all."The 68-year-old retired music teacher unearthed two scores for the cantata among his father Geoffrey's music - one marked up by his grandmother Dolly and the other by Geoffrey. Dolly Slingsby was a member of St John's Church, Bury St Edmunds, and by the early 1930s, Geoffrey was one of its boy singers."Looking through, I could see my grandmother's writing in pencil, saying, 'stand' or 'sit' - and I surmised it must have been performed at St John's in the '30s," said Mr Slingsby.
All he could find out about Mr Witty online was a census return, describing him as a teacher and composer of music who had been born in 1865 in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, and lived most of his life in Hull and Bradford, Yorkshire."I thought, the piece must have fallen into obscurity, let's do it," he said - and the amateur choirs agreed. It shows influences of well-known Easter pieces like Stainer's The Crucifixion (1887) or John Maunder's Olivet de Calgary (1904), according to Mr Slingsby. "But unlike Stainer, it tells the whole Easter story from Gethsemane to the triumphal Resurrection," he said. "Sometimes, the more you do music, the more it grows on you and this has grown on me - and it seems to have hit the spot with the choirs."

In Molly-Mae's latest vlog which was uploaded to YouTube just 15 hours ago, the Love Island star turned businesswoman shared the new high-street beauty buy she can't get enough of. As she took off her make-up, the Filter founder, who lives in a huge £3.5million mansion, gave her honest thoughts on the Aveeno Face Foaming Make Up Removing Cleanser. The purse-friendly beauty product, which is currently on offer at Superdrug and has been slashed from £12.99 down to only £8.65, is dermatologist tested and removes make-up in an instant. Thrilled with the affordable find, the blonde beauty who recently got back together with Tommy Fury, 26, explained: 'Make-up day or no make-up day, there's only one cleanser that I'm using consistently, day in and day out - I've been using for a good few months now and it's this one from Aveeno. 'As you guys know, the Oat Gel Moisturiser is one of my absolute favourites so I wanted to do a little bit more digging on the range and see if I was going to love any of the products from the same range as much as I love this one. 'I find that so many cleansers dry my skin out and what I love most about this Aveeno one is that it doesn't do that. 'It maintains the moisture on my skin, it doesn't dry me out. 'It's such a good make-up remover as well, I had a really hard waterproof mascara on my lashes the other day - used this and it literally swiped it straight off.' The content creator who boasts 1.9million subscribers on YouTube and has a jaw-dropping £6million fortune, then shared an honest confession about her skin troubles, as she expressed: 'It is so good, it's fragrance-free and it's really good for sensitive skin which is great because for me right now, my eczema has actually flared back up. Molly-Mae Hague reveals the £18 secret to her summer glow - and you can get it even cheaper if you hurry 'I'm having pigmentation issues again and flare-ups with my eczema which is less than ideal. 'But right now, any product that's good for sensitive skin is calling my name.' I had a really hard waterproof mascara on my lashes the other day - used this and it literally swiped it straight off Molly-Mae Hague After using the cleanser, the mum-of-one beamed: 'My skin just feels so unbelievably clean, it feels like it really gets the grub and dirt out of my pores. 'That's cleanser done. My skin literally feels brand new. 'I think it's easy to forget that sometimes some of the best skincare products aren't actually crazily priced and you don't have to spend loads to get products that just really work.' Biggest skincare trends for 2025 Face The Future's Head of Clinic, Kimberley Medd, shared the five skincare trends predicted to take off in 2025. 1. Exosomes Exosomes are the buzzword for 2025, taking advanced skin regeneration to new heights. These micro-messengers signal skin cells to repair damage, boost collagen, and accelerate recovery, and they're a gamechanger for targeting ageing. 2. Streamlined Skincare The age of 12-step routines is fading as consumers shift to more intentional, multi-functional products. Streamlining skincare not only saves time but also reduces the risk of overloading your skin. In 2025, we'll see a rise in hybrid products that combine active ingredients for simplified, effective results. 3. Vegan Collagen Plant-based collagen will dominate the skincare world this year, providing a sustainable, ethical alternative to traditional animal-derived collagen. Expect vegan collagen in everything from moisturisers to serums. 4. The Rise Of AI AI is revolutionising the beauty landscape, making it possible for consumers to get truly personalised skincare solutions. In 2025, we predict a dramatic shift towards AI-powered tools that help people understand their skin on a deeper level. 5. Hair Loss Solutions - Hair loss is an issue that affects more men than we often realise, and it's no longer just something we're talking about behind closed doors. This year, expect to see a continued rise in demand for treatments that not only tackle hair loss but also nurture overall scalp health. Not only did Molly-Mae describe the cleanser as her 'current go-to' product for 'quick skincare' that makes her "feel 10/10', but she also acknowledged that it makes her feel 'so clean, so fresh, so moisturised, so soothed.' Beauty fans beam And it's clear that Molly-Mae, who recently opened up on 'destroying' her face during her filler phase, isn't the only person who loves the Aveeno buy, as it has currently racked up an average rating of 4.5 out of five on the Superdrug website. One person said: 'I loved this product! Firstly you get a really good amount for the price, a little goes a long way so I can see this bottle lasting some time! I've switched out my usual cleanser for this Aveeno product and I'm so impressed I don't think I'll be switching back! I'm having pigmentation issues again and flare-ups with my eczema which is less than ideal Molly-Mae Hague 'I didn't find it dried out my skin nor did I feel it left any kind of greasy feel and removed my make-up effortlessly! It has a slight clean smell, nothing too strong and feels very gentle on my skin!' Another added: 'Very moisturising and calming on my extremely sensitive skin. 'My face looks radiant and more smooth just after a few uses! It has a rich and soft lather which is perfect to remove makeup too.' A third commented: 'I love that this cleanser also removes all my make-up. My usual make-up remover leaves my face feeling oily so I cleanse afterwards. 'This is an all in one so saves time and space in the bathroom. Left my face feeling clean and not greasy or dry.' Jared Leto denies allegations of sexual misconduct from nine women
Jared Leto is facing allegations of sexual misconduct from several women, including some who were teens at the time. The Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman has been accused of inappropriate behaviour by nine women over a period of two decades. These claims involve alleged victims who say they were teenagers when the incidents occurred. According to an exposé published by Air Mail, the matter has 'been an open secret for a long time.' Representatives for the 53-year-old House of Gucci star have denied all the accusations to the publication. The claims against Leto resurfaced after a Los Angeles-based DJ, Allie Teilz, re-shared a post on Facebook from 2012 to her Instagram Story. In it, the 30-year-old alleged she was assaulted by the star when she was 17. She alleges that Leto 'knew' how old she was but 'didn't care'. 'You're not really in LA until Jared Leto tries to force himself on you backstage… in a kilt… And a snow hat,' she wrote. 'I was assaulted and traumatized by this creep when I was 17.' Teilz also described Leto's actions as 'predatory, terrifying and unacceptable.' An unnamed alleged second victim also told Air Mail that she was 16 when Leto briefly spoke with her at Urth Caffé in LA. Taking place in 2006, she alleges he got her phone number and called her days later. During the call, she says he sounded 'weird'. 'I don't know if he was on drugs or what… it was the weirdest, grossest voice… [but] for me, it's Jared, you know?' Claiming they would speak on the phone late at night, she says their conversations became 'sexual', with Leto asking if she'd 'ever had a boyfriend' and questions such as, 'Have you ever sucked a d**k?' A third accuser, Laura La Rue, 33, says she met Leto in 2008 at an animal rights event. At the time, he was 36 and she was 16. She says Leto asked what her age was, to which she responded. Despite knowing she was 16, she claims Leto still asked for her phone number, later inviting her over to his home in LA. There, he allegedly 'flirted' with and 'teased' her the 'whole time'. The model also claims that Leto was fully naked at one point and walked into the room as if it were 'normal'. 'I thought maybe this was just what adult men do.' A fourth woman, also anonymous, has said Leto approached her at an 18+ club when she was 20, where his assistant asked for her number. She said they 'hook[ed] up a little' at the nightclub and she visited his home several times afterwards. Echoing the second victim's descriptions, she also said Leto was 'weird'. 'I know some people are kinky, and that's fine,' she reasoned, but said 'his kind of kink … just didn't feel right.' Furthermore, a fifth alleged victim has said she and Leto exchanged flirtatious messages while she was underage. She allegedly also visited his home, where he would ask her questions of a sexual nature, including, 'Do any of the little boys you hang out with f**k you?' After she turned 18, their relationship was allegedly taken to another level. At one point, Leto is said to have 'pulled his penis out and started masturbating'. She says he put her hand on his penis and told her: 'I want you to spit on it.' In the original Air Mail piece, it is claimed that Leto was 'known' for taking an interest in younger women. One woman told the outlet: 'I remember being so physically ill to the point of throwing up when I passed billboards … for his films, and just wondering how everybody in LA knows.' A rep for Leto said to Air Mail: 'Their (the women's) communications contain nothing sexual or inappropriate and Ms. La Rue later applied to work as Mr. Leto's personal assistant, further underscoring the absence of anything inappropriate in any of their interactions.' La Rue denies ever applying to be Leto's PA. The actor's publicist also defends that he 'has not had a drink or used drugs in over 35 years', following claims that he hosted parties at his mansion attended by approximately 60 'very young women to four or five men'. It's claimed guests were encouraged to go skinny dipping at the events. Leto, now an Academy Award and Golden Globe winner, first achieved recognition in 1994 for his role as Jordan Catalano in the teen drama television series My So-Called Life. He went on to have supporting roles in Fight Club (1999), Girl, Interrupted (1999), and American Psycho (2000), before turning his focus to music. More Trending Leto returned to acting with the 2002 thriller Panic Room and had subsequent roles in major blockbusters Suicide Squad (2016) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017). Meanwhile, in 1998, he formed Thirty Seconds to Mars, a band that has gone on to sell 15million records worldwide. Relationship-wise, Leto was married to actress Cameron Diaz from 1999 to 2003, followed by Russian model Valery Kaufman from 2015 to 2022. Reps for Jared Leto have been contacted for comment.
