Vandalised Paddington bear statue to return to Newbury
A Paddington statue that was ripped from a bench by two RAF engineers is to be reinstalled.The homage to the famous bear has been repaired and repainted and will be unveiled during a ceremony in Newbury, Berkshire, on Wednesday.Part of the statue was removed and taken in the early hours of 2 March by Daniel Heath and William Lawrence.The pair, both 22 and based at RAF Odiham in Hampshire, admitted criminal damage and were ordered to carry out unpaid work as well as pay £2,725 to cover the cost of repairs.
The statue was originally unveiled in the hometown of Paddington creator Michael Bond in October 2024.It was one of dozens put up across the UK as part of the Paddington Visits trail to celebrate the film, Paddington in Peru.The repaired bear will be unveiled by Ian Batho and Ashley Morris from Newbury Business Improvement District (BID).Ben Beardmore-Gray, marketing manager at Newbury BID, said: "We have received so many lovely messages from parents who wanted to share how much their children have been missing Paddington..."...we are delighted to announce that Paddington is finally ready for his much-anticipated return to Newbury."The reinstallation offers a unique opportunity for us to provide a special moment that parents can share with their children, so we'd like to invite any families along on the day to join us welcoming Paddington home."
As part of the unveiling, children are being encouraged to write a letter welcoming Paddington back to Newbury.They can be delivered to a special postbox next to his bench between 10:00 and 14:00 BST on Wednesday. The unveiling ceremony will begin on Northbrook Street at 11:30.

Lady Louise Windsor, daughter of Prince Edward and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, was also notably missing from this year's Trooping the Colour, despite her parents securing a spot on the balcony, reports the Mirror. Although Lady Louise doesn't attend all Royal engagements with her parents, many had anticipated her presence at this year's event, given she was invited to last year's celebrations. Although she is not a working Royal and is currently undertaking her studies at St Andrew's University in Scotland, she doesn't often participate in Royal events. Her most recent appearance with the family was during the annual Christmas Day walkabout in Sandringham last year. Traditionally, the late Queen Elizabeth would invite the extended Royal family to join on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the RAF flypast. However, the format of this gathering shifted significantly with the Trooping the Colour ceremony in 2022, which also marked the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. For the first time, the Queen chose to extend the balcony invitation exclusively to working members of the Royal family, subsequently excluding Harry, Meghan, and Prince Andrew from the festivities. Buckingham Palace, commenting on the monarch's decision to limit attendees to those engaged in official public duties, indicated it was made "after careful consideration". Yet there was an exception amongst the non-working royals: Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence was granted balcony access. Sir Tim, Princess Anne's husband, though he holds no Royal duties himself, is a constant presence and support to the Princess Royal during her myriad of Royal engagements. The palace emphasized that the Queen was content to have him on the balcony as he is a regular "frequent attendee and support for the Princess Royal on official engagements".

As the royal family took to the balcony of Buckingham Palace for the RAF flypast during today's Trooping the Colour, Kate had a simple but firm instruction for her youngest son, according to a lip reader As the royal family made their highly-anticipated appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony during today's Trooping the Colour, Princess Kate seemingly had a simple but firm command for Prince Louis. The young royal was on his best behaviour during the King's birthday celebrations, despite many hoping that his signature cheeky antics would once again be on display. Although Louis was mostly kept in check by his siblings George and Charlotte, Princess Kate did have to issue one simple instruction, according to lip reader Jeremy Freeman. As the royals took their pride of place before they headed back inside Buckingham Palace after the Red Arrows flypast, the lip reader claims that Kate had to instruct Louis to call to attention for the national anthem. Freeman exclusively told The Mirror that the young royal was looking restless as the festivities drew to a close, prompting Kate to say to her children: "National anthem. Louis, stand." Louis then straightened his posture and focused for the signing of the national anthem. Elsewhere on the balcony, King Charles and Prince William apprently remarked on what a spectacular day it had been, praising the military parade and the Red Arrows stunning aerial show. According to Freeman, William turned to his father at the conclusion of the RAF flypast and said: "Oh my word, what a day," to which Charles replied: 'Great theatre.' During another wholesome moment on the balcony, the three generations had a candid chat about the aircraft featured during the flypast. Freeman said that while William was having a conversation with Kate, King Charles interrupted to say: 'What is that?' as he pointed to an aircraft flying over the balcony. William responded to his father, further asking: "Errr is that Poseidon?" Prince George then stepped in to the conversation, confirming: "It's a Poseidon, yeah.' It comes as upon the conclusion of the King's birthday festivities, the royal family shared a series of videos showcasing the highlights of the day. In a short video posted by William and Kate, William is seen leaving the Palace in his military garb and mounting his horse for the procession, while Kate, George, Charlotte and Louis climbed into the carriage to make their way to the Mall. King Charles and Queen Camilla also posted a compilation video, which was shared on the official Royal Family social media accounts, showing the royals piling into their carriages for the procession, the impressive Red Arrows flypast, and King Charles even feeding a carrot to one of the horses pulling the carriage. In the caption of the video, the King and Queen thanked the military personnel who made the day "truly triumphant". This year marks the third Trooping the Colour parade of Charles' reign. The colour – regimental flag – being trooped this year is the King's Colour of Number 7 Company Coldstream Guards, also known as the sovereign's bodyguard and which is celebrating its 375th anniversary this year.
