Lionel Messi, Inter Miami oust LAFC with chaotic 3-goal comeback in CONCACAF Champions Cup

Yahoo10-04-2025

Lionel Messi and Inter Miami stormed back from two goals down to top LAFC in a chaotic CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinal on Wednesday.
In a reprise of the most recent World Cup final, Messi beat LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris from the penalty spot to complete a triumphant comeback, and claim a spot in the semifinals of North and Central America's premier club competition.
An hour earlier, Messi had kick-started the comeback with a wonderful goal. That brought Inter Miami level in Wednesday's second leg, but they were still behind on aggregate after last week's first leg; and behind on away goals, after LAFC's Aaron Long scored in the 9th minute of Wednesday's game.
So, they needed three goals. Messi got the first. A bizarre second goal slipped past Lloris in the 61st minute.
The third seemed elusive, until LAFC inexplicably failed to clear an uncontested falling ball in its penalty box.
Replays showed that it struck an LAFC arm. After a VAR review, referee César Ramos pointed to the spot. Messi stepped up, froze Lloris, and dragged Miami to the semis, where they'll face either the Vancouver Whitecaps or Liga MX club Pumas.
This story will be updated. A full blow-by-blow recap is below.
What looked like the end for Inter Miami turned into a furious response. Down 2-0 on aggregate after Long's early goal, Miami roared back with three unanswered — capped by Messi's composed penalty after a handball inside the box.
From desperation to dominance in the space of 60 minutes. Miami advances. Adios, Los Angeles.

Now things get really interesting with LAFC still leading on the away goal tiebreaker. But Miami's attack has been relentless and LAFC is breaking down.
The goal was initially credited to Redondo, but after a closer look he didn't get a piece of it.
Five minutes in, no goals yet. Inter Miami on the front foot, though
Fun half. Sloppy at times, frantic at times.
Plenty of quality, also plenty of missed chances and mistakes.
As a reminder: LAFC leads 2-1 on aggregate, and has won the away goals tiebreaker. So, Miami is essentially behind by 1.5 goals; Messi and co. need at least two in the second half.
... on himself?!?
Suarez howled at the referee after a duel in the box with Marlon. He seemed to claiming the ball had hit Marlon's hand.
It had not. In fact, Suarez had tapped it with his own hand.
Quick VAR review, nothing
Sloppy giveaways. Poor structure.
Suarez and Messi both nearly capitalized, testing Hugo Lloris. But LAFC survived.
Still 1-1 on the night
In minute 34, LAFC seemed comfortable.
Now, in Minute 38, Inter Miami is all over the visitors. Chests are puffed. Runs are incisive. Tackles are aggressive.
It was only one goal, and LAFC still has a commanding lead, but the vibes have completely flipped.

A very confusion situation, in a nutshell:
- LAFC fouled Messi. The ref showed a yellow card to Ryan Hollingshead. Messi set up a free kick in a dangerous position
- As LAFC was setting up its wall, Messi caught everybody off guard, took the free kick, and scored
- The ref initially gave the goal, but LAFC protested furiously, and rightly so — because if a ref gives a yellow card for a foul, he has to give the attacking team clearance to restart play by blowing his whistle. He hadn't yet done that.
- Eventually, possibly after getting some guidance from an assistant, he disallowed the goal.
Maxi Falcón stumbled, inexplicably, and Denis Bouanga was able to waltz into the box untouched.
But, also inexplicably, he passed of a free shot from 12 yards out on his right foot, and LAFC couldn't get a clean shot off. (The deflected effort was saved by Ustari.)
Inter Miami has had plenty of possession, but LAFC has had the better chances here.

10 cricketers who retired early: From Nicholas Pooran to Ayesha Naseem and more

Nicholas Pooran's recent retirement from international cricket at just 29 years old has reignited discussions about players who walked away from the sport in their prime. While the reasons range from mental health and injuries to faith and career setbacks, each story reflects a unique journey. Here are 10 cricketers who stunned fans with early exits: 1. Nicholas Pooran (West Indies) At 29, Pooran announced his international retirement despite being West Indies' most-capped T20I player and leading run-scorer. He cited personal reflection and gratitude for the journey, with no specific reason but hints of shifting priorities. 2. Ayesha Naseem (Pakistan) The promising 18-year-old batter retired suddenly to lead a more devout Islamic life. Debuting in 2020, she had already made a mark in both T20Is and ODIs, and her departure leaves a gap in Pakistan's future plans. 3. Sarah Taylor (England) England's legendary wicketkeeper retired at 30, citing long-term anxiety issues. Taylor won multiple ICC titles and is remembered as one of the finest gloveswomen in women's cricket. 4. Unmukt Chand (India) India's U-19 World Cup-winning captain from 2012 retired at 28 after struggling to break through in senior-level cricket. He later moved to the U.S. to pursue cricketing opportunities. 5. Munaf Patel (India) The fast bowler, instrumental in India's 2011 World Cup win, quietly retired at 28 after being dropped from the national side. Persistent injuries and lack of selection led to his decision. 6. Pragyan Ojha (India) Ojha was only 27 when sidelined from the Indian Test squad. Despite 113 wickets in 24 Tests, competition from Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja curtailed his career. 7. AB de Villiers (South Africa) Known for redefining modern batting, de Villiers shocked the world by retiring at 34 while still dominating world cricket. He cited fatigue and the pressure of international cricket. 9. Aaqib Javed (Pakistan) A key figure in Pakistan's 1992 World Cup-winning squad, Javed retired at 26 amid match-fixing controversies. His early debut at 16 and swift exit make his story notable. 10. Craig Kieswetter (England) Kieswetter's career ended at 25 due to an eye injury. He was instrumental in England's 2010 T20 World Cup win and was seen as a long-term wicketkeeper option. 11. James Taylor (England) Taylor's career was cut short at 26 due to a serious heart condition. A consistent performer in ODIs, he averaged 42 and was seen as a key future player. These stories underline how unpredictable sporting careers can be, shaped not just by form and stats but personal battles, faith, and fate.

Pittsburgh Pirates hammer Miami Marlins in Eury Perez's long-awaited return

Adam Frazier and Andrew McCutchen each had three hits and an RBI, and Bryan Reynolds had two hits including a bases-clearing triple to help the host Pittsburgh Pirates top the Miami Marlins 10-3 on Monday night. The Pirates extended their season-high winning streak to four in a row after a weather delay of 41 minutes prior to first pitch. Their offensive output matched a season high as they scored 10 runs in a game for the third time this season. Every starter in Pittsburgh's lineup had at least one hit as the Pirates had 15 overall, although only four were extra-base hits and none were home runs. Reynolds' big hit highlighted a four-run third inning and came off returning Marlins' starter Eury Perez (0-1), who made his first start since Sept. 20, 2023, after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2024. Miami lost for the seventh time in its past eight games and is 3-10 over its past 13. Perez threw only 70 pitches after allowing three of the four hits he surrendered in the game during that inning. He finished with five strikeouts and two walks. The Pirates put up another four-run inning in the sixth when they batted around on reliever Janson Junk to take an 8-2 lead. Junk pitched four innings in relief and gave up five runs on nine hits and one walk. Pirates catcher Brett Sullivan, who was recalled from the minors on Saturday after Endy Rodriguez was placed on the injured list, drove in a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly and another in the seventh on an RBI single. Otto Lopez had the game's only home run when he hit his sixth of the season in the top of the second off Pirates rookie starter Mike Burrows to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead. Burrows pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out six, matching his career high set in his previous start. Chase Shugart recorded the final two outs of the fifth inning after Heriberto Hernandez scored the Marlins' second run on a sacrifice fly by Jesus Sanchez. Hernandez led off the inning with a double and led Miami with two hits. Caleb Ferguson (2-0) pitched two perfect innings and struck out two after taking over to start the sixth. To make room for Perez on the roster, the Marlins optioned right-hander Connor Gillispie to Triple-A Jacksonville. Miami also placed right-handed starter Ryan Weathers on the 60-day injured list with a left lat strain.
