Abhijit Banerjee joins Telangana Rising Advisory Board for development
Nobel laureate economist Prof Abhijit Banerjee on Saturday met Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy here and discussed several innovative ideas in urban development, economic growth, augmenting public revenues, fiscal discipline, large-scale skilling and jobs creation.
The Nobel laureate also accepted the invitation from the chief minister to join the illustrious and globally renowned list of advisors of the 'Telangana Rising' vision board, an official release said.
The Telangana government's vision of growth, investments, job creation, building great infrastructure and welfare for all sections is described as 'Telangana Rising'.
While discussing mass-scale job creation, Banerjee spoke of the need to create unique short-term courses in traditional skills with modern design and appeal, marketing, use of social media technology to help traditional artisans turn into modern entrepreneurs, it said.
He also suggested to the CM to include crafts, arts and creativity as a significant part of the Bharat Future City'.
Banerjee also expressed appreciation for the pioneering efforts of CM Reddy in enrollment of transgenders into police and municipal departments, envisioning Hyderabad's core urban area within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) as a pure-services zone, and creation of skills and a sports university.
The CM elaborated the various empowerment programmes for women Self-Help Groups, youth and farmers.
Industries and IT Minister D Sridhar Babu, Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao and other officials participated in the discussion, the release added.

Dhaka [Bangladesh], June 1 (ANI): Formal charges were filed on Sunday against the former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for crimes against humanity committed during the student-led uprising in the country in July-August 2024. Incidentally, the trial is being conducted in Sheikh Hasina's absence and the Bangladesh state-owned broadcaster Bangladeshi TV (BTV) will air the proceedings live. Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam filed formal charges at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in Dhaka. Ironically, the tribunal was formed by Hasina to try crimes committed during Bangladesh's Liberation War in 1971. The prosecution of the Bangladeshi International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has pressed formal charges against Hasina, who had fled the country last year, in a case filed over their alleged crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising. As per the charges Hasina was the main mastermind behind the inhumane acts such as crimes against humanity, murders, and burning of bodies across the country during the movement to overthrow the government in 2024. These crimes were organized on her orders. She is the main instigator of the crimes, as per the charges. Arrest warrants have also been issued against other members of Hasina's Awami League. Former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun were named co-accused in the complaint submitted by Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam to the ICT. Hasina has defied an arrest warrant and extradition orders from Dhaka to face trial in person. She has rejected the charges as politically motivated. A fact-finding committee of the United Nations Human Rights High Commission estimates that around 1,400 people were killed during anti-Sheikh Hasina protests in 2024. The Awami League has denied the allegations against Sheikh Hasina, saying that many of the protesters, police, and Awami League leaders and party activists were killed by the attacks of protesters. Meanwhile, the Appellate Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court on Sunday ordered the Election Commission to revoke Jamaat-e-Islami's registration as a political party. Indian aviation market is emerging stronger with growth in connectivity, networks and airport infrastructure, and the country also has the potential for producing sustainable aviation fuel, global airlines' grouping IATA said on Sunday. Amitabh Khosla, Country Director India, Nepal & Bhutan at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on Sunday said the Indian aviation market is witnessing a significant improvement on the back of emergence of stronger airlines within the country, the growth of connectivity and networks. "We are also seeing significant increase in the airport infrastructure, so it gives a good foundation, a base on which India will build further," he said. At a briefing in the national capital on the sidelines of the World Air Transport Summit (WATS) being organised by IATA, Khosla also said India is one of the largest producers of ethanol. India has the potential to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). "We understand from our discussions with some of the oil companies in the country that we are looking at India SAF production coming about in 2026," he said. IATA represents about 350 airlines comprising over 80 per cent of the global air traffic. Around 1,700 participants are expected to attend WATS and the grouping will also be holding its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in India for the first time after 42 years. According to IATA, India's aviation industry directly employs 3,69,700 people and generates USD 5.6 billion of GDP. When indirect, induced and tourism impacts are included, the totals rise to 7.7 million jobs and USD 53.6 billion of GDP (1.5 per cent). Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina charged with crimes against humanity
Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been charged in the country's International Crimes Tribunal with crimes against humanity allegedly committed during the protests against her government in July and August, the Dhaka Tribune reported on Sunday. Hasina has been charged with having instigated mass killings during protests against her Awami League government. Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam, who filed the charges before the tribunal, said that the violence against the protestors at the time was a 'coordinated, widespread and systematic attack', Al-Jazeera reported. 'The accused unleashed all law enforcement agencies and her armed party members to crush the uprising,' the prosecutor said. On February 12, a United Nations report on the violence said that the Hasina government, the country's security and intelligence services and 'violent elements' associated with the Awami League party 'systematically engaged in a range of serious human rights violations' during the agitation in July and August. Of the 1,400 killed and thousands injured between July 1 and August 15, the vast majority were shot by Bangladesh's security forces, the report said. Of these, 12% to 13% killed were children. Hasina was ousted from power and fled to India on August 5 amid widespread student-led protests against her Awami League government. She had been the prime minister of Bangladesh for 16 years. Nobel laureate economist Muhammad Yunus took over as the head of Bangladesh's interim government on August 8. Since then, a total of 51 cases have been filed against Hasina, including 42 for murder. Two warrants for her arrest have also been issued. On May 10, Bangladesh banned all activities of the Awami League, including its online platforms, under the country's anti-terrorism act. Hasina has denied the allegations against her and claimed that she is being politically persecuted. In December, the interim government said that it had sent a note verbale, or an unsigned diplomatic communique, to India formally seeking Hasina's extradition. India confirmed receiving the note verbale from the Bangladesh High Commission.
