One of TV's 'most shocking cliffhangers' is still horrifying 15 years later

Metro18 hours ago

I can count on one hand the number of times that I've been left truly shocked by an episode of television.
Take, for instance, Pedro Pascal's gruesome fight against 'The Mountain' in Game of Thrones season 4, or Adriana being driven into the woods in in The Sopranos season 5's fantastic 'Long Term Parking' – both episodes left me frozen on the spot by the time the credits rolled.
As of today, TV fans have an embarrassment of riches to choose from, as streaming services from Apple TV to Netflix continue to throw enormous budgets at star-studded line-ups.
But despite seemingly endless projects being approved left, right and centre – those hard-hitting, stop-you-in-your-tracks kind of moments are still hard to come by.
That is why today, 15 years after it was originally released on June 13, it is important to highlight 'masterclasses' like Breaking Bad's gut-wrenching 'Full Measure' that has, and continues, to stand the test of time.
Praised by fans and critics alike – what is it that makes this season 3 cliffhanger so special, and why does it deserve its place among the all-time great episodes of television?
If you haven't already seen Breaking Bad, firstly – what is wrong with you? But secondly, you may want to be wary of some upcoming spoilers ahead.
For those who have enjoyed Vince Gilligan's Albuquerque adventure about a cancer-ridden chemistry teacher who turns into a crystal meth drug lord, there are a number of spectacular episodes to enjoy.
Unfortunately for me, that episode with Hank Schrader was ruined for me by my Dad, who randomly watched it while on a flight without ever having seen the programme.
Similarly, I already knew what was going to happen in that other infamous episode involving Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito).
But what I certainly did not see coming was the nail-biting finale of season 3.
The episode starts tamely enough with a flashback to Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and Skyler (Anna Gunn) touring their future home.
But soon after, what transcends is one of the most fearsome desert stand-offs in the entire series between Walter and Gus.
Gus chastises Walter for killing two dealers in order to save Jesse (Aaron Paul) and orders him to use a new lab partner, Gale Boetticher, whom Walter had previously used to replace his partner.
Later, Gus tells Gale that Walt has cancer and he may not have long to live. Accordingly, he wants him to be ready to take over the super lab when Walter passes, but in reality he is planning to kill Walter.
As Jesse and Walt start to sniff out this plan, they come to the realisation that they must kill Gale in order for them to both survive.
But, before they can hatch their plan, Mike (Jonathan Banks) lures Walter into the lab to kill him.
As Walter pleads for his life, even offering to give up Jesse, he pulls a complete reversal and tells Jesse through a last-ditch phone call to 'do it' before Mike kills him.
As Mike demands to know what Walt has done, Jesse drives over to Gale, who is at home making tea when he hears a knock on the door.
Fighting back tears, Jesse points the gun at Gale who pleads 'you don't have to do this', before he pulls the trigger.
If the head-pounding tension that's expertly crafted throughout isn't enough, the episode is yet another example where one of its main characters is placed in an impossibly complex situation.
In tune with the message of this series – we as the viewer are forced to question why we want Walter and Jesse to survive, despite them agreeing to kill somebody else.
It's no wonder that the episode has been described as a 'pure adrenaline rush' and 'bone chilling' by fans online.
Speaking on a Reddit page dedicated to the episode, ualreadyknew said: 'Full Measure has always been my favourite episode.'
EvenMeaning8077 added: 'Half measures/full measures together I think were the best episodes of the show.'
Reviewing the episode on IMDb, where it has retained a 9.7 rating, Red_Identity also said: 'An unforgettable conclusion to an unforgettable season.'
And_mikkelsen also said at the time it was released: 'This episode had me on the edge of my seat right up to that shocking final scene!!
'You could feel the tension and suspense! The 'scene' with Mike was incredible! Masterful direction! Once again BB delivers.' More Trending
The corny phrase – 'they just don't make them like this anymore' – did pop into my head when thinking about this episode, but with how strong of a place TV is in today, that just feels unfair to say.
What has always fascinated me about great television is how, despite us knowing what the magic trick is – that it isn't real – it still has the ability to transcend you into a place of wonder.
And with an episode like 'Full Measure' – one that can rip out your heart and dump it right in front of you, whether you're on a train watching through your iPhone or sitting at home on the sofa – that's what makes it so unique.

Little-known Netflix horror is 'certified fresh' with 5-star rating

Under The Shadow is a completely original take on horror and is a must-watch for all fans of the genre, with the Persian language film being described as a 'future horror classic' For those who enjoy a good scare, Netflix has a hidden gem that's been described as a future horror movie classic. Under The Shadow, with its rave reviews, is definitely worth your time. This unique horror film is set in 1980s post-revolutionary Tehran during the war. It follows the story of medical student Shideh, barred from continuing her studies, and her daughter Dorsa, left alone after her husband is drafted into military service. Most of the film unfolds within their apartment, amidst falling missiles. ‌ A superstitious neighbour suggests that the bombs carry cursed spirits. Soon, Shideh becomes convinced that a supernatural entity is possessing her daughter, leading to a struggle against both natural and supernatural forces. ‌ Despite its unique premise, the film still delivers classic horror thrills - sudden window breaks or even a popping toaster are enough to make you jump and keep you on edge for a nerve-wracking hour and a half, reports the Mirror US. The film's cinematography, released in 2016, sets it apart, leaving viewers thoroughly unnerved and questioning which horrors are real and which are imagined. Under The Shadow marks the directorial debut of British-Iranian filmmaker Babak Anvari, paving the way for his subsequent releases - Wounds, starring Armie Hammer and Dakota Johnson, and I Came By, featuring George MacKay and Hugh Bonneville. The film Under the Shadow garnered widespread acclaim, boasting an impressive 99% 'certified fresh' rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The Observer film critic Mark Kermode showered it with praise, awarding it five stars and writing: "With this terrific feature debut, Anvari lifts the veil on his heroines' hidden lives and leaves us all dreaming with our eyes wide open." Selected as the British entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars, the Persian language film received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics. However, some audience members were more divided. ‌ One viewer gave the film three stars on Google Reviews, stating: "Under the Shadow is a unique blend of horror and historical context. While it had its moments of brilliance, I can't help but feel that it didn't fully live up to its potential." In contrast, another reviewer awarded it five stars, writing: "Wow. just amazing. A perfect example of a well-written, directed movie. The acting, VFX, sound design and production design etc are worth mentioning. Watch it on a cold dark night, when you are alone, this gave me a real chill. ""The brilliance is that, for a normal audience, it's a scary, horror movie, but, for those who search beyond, there are metaphors and beyond just a horror movie. ".

Harry 'snubs' Royal Family with brutal Trooping the Colour move amid bitter feud

As royal fans around the world prepare to watch Trooping the Colour - one of the highlights of the royal calendar - expert Jennie Bond reveals why Prince Harry will not be among them It is one of the rare occasions where the whole of the Royal Family is out in force standing shoulder-to-shoulder. And that is exactly what is expected to happen today when the Firm stands united to celebrate Trooping the Colour. The event, which is the King's official birthday celebration, is full of pomp and pageantry and includes the King leading his family out to the Buckingham Palace balcony for the exhilarating RAF flypast that includes the Red Arrows. However, in recent years, there has been no sign of the King's estranged son, Prince Harry, or his wife, Meghan Markle, joining the event. ‌ ‌ They last appeared on the palace balcony with the rest of the royals in 2019 - just months before they dramatically quit their royal roles. Since then their relationship with the royals has crumbled after railing against them in their Netflix series and Harry's memoir, Spare. Just weeks ago, Harry revealed he is no longer speaking to his father, but admitted he would like reconciliation with him and his older brother Prince William. But despite Trooping the Colour giving Harry a chance to watch his family in action, royal expert Jennie Bond says she is not sure if the Duke of Sussex will even tune in on TV. The former BBC royal correspondent told the Mirror: "There's no way Prince Harry will be watching the ceremony - after all, it will be the middle of the night in California. I don't suppose he wastes much time looking at events he is no longer part of. "But it must be strange to see his whole family on parade, doing their duty and being cheered by huge crowds while he lives such a different life so far away. "The day is also a chance for us all to see the family unite around the King, and the balcony moment is always a highlight. Over the years, we have seen a toddler Prince Harry sticking his tongue out, Prince George looking distinctly bored, a young Princess Charlotte looking a little tearful and Savannah Phillips clapping her hand over George's mouth to keep him quiet! It's always a heyday for Royal watchers! ‌ "Of course, that must make it a bit of an ordeal for the Royal Family: everyone has to be on their best behaviour. It must also require some pretty skilful horsemanship from the Prince of Wales, the Princess Royal and Prince Edward to keep their steeds under control for the best part of two hours. "But they will know that there is a powerful symbolism about such senior members of the Royal family riding as escort to guard the King. And William has been quoted as saying that he really enjoys it." ‌ The annual event of Trooping the Colour has marked the official birthday of the King or Queen for more than 260 years. The ceremony involves hundreds of horses and soldiers carrying out complex battlefield drill manoeuvres to military music. More than 1,400 soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians come together for the impressive display. During the parade, the royals will travel from Buckingham Palace down The Mall to Horse Guards Parade in a procession - either on horseback or in carriages. At Horse Guards, they then watch the military display before joining the procession back to Buckingham Palace once it is over. After the parade, the royals then gather on the Palace balcony for a march-past and the fly-past by the RAF, which includes the Red Arrows, and will conclude the day's celebrations. And Jennie added: "Trooping the Colour is a dazzling spectacle. It's held in June in the hope that the sun will be shining, the crowds will be warm and the breastplates and swords of the Household Cavalry will be sparkling. It marks the Monarch's official birthday and is a chance to see all the pomp and pageantry that Britain excels at. "Historically, the Colour (or flag) was trooped - or displayed - on the battlefield as a rallying point for the soldiers. Today it is not only an exercise in military precision, but also a rallying point for crowds and the TV audience to unite around the monarchy. "I've been lucky enough to attend several Troopings and I defy anyone to keep their feet still as the drums thump out the beat to the military music and the horse's hooves go thundering by. It really is a spectacle and a half."

Netflix's Virgin River season 7 release date as star confirms exciting news

Season seven of the hit Netflix show Virgin River could be airing on sooner than expected, as Alexandra Breckenridge drops some exciting news... Virgin River fans have a reason to get excited as Alexandra Breckenridge - who stars as Mel Monroe in the beloved Netflix drama - has offered an exciting update on the long-awaited seventh season. The hit romance series follows Mel, a nurse practitioner who relocates to the quiet town of Virgin River in Northern California after suffering a heartbreaking loss. There, she finds herself drawn to local bar owner and former marine, Jack Sheridan (played by Martin Henderson). ‌ Their slow burning on and off again romance has captured the hearts of viewers over the past six seasons, with the pair finally tying the knot at the end of season six. ‌ Season seven promises more twists, shocking betrayals, unresolved family drama and the unraveling of a mysterious disappearance that has left viewers on the edge of their seats. Alexandra recently took to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes glimpse from the set with her 1.3 million followers, hinting that production is nearly finished. "Good morning, I feel like I'm on day 857 of filming season 7," she joked in a video update. As laughter can be heard in the background of the video, Alexandra adds: "Can you hear that? There's people laughing outside. They seem to be having a grand old time." She then excitedly announces: "We're almost done! Can you believe it? I can't even believe it. Almost to the finish line." ‌ Alexandra went on to speculate about the possible release date for the upcoming season. "I keep wondering if they're going to put the show out this year. What do you guys think? Probably, right?" she speculated further. "I mean, if they have it, they'll probably drop it this year, 2025," she teased. However, she was quick to clarify her comments adding: "I don't know any information. I'm the last to know..." ‌ While fans will still have to wait for the official release date to come from Netflix and the show's producers, Alexandra's update is the strongest indication yet that fans might be seeing the seventh season sooner than they expected. The cast gathered in Vancouver earlier this year, to start filming the show. This led viewers to speculate that the seventh season would be released earlier in late January of next year. ‌ According to a Netflix insider site, the cast will wrap up on set on June 26, after filming 10 episodes for season seven. With filming for the sixth season spanning from February to May 2024, the production team managed to get the season edited and finished to be released just a few months later in December. This meant season six took a total of seven months in post-production before premiering on Netflix. This led fans to believe, by using a similar timeframe, that season seven would air on Netflix by January 2026. Although now with Alexandra's announcement, it could be sooner than we think.
