Japan and Malaysia ease through to Sudirman Cup quarterfinals
Japan went ahead through mixed doubles pair Yuichi Shimogami and Sayaka Hobara before Koki Watanabe and women's world No. 4 Akane Yamaguchi won their singles matches to open up an unassailable 3-0 lead.
Searching for their first title after finishing runners-up three times, Japan went on to complete their second straight 5-0 victory thanks to their dominant doubles pairings.
Malaysia, also eyeing a first Sudirman crown, went 4-0 up through their mixed doubles, singles and men's doubles wins before Australian duo Gronya Somerville and Angela Yu got the better of Go Pei Kee and Carmen Ting in the women's doubles.
In the evening session, former champions Indonesia take on India and Denmark face England in Group D.

Former Australian cricketer, captain and coach Bob Simpson dies at age 89
SYDNEY (AP) -- Bob Simpson, a former player, captain and coach and one of the most influential figures in Australian cricket, has died at the age of 89. Cricket Australia on Saturday confirmed the death of Simpson, who represented Australia in 62 tests and two one-day internationals between 1957 and 1978. Simpson scored 4,869 test runs, including 10 centuries and 27 half-centuries, and took 71 wickets, while captaining Australia in 39 tests. Simpson was just 16 when he made his first-class debut for New South Wales state against Victoria. He also coached Australia from 1986 to 1996 and under his firm and steady guidance, Australia won the 1987 World Cup, four Ashes campaigns and in 1995 the Frank Worrell Trophy, ending a 17-year drought against the West Indies. An opener, Simpson's ongoing partnership with Bill Lawry included a record 382-run opening stand against the West Indies in 1965. He was also one of the greatest slip-fielders, taking 110 catches. Cricket Australia said the Australian team will pay tribute to Simpson with a moment's silence before Saturday night's one-day international against South Africa at Cairns in northern Australia and will also wear black armbands. Simpson made his test debut against South Africa in Johannesburg in 1957, and his first century came in an Ashes test at Old Trafford in 1964, when Simpson went on to score 311. He is one of only seven Australians to make a triple-century. Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was among the first to pay tribute to Simpson. "Bob Simpson's extraordinary service to Australian cricket spanned generations. As a player, captain and then era-defining coach, he set the highest standards for himself and the champions he led," Albanese wrote on X. "He will be long remembered by the game he loved. May he rest in peace." Simpson was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2013. "As a brilliant opening batter, incredible slips fielder and handy spin bowler, Bob was a mainstay of a very strong Australian team in the 1960s, and he became a leader across the game as Australian and New South Wales captain and as a coach." Cricket Australia chairman Mike Baird said in a statement. "Bob's decision to come out of retirement to successfully lead the Australian team during the advent of World Series cricket in 1977 was a wonderful service to the game, and his coaching set the foundation for a golden era for Australian cricket."

2 Japanese soccer players admit to betting corruption in Australia
soccer Two Japanese soccer players, including an Australian A-League player, admitted at a Melbourne court hearing Wednesday to match-fixing and betting corruption charges. Riku Danzaki, 25, a former midfielder for Melbourne-based A-League club Western United, pleaded guilty to seven charges relating to a scheme to deliberately receive yellow cards during matches between April and May to manipulate betting outcomes, during the hearing at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court. His co-accused Yuta Hirayama, a 27-year-old student and friend of Danzaki who played for an amateur club in Melbourne, also pleaded guilty to seven betting-related charges for using information about Danzaki's plans to bet on the matches. Together the pair placed bets on Danzaki receiving yellow cards during three A-League games, earning winnings of almost AU$16,000 ($10,480), court documents showed. Danzaki's defense lawyer Lewis Winter told the court his client was "profoundly ashamed" and "genuinely remorseful" for his actions. The court's magistrate indicated he would not be considering jail time for the player, and a fine was suggested as the most appropriate penalty by Winter. The two men were arrested on May 30 and later released on bail. They are expected to be sentenced on Aug 22 when the matter returns to court. Danzaki joined Western United in Australian soccer's top division in 2023 after playing for Brisbane Roar in the league. He made his professional debut in 2019 for Consadole Sapporo, playing in the first division, before stints with clubs including J2 outfit JEF United Chiba and Scottish side Motherwell. Lions hooker Sheehan suspended for 4 matches over Lynagh incident
rugby union British and Irish Lions hooker Dan Sheehan has been suspended for four matches for flattening Wallabies playmaker Tom Lynagh in Saturday's third and final test, World Rugby announced on Monday. The 26-year-old Irishman -- who captained the side for part of the 22-12 defeat after Maro Itoje suffered a head injury -- had argued his action did not merit a citing nor was it foul play. However, an independent panel disagreed, imposing the ban, although he will miss only three games if he successfully completes a coaching intervention. "The sanction has been accepted by the player," read the judgement. "In determining foul play, the Committee found that Sheehan's actions were reckless. The Committee found that he made head contact with the Australian player, that his action amounted to a high degree of danger and that no mitigation applied." Sheehan charged into the breakdown during the first half of the clash in Sydney, appearing to elbow Lynagh in the head. It was missed by the referee and television match official (TMO), despite Lynagh leaving the field for a head injury assessment which he failed.
