Boeing Defense Workers Reject Contract in New Labor Turmoil

(Bloomberg) -- Boeing Co. faces the risk of a strike at its St. Louis defense hub after union workers rejected a contract offer that would boost their wages by 20% over four years. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 837, which represents 3,200 Boeing defense workers in Missouri and Illinois, voted overwhelmingly against the new terms Sunday. The Boeing proposal 'fell short of addressing the priorities and sacrifices' of the company's skilled workforce, the union said in a statement. 'Our members are standing together to demand a contract that respects their work and ensures a secure future.' While the present contract expires at 11:59 p.m. Central Time on Sunday, management still has a chance to win over rank-and-file members by sweetening its offer during a seven-day 'cooling off' period. If that's unsuccessful, IAM Local 837 workers will walk off the job and shut down manufacturing in Boeing's military aircraft hub. The aerospace manufacturer is seeking to avoid another labor standoff after a strike by a Seattle-based Machinists union crippled manufacturing at its commercial jet factories for more than two months last year. Boeing could not be immediately reached for comment. Any labor strife would be costly for Boeing's defense division, which hasn't earned an annual profit since 2022 and is in the middle of a turnaround. A strike would shut down assembly lines for Boeing's F-15 and F/A-18 fighter jets, T-7A trainer, MQ-25 drone refueler and other weapons systems. The labor uncertainty will be a focus for analysts when Boeing reports quarterly earnings on Tuesday. It's also a bellwether as GE Aerospace launches contract negotiations with a separate IAM local on Sunday. St. Louis workers last went on strike in 1996 and don't have a history of activism, unlike Boeing's unions in the Pacific Northwest, according to Scott Mikus, an analyst with Melius Research. Union members initially rejected management's offer during the last negotiation with Boeing in 2022, before accepting a three-year deal with a 14% general wage increase and cost-of-living adjustments. While Puget Sound labor leaders endorsed Boeing's initial offer last year, they were rebuffed by rank-and-file members embittered by an earlier 10-year contract that stripped away pensions and locked in low wage increases while inflation soared. The lengthy strike squeezed the company's working capital and spurred Boeing to sell equity worth almost $24 billion. --With assistance from Bill Haubert. Chinese weaponry failed in real war, says BJP nat'l spokesperson

Chennai: Operation Sindoor was conducted in Pakistan. However, on rebound, China was hit as its weaponry failed in the real war, BJP's national spokesperson Sudanshu Trivedi said here on Saturday. Citing the fall in the Chinese defence firm stocks after Operation Sindoor, he said, "The stocks of defence firms such as Avic Systems Chengdu, which manufactures the JF-17 aircraft planes and PL-15 (air-to-air missile) that were used by Pakistan, witnessed a significant fall of up to 10%. In contrast, prices of India's defence stocks, including Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders, rose sharply as the weapons used in the operation were indigenously made. " Speaking at the national seminar on "Road Map to Viksit Bharat – A Multidisciplinary Approach" by Tamil Nadu Higher Education Teachers Association at VIT Chennai campus, Trivedi said the time of India has arrived. Motilal redevpt on course as HC junks plea

Mumbai: Bombay high court on Friday dismissed a review plea and paved the way for the redevelopment of 141 acres of MHADA land in Goregaon West, called Motilal Nagar. MHADA recently appointed Adani Realty as the consultant and Development Agency (CDA) for the project. It is touted as the city's largest housing project. Motilal Nagar Vikas Samiti, a residents' group filed the review petition seeking recall and quashing of the HC ruling dated March 6, 2025, by Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Bharati Dangre. The residents sought, as interim relief, a stay on MHADA and the developer awarded the contract from going ahead. You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai By its March judgment, HC allowed MHADA's 2021 application to ensure redevelopment gets done via private developers' bids and disposed of PIL filed in 2013, seeking action against rampant illegal construction on the land. The society's three main contentions were that firstly, as a society, they can and ought to be allowed to self-develop the premises under the govt policy. Secondly, the society of residents can, under rule 33 (5) (2) of Development Control and Promotion Regulations (DCPR), appoint a developer of their choice. Thirdly, any development undertaken by such society, with MHADA NOC, by appointing a developer, requires 51% consent of the members. The counsel also contended that the society, in an affidavit, earlier said it wanted MHADA to do the development itself. MHADA said it floated bids and appointed Adani Realty as the CDA. The review plea before the same division bench challenged the appointment of the developer. HC said a reasoned order will be made available later. By Friday's development in court, Motilal Nagar I, II, III redevelopment projects can proceed, said a MHADA lawyer. In 2018, MHADA said the estimated project cost was Rs 21,000 crore. The developer will bear all costs, including costs for transit and rehabilitation of eligible tenements, shops, slum dwellers, other amenities. In 2013, Manjula Veeran and Tekchand Khanchandani filed two PILs in HC, seeking directions to MHADA and BMC to demolish "rampant unauthorised horizontal and vertical constructions" at Motilal Nagar I, II, and III, Goregaon West, MHADA Colony, Mumbai. The colony originally housed 400 tenants, mostly row houses.
