Bruins tab former player Marco Sturm as new head coach
June 5 - The Boston Bruins hired Marco Sturm as their new head coach Thursday, filling the final vacant position in the NHL.
Sturm, 46, will be a head coach for the first time in the league.
The Bruins punched their ticket to the playoffs in eight consecutive seasons before limping to an Atlantic Division-worst 33-39-10 record in 2024-25. Boston replaced head coach Jim Montgomery after 20 games on Nov. 19, with interim head coach Joe Sacco finishing the season with a 25-30-7 mark.
Sturm said he welcomes the opportunity to preside over a team he represented from 2005-10.
"I'm incredibly honored to be named head coach of the Boston Bruins," Sturm said. "I want to thank Charlie Jacobs and the Jacobs family, (Bruins president) Cam Neely, and (general manager) Don Sweeney for trusting me with this opportunity. Boston has always held a special place in my heart, and I know how much this team means to the city and to our fans. I've felt that passion as a player, and I can't wait to be behind the bench and feel it again. I'm excited to get to work and do everything I can to help this team succeed."
Sweeney credited Sturm's attention to defensive hockey as one of the reasons for his hiring.
"Throughout this process, our goal was to identify a coach who could uphold our strong defensive foundation while helping us evolve offensively," Sweeney said. "We were also looking for a communicator and leader -- someone who connects with players, develops young talent, and earns the respect of the room."
Sturm has coached Ontario of the American Hockey League for the past three seasons, guiding the Reign to the playoffs in all three campaigns.
Sturm totaled 487 points (242 goals, 245 assists) in 938 career games with the San Jose Sharks, Bruins, Los Angeles Kings, Washington Capitals, Vancouver Canucks and Florida Panthers. He was traded from the Sharks to the Bruins as part of the Joe Thornton deal on Nov. 30, 2005.
Sturm is Germany's all-time leader in NHL games played.

WTI-Brent spread at narrowest in almost two years as US prices rise
HOUSTON, June 6 (Reuters) - The spread between U.S. West Texas Intermediate and Brent crude futures narrowed to its tightest level since September 2023 on Friday as U.S. prices rose on a sliding rig count and Canadian wildfires that cut supplies, analysts and traders said. U.S. futures ended the week 4.9% higher, while Brent futures rose 2.75%, as OPEC+ output increases put a cap on gains. A narrower spread indicates a closed arbitrage window for traders and weaker shipping economics to Europe and Asia. The tighter spread can act as an early indicator that U.S. crude exports will likely fall in the next few weeks, assuming the premium for Brent crude remains weak. The inclusion of WTI-Midland crude in the dated Brent index has meant that the spread between the two is increasingly correlated to freight rates, as the price of Dated Brent is set by WTI Midland on many trading days. The spread between the two crude benchmarks narrowed to as little as $2.78 a barrel during the session on Friday. A discount of $4 per barrel is typically considered the level that encourages U.S. exports to Europe, as traders see an open arbitrage route. The spread has remained narrower than $4 a barrel since May 1, according to data from LSEG, partly due to concerns around U.S. production, helping keep more barrels onshore, according to Phil Flynn, senior analyst with Price Futures Group. "With Canadian wildfire season underway, further disruption could push the WTI/Brent spread below $3 this summer," said analysts at Sparta Commodities. "When you look at the WTI/Brent spread, you can see the concerns a little bit around leveling off U.S. production and concerns about export barrels tightening up," said Price Futures Group's Flynn.

Fever coach Stephanie White could miss game vs. Sky
June 6 - Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White missed practice for personal reasons on Friday and her status for Saturday's road game against the Chicago Sky is unclear. White didn't travel with the team on Friday. It's feasible she could travel to Chicago on her own on Saturday. Assistant coach Austin Kelly will serve as head coach Saturday if White misses the game. It is the first season of White's second stint as Indiana's head coach. She led the Fever from 2015-16 and returned after spending the past two seasons coaching the Connecticut Sun.
