Orkney Assassin: New Amazon show to revisit night teen killed waiter in shocking racist murder
A new documentary will revisit the shocking racist murder of a Bangladeshi waiter in Orkney in 1994 – and the 14-year long investigation to convict teenage killer Michael Ross.
Ross was just 15 years old when he shot waiter Shamsuddin Mahmood in a racially motivated killing.
BAFTA-winning film-maker Matt Pinder will tell the story of the murder in a new feature-length true crime show on Amazon Prime.
Pinder, known for his trilogy The Hunt for… has covered notorious Scottish killers like Peter Tobin and Bible John.
His latest film Orkney Assassin: Murder in the Isles follows the 14-year hunt that led to Ross's conviction.
In June of 1994, a masked gunman entered Mumutaz, a busy curry house in Kirkwall, and fatally shot 27-year-old Shamsuddin Mahmood.
Mahmood had only been on the Orkney Islands for six weeks before the fatal shooting took place.
The 26-year-old was working as a waiter and planning to return home to Bangladesh to marry his fiancée.
Michael Ross, then 15, was interviewed by police after two witnesses saw him in similar clothes to the killer weeks earlier.
Ross admitted to having a balaclava, which he had disposed of by dropping into the sea. His friends also denied Ross's alibi for the night of the shooting.
Police also discovered disturbing Nazi imagery and racist slogans scrawled in his school books.
Although he was interviewed as a teenager a few months after the murder, Ross was not charged at the time.
It took more than a decade for police to uncover the truth and bring Ross to trial at the High Court.
In the years following the killing, Michael Ross joined the British Army and became a highly trained sniper. He became a sergeant in the Black Watch and was praised for bravery following a 2005 Iraq tour.
In 2008, a handwritten tip from a witness William Grant, placed Ross at the scene on the night of the murder. His statement reignited the case and led to a new trial.
Other witnesses testified that Ross expressed racist views as a teen and borrowed his father's firearms.
Michael Ross was finally convicted of the murder Shamsuddin Mahmood in 2008 and handed a minimum sentence of 25 years.
After the guilty verdict was read, Ross vaulted from the dock and attacked courtroom security.
He escaped into a court corridor before being tackled and restrained by officers.
Investigators later discovered Ross had parked a getaway car loaded with weapons near the court building.
The convicted killer also attempted to escape HMP Shotts prison with a homemade ladder in 2022.
Ross and his family have maintained his innocence in the murder and believe he was wrongfully convicted of the crime.
The Orkney Assassin: Murder in the Isles will be available on Prime Video in the UK & Ireland on June 8.

COPS have reportedly uncovered a plot to behead a British paratrooper, with army families warned to be "vigilant". The MOD confirmed it is aware of an "online threat". The Sun understands the plot is now being investigated by by Nottingham Police. An Army spokesperson said: "The safety and wellbeing of our personnel is our top priority. "We are aware of an online threat, which is being investigated by the civilian police. "Personnel are always advised to remain vigilant and report anything suspicious to the Royal Military Police." Lee Rigby was beheaded outside a Royal Artillery barracks in London twelve years ago. His death in Woolwich, South East London, sent shock waves across the nation. The 25-year-old was a drummer in the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. He was returning to Woolwich barracks after working at the Tower of London when he was spotted by his killers in Wellington Street at around 2.20pm. Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale had circled the barracks in a blue Vauxhall Tigra for an hour hunting for a victim. As Lee crossed the road, the pair spotted his Help 4 Heroes hoodie and mowed him down in the car. Trial date set for three men charged over fires at Keir Starmer properties
A trial date has been set for three men charged in connection with arson attacks on two properties and a car linked to Sir Keir Starmer. Ukrainian national Roman Lavrynovych, 21, and Romanian national Stanislav Carpiuc, 26, appeared together at the Old Bailey on Friday. Ukrainian national Petro Pochynok, 34, refused to attend the hearing. Two of the fires took place in Kentish Town, north London – one in the early hours of May 12 at the home where Sir Keir lived before he became Prime Minister and moved into Downing Street. The other fire was on May 11 at the front door of a house converted into flats in Islington. Lavrynovych, of Lewisham, south-east London, has been charged with three counts of arson with intent to endanger life on May 8, May 11 and May 12. Carpiuc, from Romford, east London, and Pochynok, of Islington, north London, are each accused of one count of conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life between April 17 and May 13. Lavrynovych and Carpiuc appeared at the hearing via videolink from HMP Belmarsh, and spoke only to confirm their identities and dates of birth via an interpreter. Ms Justice Cheema Grubb told the court that Pochynok had refused to leave his cell for the preliminary hearing. All three defendants were remanded in custody to next appear for a plea and trial preparation hearing at the same court on October 17. A provisional trial date was set for April 27 next year in front of a High Court judge. A fourth person, a 48-year-old man, was arrested by police at Stansted Airport on Monday on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life in connection with the incidents. Glasgow sex attacker raped woman he met on Tinder dating app
Rian Hood put the victim through a horror ordeal during a campaign of abuse at his hands. The 34-year-old ex-clothes shop supervisor denied being physically or sexually violent - even claiming in a bizarre video clip that the woman had instead hurt him. Hood was convicted of rape and engaging in a course of abusive behaviour following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow. After the verdicts, jurors learned he is already serving a seven-and-a-half-year jail term imposed in 2022 for preying on four other women. He is expected to learn his fate for this latest crime when he returns to the dock later this month. Hood, formerly of the city's Knightswood, told jurors how he was initially in contact with the woman via Tinder. He stated he had never used the dating app before as "you hear all these horror stories". He had been aware at the time of allegations made by one of the victims in the later 2022 trial. Hood claimed he told the woman in this latest case about the then accusations. He said there was "not much reaction" from her. Hood went on to move in with the woman and her mother at their home in the west of the city during one of the Covid lockdowns in 2020. He said: "It was a bit intense, but we managed it well." Hood insisted there was "seldom" any sexual contact between him and the victim while there. The woman, however, told how he stood on her face and then forced himself upon her during one attack. The abuse also took place at other flats in the north of Glasgow. His lawyer Frances Connor put to him at one stage: "Any truth that you wanted cocaine so you could have sex for hours and hours?" He refuted this, insisting the drug would have had the "opposite effect" on him. Miss Connor also asked if anything had occurred without the woman's consent. Hood again denied this. The lawyer went on: "Anything ever happened when she was asleep?" He then claimed: "No, I would never have woken her up as she was a grouch if you did." The attacker was also physically abusive, which had included a claim he had hurled Chinese spring rolls at her. He instead alleged the woman had previously "erupted" at him after confronting him about cheating on her. Jurors were shown a mobile phone clip recorded by the woman where a drunk and topless Hood claimed he could not walk as she had "broke" his toe by allegedly throwing a towel at him. Lord Colbeck adjourned sentencing for reports. In the previous trial, Hood had been convicted of 10 charges of similar abuse against four women between 2010 and 2020. His lawyer said at the time how his life had been "somewhat blighted by a gambling addiction" which had affected his relationships. He first faced allegations involving the latest victim in 2023 while serving the seven and a half year sentence.
