Pro-Palestinian Activists Charged with Damaging Planes at UK Air Base are Held in Custody
The charges come after the group Palestine Action said two of its members entered RAF Brize Norton on June 20 and used electric scooters to approach two Voyager jets used for air-to-air refueling. The protesters used repurposed fire extinguishers to spray paint into the planes' jet engines and caused further damage with crowbars, according to the group, which released video footage of the incident, The AP news reported.
The four, all between the ages of 22 and 35, are charged with conspiracy to commit criminal damage and conspiracy to enter a prohibited place for purposes prejudicial to the interests of the UK, counterterror police said in a statement. The Crown Prosecution Service will argue that the offenses have a 'terrorist connection,' police said.
The group did not enter pleas in Westminster Magistrates' Court. They were scheduled to appear July 18 at the Central Criminal Court.
Palestine Action has claimed responsibility for a series of incidents targeting Israeli defense contractors in the UK and other sites linked to the war in Gaza.
Following the incident at RAF Brize Norton, the government introduced legislation to ban Palestine Action as a terrorist organization. The measure, being debated in Parliament, would make it a criminal offense to belong to or support the group, with a maximum of 14 years in prison.
Palestine Action said its protests are designed to end international support for Israel's war in Gaza.
Planes from Brize Norton, 70 miles (112 kilometers) northwest of London, regularly fly to RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, Britain's main air base for operations in the Middle East.

About 100 countries are likely to see a reciprocal tariff rate of 10%, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Thursday, adding that he expects "a flurry" of trade deals announced before a July 9 deadline that could see tariff rates increase sharply. "We'll see how the President wants to treat those who are negotiating, whether he's happy that they're negotiating in good faith," Bessent told Bloomberg Television. "I think that we're going to see about 100 countries who just get the minimum 10% reciprocal tariff and we'll go from there. So I think we're going to see a lot of action over the coming days," Bessent said. If 10% tariffs were given to 100 countries, that would be fewer than originally envisioned by the Trump administration. Its original reciprocal tariff list showed 123 jurisdictions that were given a 10% tariff rate - mostly small countries, along with some territories like Australia's uninhabited Heard and McDonald Islands. Trump in April temporarily reduced the tariff rate for most countries to 10% to allow time for negotiations. Many countries with an initial 10% duty rate have not had any negotiations with the Trump administration, with the exception of Britain, which reached a deal in May to keep a 10% rate and won preferential treatment for some sectors including autos and aircraft engines. Major trading partners now involved in negotiations with the US could see much higher tariff rates, including 20% for the European Union, 26% for India and 24% for Japan. Other countries that have not engaged in trade talks with the Trump administration face even higher reciprocal tariffs, including 50% for Lesotho, 47% for Madagascar and 36% for Thailand. Trump on Wednesday announced an agreement with Vietnam that he said cuts US tariffs on many Vietnamese goods to 20% from his previously threatened 46%, with many US products claimed to be allowed to enter Vietnam duty free.

Israel, GHF Use Starvation to Commit Genocide in Gaza: Amnesty
Amnesty International has accused Israel and its aid distribution system, run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), of using starvation tactics against Palestinians as part of the Israeli ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip. Weapon of War In a report issued on Thursday, the UK-based human rights group said that it gathered evidence that shows how 'Israel has continued to use starvation of civilians as a weapon of war against Palestinians in the occupied Gaza Strip.' It added that evidence also demonstrates how Israel has continued to 'deliberately impose conditions of life calculated to bring about their (Palestinians) physical destruction as part of its ongoing genocide,' since the introduction of 'its militarized aid distribution system' in Gaza a month ago. Unabated Genocide In the light of this, the Secretary General of Amnesty International, Agnès Callamard, said: 'While the eyes of the world were diverted to the recent hostilities between Israel and Iran, Israel's genocide has continued unabated in Gaza.' This has included 'through the infliction of conditions of life that have created a deadly mix of hunger and disease pushing the population past breaking point,' she added. 'This must end now. Israel must lift all restrictions and allow unfettered, safe, and dignified access to humanitarian aid throughout Gaza immediately,' Callamard urged. Israeli Denunciation Meanwhile, Israel rejected the Amnesty report, accusing the organization of siding with Hamas. In a statement on X, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said: 'Amnesty International has joined forces with Hamas and fully adopted all of its propaganda lies.'
