DeSantis picks state Sen Jay Collins to be Floridas lieutenant governor
If Collins, an Army combat veteran and nonprofit executive, decides to launch a bid to succeed DeSantis, the move could tee up another proxy fight between the popular GOP governor and President Donald Trump, who has already endorsed Republican Congressman Byron Donalds for the job.
The seat has been vacant since February, when then-lieutenant governor Jeanette Nuñez was appointed to lead one of the state's public universities. In Florida, the lieutenant governor position is largely ceremonial with few official responsibilities, apart from taking over if the governor cannot serve.
Collins was first elected to Florida's Republican-dominated state Senate in 2022 and has been seen as one of DeSantis' key allies in the Legislature. In recent months, GOP legislators loyal to the president have increasingly sparred with the governor, who challenged Trump for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
Born in Montana, Collins has talked openly about personal challenges he has overcome, including experiencing homelessness while in high school. He went on to join the Army Special Forces and ultimately lost a leg, but continued to serve five more years as a Green Beret post-amputation, according to a campaign biography.
The appointment is seen as a way for DeSantis to elevate a potential successor in 2026, though the governor has repeatedly talked up his wife, Casey DeSantis, for the job, while taking shots at Trump's pick. (AP) RD RD RD

Don't burden consumers with tariff hike, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu directs power utilities in Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has advised the power utilities not to pass the burden of power tariffs on to the consumers, and instead tap the potential of alternative non-tariff revenue streams, like possibly leasing the AP-Transco's fiber optic network to generate a revenue of nearly ₹7,000 crore. Also, Mr. Naidu calls for a reduction in power purchase from the open market, and bringing down the power Transmission & Distribution (T&D) losses significantly from the present 9%. Addressing a review meeting at his camp office on Wednesday, Mr. Naidu said the T&D losses could be minimised by doing effective feeder management, and since the power consumption was expected to increase by 8.90% in the next two to three years, efforts to generate more Renewable Energy (RE) should be intensified. Green energy generation plans should be made to meet the growing energy requirements, he added. He exhorted the officials to transform Andhra Pradesh into a Green Energy Hub by drawing up appropriate short, medium, and long-term strategies in line with the changing global dynamics. He emphasized the need to reduce the RE production costs, and observed that effective auditing would help in improving power generation, supply, and distribution management. The Chief Minister told the officials to adjust the power generation through constant monitoring of the weather by utilising sensors, drones, and other modern tools. Officials informed Mr. Naidu that consumption had reached 270 Million Units (MU) in March–April this year, and projected that the demand could rise to 12,700 MW between September 2025 and March 2026. Responding, the Chief Minister said efforts should be made to ramp up production and suggested measures by power swapping to reduce purchases. Further, Mr. Naidu said the prevailing cost of thermal power was ₹5 to ₹6 per unit, while wind power costs only ₹4.60 per unit. Officials told Mr. Naidu that RE projects worth ₹3.19 lakh crore had been grounded since June 2024. Daimler, Volvo, other truckmakers sue California to block emissions rules
Four major truckmakers, including Daimler and Volvo, sued California to block the state from enforcing strict emissions standards that U.S. President Donald Trump declared void in June. Daimler, Volvo, Paccar and International Motors , formerly Navistar, said they have been "caught in the crossfire" after Trump reversed waivers issued during the Biden administration that let California set its own standards. In a complaint filed on Monday, the truckmakers said Trump's rescinding U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approval of California's plan to boost zero-emission heavy-duty truck sales and reduce nitrogen oxide emissions preempted the state's enforcement. They said this included enforcing the Clean Truck Partnership , a 2023 program giving the truckmaking industry flexibility to meet emissions requirements while advancing California's goal of lowering emissions. The truckmakers said the regulatory uncertainty has caused irreparable harm because they cannot plan production in advance without knowing which vehicles they will be permitted to sell. Monday's complaint names the California Air Resources Board and Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom as defendants, and was filed in the federal court in Sacramento, the state's capital. Newsom's office and the board did not respond on Tuesday to requests for comment. On Tuesday evening, the Federal Trade Commission ended an antitrust probe into the Clean Truck Partnership, and said Daimler, Volvo, Paccar and International Motors agreed to avoid future anticompetitive agreements with state regulators. "CARB's regulatory overreach posed a major threat to American trucking," Taylor Hoogendoorn, deputy director of the FTC bureau of competition, said in a statement. Trump, a Republican, is trying to curb California's power under the federal Clean Air Act to set tighter pollution limits than federal law requires, and Newsom's ability to promote electric vehicles as the governor fights climate change. California has received more than 100 waivers under the Clean Air Act since 1970.
