Letters sent to 13,000 potential victims in Long Island sleep center spy camera case

CBS News12-06-2025
The Nassau County district attorney's office is looking to identify potential victims who may have been recorded without their knowledge inside a Long Island sleep center's bathrooms.
A court hearing was held Thursday in the case of Sanjai Syamaprasad. The 47-year-old was charged back in April after prosecutors say he secretly took videos of co-workers and patients, including young children, in bathrooms at the Northwell Sleep Disorders Center in Manhasset where he worked.
Now, an attorney representing people in three class action lawsuits says 13,000 letters have gone out to patients who may have been victimized.
"Anyone that was there between October of 2022 and April 2024 is a potential victim here," attorney Joel Rubenstein said. "Victims can send pictures of themselves to the DA's office."
Hidden camera recorded patients, co-workers in sleep center bathrooms, prosecutors say
Syamaprasad allegedly moved a spy camera that looked like a smoke detector around nine bathrooms at the center, placing the camera where it had views of showers and toilets.
According to prosecutors, hundreds of victims were recorded over a year and a half. The district attorney said they are reviewing thousands of images.
Prosecutors said in 2024, a co-worker caught Syamaprasad watching the videos at work. Northwell says it took immediate action to remove him and brought in law enforcement.
Syamaprasad has pleaded not guilty to charges including unlawful surveillance.
He is also under investigation for similar crimes at a Weill Cornell sleep center in Manhattan.

Maple Grove man, 25, charged in deadly shooting of 17-year-old girl

A man has been charged in the July 1 fatal Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, shooting of a 17-year-old girl. The 25-year-old Maple Grove man is charged with one count each of second-degree intentional murder and possessing a firearm as a felon, according to a court document filed in Hennepin County last month. Charges say officers responded near the intersection of 70th Avenue North and Lakeland Avenue North during the night of July 1 after a girl called 911 to report she had been shot. Responding officers found the girl was unconscious and nonresponsive. She was taken to the hospital where she later died, court documents say. Surveillance video in the area of the shooting showed the girl walking behind a man, later identified as the Maple Grove man, carrying a backpack through a parking lot, according to charges. He walked away from the girl, and "briefly" out of the camera's view. Charges say the man was holding a firearm when he reappeared on the video, which then showed the man throwing the backpack at the girl and shooting the firearm. The girl allegedly grabbed her torso before running away and pulling a firearm from her waistband, which she did not aim or fire at anyone. Video showed the man running from the scene, taking off a blue sweater and putting it in a dumpster, charges say. The sweater was later recovered. Investigators allegedly used data from the girl's cellphone to learn she had been communicating with the man's cellphone in the time leading up to the shooting. Charges say police identified the man in the surveillance video as the Maple Grove man using recent booking photos. The man's next court hearing is scheduled for Aug. 18. McIntyre, who was initially charged with first-degree murder, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge on Monday. State prosecutors say McIntyre stabbed her husband to death on May 11, 2025. "This conviction ensures justice is served for the victim and his loved ones," Attorney General Dana Nessel said in a statement. "My office remains committed to supporting Lake County during this transition and ensuring violent offenders are held accountable." McIntyre will be sentenced at a later date.
