With dozens of competitive teams, a $100,000 purse, and enough smoked meat to satisfy an army, the revived National BBQ Festival is aiming to become Long Island's newest summertime tradition.
If you've never heard of it, you're not alone. But in barbecue circles, this festival is legendary. From 2002 to 2011, it ran in Douglas and Waycross, Georgia, where it drew tens of thousands and quickly outgrew its space. Fourteen years later, it's back—new location, new format, same commitment to smoke, fire, and fierce competition.

From Small-Town Georgia to Suburban New York
The move from Georgia to Nassau County is a big shift—but a strategic one. Long Island's food scene has grown more ambitious over the past decade. There's space, proximity to the city, and a crowd that loves great food.
Eisenhower Park, with over 900 acres of public space, offers a rare combo: open land, built-in infrastructure, and easy access for millions.
At the heart of the festival is the competition, where top BBQ teams from across the country will go head-to-head in categories like brisket, ribs, pork, chicken, and whole hog. Adding a local twist, the event will also feature a meatball cook-off and a Long Island Iced Tea competition—two uniquely Long Island favorites. And it's not just about flavor. Judges will be scoring entries based on timing, texture, technique, and presentation.

While the competition fires up the pitmasters, the real draw for attendees is the unlimited BBQ samples included with admission. Guests can feast their way through the Live Fire Experience, sampling signature dishes from top pitmasters across the country. Beyond the bites, the weekend also features craft beer and wine tastings, live fire cooking demos, chef appearances, and family-friendly programming. And the flavor doesn't stop at the grill—live music runs all weekend, including a Saturday night performance by West Coast rap legend Warren G, who'll also be competing with his own BBQ team.

Yes, there will be smoke. Yes, there will be rows of custom smokers. And yes, you'll leave smelling like brisket. But that's the point. Between demos, tastings, and live music, this is one of the most satisfying weekends of the year.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword might be a more forgiving kind of samurai epic
Capcom's Onimusha series has been on a long hiatus. Combining Resident Evil-style rendered backgrounds with more agile characters, adding in demons, magic and a feudal Japan setting, the series span multiple sequels — and consoles — til the fourth entry in 2006. Roughly two decades (and console eras) later, Capcom has returned to the series, even getting the definitive samurai actor, Tom Cruise Mifune Toshiro, to play the hero, the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. At Gamescom, the company is now demoing an early slice of Way of the Sword, which covers most (but not all) of the game shown at SGF 2025 just a few months ago. It's an interesting time to return to the samurai-meets-demonic-threat universe of Onimusha, following a sudden boom in games tapping into feudal Japan. Most recently, the latest Assassin's Creed was set there, while, Sony's upcoming Ghost of Yotei (not to mention its predecessor) both tap bushido and swordplay in historical Japan. While I played through the demo, I made a lot of mental comparisons to Sekiro – a game that's now several years old and still unbeaten by me. Onimusha draws together similar themes of demon forces run amok, but has a more forgiving approach. Gameplay centers around blocks and parries, plus weak and strong attacks, all while pulling in orbs dropped by dying enemies that act as the game's currency. (Health orbs are also dropped by certain foes.) Onimusha Way of the Sword hands-on (Capcom) The Oni gauntlet that absorbs these souls can also be used to see invisible demons and unlock areas that are spiritually blocked. It'll also act like a sort-of demonic movie projector, showing what happened during the demon invasion in the area. Early enemies were predictably sluggish demon swordsmen and archers, getting me back up to speed with how Onimusha fights play out. Even if it predictably looks lightyears ahead of its predecessors, Way of the Sword doesn't reinvent how you cut up these demon hordes. In comparison to other action games, guarding seems very forgiving. You can hold the guard button down, and it'll block basic projectiles and melee attacks from all directions I spent some time leaning into exhausting stamina gauges, timing parries for one-hit Issen critical attack and batting away arrows back where they came from. Don't get me wrong, it's satisfying and fun, but I'm itching to see how the series will build on what's pretty basic attack flow. Musashi had acccess to a dual-short sword special attack, Two Celestials, that barrages the enemy with attacks and tops up his health levels. This suggests more special attacks and magical flourishes should open up later in the game. The preview during SGF 2025 also showed ways to utilize the environment for defensive attacks, holding up wooden boards to block arrows, for instance, although that didn't trigger during my playthrough. Onimusha Way of the Sword hands-on (Capcom) The highlight of the demo was a confrontation with Musashi's rival, Ganryu Sasaki. He's great villain fodder — and has also been somehow gifted his own Oni gauntlet. The duel was the only time I felt under threat during the demo, and even then, I didn't die once. There's enough of a health meter to test yourself against Sasaki's lavish sword attacks and lunges. Once you wear down more powerful enemies, you can make a single, concentrated attack to either glean more orbs from them or hit for heavy-duty damage. The early taste of Way of the Sword is a fun, easy romp, so I'm curious to see how Capcom evolves the formula of Onimusha — and where the true challenges might lie. Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to be released in 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC.

Google Pixel 10 event live: Updates from the hardware launch today, including Gemini, Pixel Watch and more
Samsung may have kicked off the 2025 hardware launch season with an early Unpacked last month, but Google is ready to dominate. The Pixel maker is hosting its Made By Google event today in New York, and it's already begun disseminating some info about what's to come. In addition to already teasing its Pixel 10 line of phones, the company posted a video on X about some "special guests" that are likely to be at the event. The SNL-style clip showcased familiar names including Jimmy Fallon, Steph Curry, Lando Norris and the Jonas Brothers. Texas QB Arch Manning facing high expectations and ills of elite talent and family name
If you think you're already tired of all things Arch Manning, imagine actually being Arch Manning. Just do normal, man. Play football, go to class, hang out on Fifth Street. The next thing you know, grandpa has the next two years of your life mapped out, and he's using the Texas Monthly magazine bullhorn so the planet knows it. It's bad enough that Arch has to deal with expectations of (in this order) an unbeaten season, an SEC championship, a Heisman Trophy, a national title, and the first pick in the NFL draft — or bust. PATH TO PLAYOFF: Sign up for our college football newsletter It's bad enough that one uncle is an NFL Hall of Fame quarterback, and another uncle is on his way to Canton. And that's all Arch has to live up to. It's worse that grandpa, of all people – Archie Manning, the first true college football megastar of decades gone by and a fantastic NFL star who played on some truly lousy New Orleans Saints teams – joined Team Expectation and Speculation in July to declare Arch will spend two more years at Texas before leaving for the NFL. Book it. Only there's one teeny-weeny problem: Arch is only worried about the here and now. 'I don't know where he got that from,' Manning said Monday, in his first meeting with the media since last month's SEC media days. 'He texted me to apologize about that.' Let me be the first to apologize to Arch for all of this nonsense. For the hype and the hyperbole, for Las Vegas and the Heisman odds, for failure is not an option, for putting the horse before winning a road game as an SEC starting quarterback. You know, that used to be a big deal. To be fair to Manning, he doesn't want this circus. He said in July that he doesn't deserve any of it. He can't control what a talk radio host in Miami says anymore than a television bobblehead in Los Angeles. He knows Finebaum is chumming the waters, and the SEC Network is looking for the next soundbite, and everyone – I mean, everyone – is just waiting for him to fail. Because that's what we've become in this twisted wash machine of gotta have it, gotta get it. Build 'em up, tear 'em down. He just probably never expected grandpa to join the party. No one needs the season to begin quicker than Manning, whose first test out of the gate next week is on the road against defending national champion Ohio State. And that may as well be a welcome respite from this offseason of buffoonery. Let's not forget that Arch purposely avoided any connection to the past when, as the nation's No.1 quarterback recruit, he chose a different college path. Avoid the spotlight, embrace the normal. Didn't go to Ole Miss (where Archie and uncle Eli Manning played) or Tennessee (Peyton Manning), and didn't choose Alabama or Georgia and their recent history of college football domination. Manning chose the one school where he'd blend in like any other student on an urban campus, and where he could lift a program back to championship glory. Texas hasn't won a national title since Mack Brown's team shocked Southern California in 2005. That's 20 long years for the hardcore Burnt Orange, two excruciatingly painful decades of underachieving ugly. Texas has changed everything – coaches, athletic directors, presidents, conferences – in those 20 years, and nothing has worked. Now it has a genuine difference-maker at quarterback for the first time since Colt McCoy got the Longhorns back to the national title game in 2009, but was knocked out of the game on the first drive. That eventual loss to Alabama still haunts Brown, who swears Texas had the better team and the perfect game plan to beat the Tide. MONEY GRAB: With Michigan sanctions, NCAA sells what's left of soul Now here we are in 2025, and the entire college football world hangs on all things Arch. We can't get enough of it. Some because of tantalizing thoughts of what could be with all of that talent, and others just waiting for him to throw two picks in a loss to Ohio State. Because I told you so is such an attractive look. Here's a novel idea: just let the kid play. Forget about his bloated NIL deals, or his famous last name or that he has started all of two games in two seasons at Texas. If he goes out and beats Ohio State, don't start screaming about multiple Heismans or the first pick in the NFL draft. Stay in the moment and enjoy the ride. Even if Texas gets on a roll, and there's no one stopping the train. Even if Arch looks like all the best parts of Archie, Peyton and Eli. Even if Nick Saban admits at some point this season – during one of ESPN's many GameDay shows featuring Texas – that he'd have stayed at Alabama if he could've signed Arch.
