Karl Stefanovic and his Today co-host Sarah Abo's HUGE pay gap exposed in TV Rich List - as Nine's male stars earn over a million dollars more than their female colleagues

Daily Mail26-05-2025
Disputes over pay parity in TV Land could be set to erupt again following a bombshell report revealing the salaries of Australian television's brightest stars.
The Australian's inaugural TV Rich List report claimed that Nine star Karl Stefanovic is currently being paid an eye-watering $2million more than his Today show co-host Sarah Abo.
The report has collated the 35 highest salaries among TV stars on Australia's three commercial networks - Channel Seven, Nine and Network 10.
It revealed that Stefanovic, 50, is the highest paid small screen star, bringing home a formidable $2.8million annually, making almost three times as much as Abo, 39.
This is in stark contrast to his Today counterpart who comes in at tenth place with a salary of $800,000.
From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop.
It was also reported that Stefanovic's salary is almost as much as sitting chief executive Matt Stanton ($1.6 million) and his predecessor Mike Sneesby ($1.5 million) combined.
It appears that Nine has the deepest pockets out of the three commercial networks, with six of its stars making the top ten.
The Block host Scott Cam trailed close behind Stefanovic on $2.4million, while Lego Masters star Hamish Blake sits third on $2million.
The top ten Nine contingent is rounded out by newsreaders Alison Langdon ($1.2million), Peter Overton ($1 million) and Abo.
Meanwhile Seven's highest paid star, Gold Logie winner Larry Emdur sits in fourth place at $1.6million, while Sunrise host Natalie Barr came in fifth on $1.3million.
Meanwhile, Network Ten did not feature in the top ten at all, with their highest paid star Waleed Aly coming in at number 12 on $700,000.
Stefanovic wears a few different caps at Nine, having worked as a reporter on 60 Minutes. He has also filled in for presenters on Nine Radio (formerly Macquarie Media) stations 2GB and 4BC
This is also in stark contrast to Aly's Project co-star Sarah Harris, who clocked in at number 24 on $500,000 - $200,000 less than her co-host.
While there is quite a considerable gulf in salary between Stefanovic and Abo, the former has been in the Today chair for almost two decades while his co-host joined in 2023.
Stefanovic wears a few different caps at Nine, having worked as a reporter on 60 Minutes as well as helming the short-lived series, This Time Next Year.
He has also filled in for presenters on Nine Radio (formerly Macquarie Media) stations 2GB and 4BC.
Former Network Ten producer Rob McKnight told the publication these eye-watering salaries could soon be a thing of the past with the exception of the breakfast stars.
'The days of big network contracts are long gone,' he told the publication.
'With smaller revenues, TV networks can't afford to have big stars sitting on contracts doing nothing.'
'While there are still some exceptions due to historical deals, performers are more likely to be paid on a per show basis,' he added.
'The exception to this rule is news and breakfast shows. As these shows go all year round, hosts are signed up to multi-year contracts.'
Daily Mail Australia has reached out to Nine for comment.
It's not the first time discussions about pay parity have popped up around Stefanovic, with his former co-host Lisa Wilkinson leaving the network in 2017 over a reported salary dispute.
The Australian had previously reported that Karl was earning at least $2 million a year in a three-year contract, with a potential bonus that could take his salary to $3 million if ratings were hit.
Lisa was also was said by the Daily Telegraph to have been on a $1.1 million-a-year contract, with Nine only willing to increase the amount to $1.8million.
The amount was claimed to have not been enough for her to stay with the network and she defected to Ten where she co-hosted The Project.
Nine CEO Hugh Marks spoke out on the claims, saying he offered Lisa $1.8million, but that she asked for $2.3 million.
'I went to an incredible amount of trouble to build that [$1.8million] package for her. She wanted $2.3million,' he told the publication.

Channel Nine boss quits high profile position after saying she was going to get 'drunk' at the Logies and making X-rated comment about Jimmy Barnes

A Channel Nine boss has quit her high profile position as executive producer on A Current Affair after her shocking 'drunk' Logie Awards posts. Amy McCarthy informed colleagues she was 'standing down' in an email on Thursday following her questionable comments on Facebook earlier this month. The media professional, who has been demoted to 'senior producer' in the Sydney newsroom, shocked followers when she shared a post saying she had just arrived at the Logies and 'could get drunk now'. 'I can get drunk now. You thought you'd been spammed before! Standby!' she said. McCarthy later added: 'Luckily my phone died before any evidence could be recorded.' She also uploaded an image of Jimmy Barnes performing at the awards ceremony along with a suggestive comment, writing: 'Deserves a spot on the grid! #wouldstilldohim.' In the email sent to A Current Affair staff, McCarthy apologised for her behaviour and informed them she had made the decision to 'stand down' from the executive producer role. She also shared her regret at casting a disreputable light on the news program with the scandal, and admitted she had made 'a stupid mistake'. 'I want to thank so many of you for the love and support you've shown me over what has been a really tough week,' McCarthy wrote. 'I made a stupid mistake—one that was not meant to be hurtful or harmful in any way. But it has brought unwanted and negative attention to a show I love and a team I adore. For that, I'm very sorry. 'With the support of my family, I've had time to reflect on this and after talking with Fiona about what's appropriate for me and the show going forward, I am stepping down as EP of A Current Affair, effective immediately. 'I've worked really hard over the past 12 months to make sure ACA is the best it can be. I made a huge commitment to this show and I'm proud of what we've achieved together. 'I'm not leaving Nine, I'm heading back to the newsroom—a place I've loved for over a decade. 'I'll be joining the News production team and I'm really looking forward to jumping straight back into it.' McCarthy took extended leave from her position the day after news broke of the scandalous comments she made about Cold Chisel's 69-year-old frontman Jimmy. She then met with Fiona Dear, Nine's head of news and current affairs, several times before deciding to resign from the executive producer position, with senior reporter Steve Marshall filling in the role. McCarthy came under fire earlier this month for the 'inappropriate' social media posts she made during the Logie Awards. One Channel Nine insider told The Australian, McCarthy's comments sparked outrage and were 'out of step with Nine's drawn-out cultural review'. 'Imagine if a male news boss had made comments like that about a female singer like Delta Goodrem—it's totally inappropriate,' they said. The scandal came just months after Channel Nine reportedly cracked down on staffers after dropping the axe on Today presenter Alex Cullen. Cullen, 44, lost his job at the station in January after accepting $50,000 from billionaire Block bidder Adrian 'Mr Lambo' Portelli. The network followed the shocking news with a reminder to all employees about their 'professional obligations'. Nine's director of news and current affairs, Fiona Dear, sent the message via email to all staff. In the note to staff, which was sighted by Daily Mail, the network boss wanted to remind 'broadcast journalists and on-air talent' that their conduct was 'vital' to maintaining trust with the viewing public. 'Accordingly, we acknowledge that commercial arrangements, sponsorships and endorsements exist at most media companies, including Nine,' Dear said in the email. 'In line with our professional obligations, as well as Nine's legal and regulatory obligations, these arrangements are permitted in certain circumstances, provided the appropriate disclosure occurs and that they are conducted in accordance with Nine's policies and procedures.' Dear also wrote that all staff were obliged to conduct themselves according to professional and ethical guidelines as set out by the Commercial Television Industry Code of Practice, and Nine's Social Media Guidelines and Gift Policy. 'All Nine Group employees are required to adhere to these policies and remain up to date with any developments,' she wrote. Dear also added: 'And of course, the MEAA Journalist Code of Ethics, which applies to journalist members of the MEAA, also serves as a useful reminder of the professional standards for which journalists strive.'

Awkward moment Gen Z podcaster asks if Osher Günsberg's Australian Idol co-host James Mathison is dead - and he replies in the comments

Former Australian Idol star Osher Günsberg has been left speechless after a 28-year-old podcaster asked him whether his co-host on the show, James Mathison, was dead during a sit-down interview. The cringe-inducing gaffe occurred when the 51-year-old TV presenter was making an appearance on the latest episode of the A Bit Rogue podcast. Host Skye Sydenham was chatting to Osher about his days on Australian Idol, when she asked whether his old co-host was 'still with us'. 'You're asking me if James Mathison is dead?' a gobsmacked Osher replied. Embarrassed about her blunder, Skye attempted to quickly reset, saying, 'I was asking if he was alive.' Sharing a clip of the awkward moment on his Instagram, Osher included another interview 'highlight' where Skye appeared confused about the TV star's alter-ego Andrew G. 'Oh my God, I still can't believe that you and Andrew G are the same person,' she commented. 'How old were you when you realised that?' an amused Osher replied. 'Oh, today I'm 28, so about a minute ago,' the podcaster said with a laugh. Sydenham later sent a message to Mathison under Osher's post. 'JAMES apologies only, no condolences,' she said. Mathison, who turned 47 in January, appeared to have a sense of humour about the slip-up. 'Osh forwarded it to me,' Mathison replied. 'We found it pretty funny. In your defence to Gen Z, to anyone not active on socials is dead to them.' Osher's post, which he cheekily captioned, 'Every day is a school day', received a flood of messages from followers who saw the funny side of the interview. 'My brain hurt watching that,' one fan joked, while another said, 'Can't stop watching this, feeling ancient.' 'Oh the cheek of these youngsters,' posted a third user. Osher was as a popular VJ for Channel [V] more than two decades ago and went by the name Andrew G. He went on to co-host Australian Idol in 2003 with Mathison. Osher worked on Channel V for seven years, finishing his run as its popular presenter in 2006. At 38, Osher, whose birth name is Andrew Günsberg, dropped the Andrew G moniker and decided to change his name to Osher, which is Hebrew for 'happiness' as part of his evolving outlook on life. He fronted The Bachelor Australia since its debut in 2013, but lost his gig on the franchise last year. Former Sunrise co-anchor Sam Armytage is now set to host Bachelor spin-off The Golden Bachelor. Armytage left Channel Seven in late 2024 after 21 years on air, saying the relentless grind had 'become gruelling' and the timing was right to move on. In October 2024, she was officially announced as host of The Golden Bachelor Australia on Channel Nine.

It's a boy! Love Island Australia star welcomes son with NRL boyfriend

Love Island Australia star Cartier Surjan has welcomed a baby boy with NRL champ Jake Simkin. The couple, who began dating in 2020, shared the happy news on Instagram on Wednesday. They included a touching black and white picture of Jake, 23, gazing lovingly at the newborn as he slept in his bassinet. 'Welcome to the world, our boy,' the delighted new parents gushed in the caption. Cartier, 26, also shared another photo on her stories of their boy resting on a blanket as his proud dad looks on. Though the couple did not announce the name of their child in their Instagram post, a follower appeared to reveal their boy's name. 'Congratulations to you both, little Hunter is gorgeous,' they commented. Among the well-wishers sending messages of congratulations was Penrith Panthers NRL star Daine Laurie who said, 'Congrats my breddd xx.' Jake's Manly teammate Haumole Olakau'atu also shared, 'Yes mate, congrats guys.' 'Oh my gosh, congratulations, you two,' a third friend added. The couple announced they were expecting their first child back in April. Posing together on a beach, the parents shared a kiss as they revealed the happy news with Cartier's 213,000 followers. Cartier unzipped her black mum jeans and let her bump hang out, nuzzling her face into Jake's neck, while the dad-to-be cradled her belly. 'We are so excited to meet you,' she captioned the carousel of photos, which also included the baby's first ultrasound. 'Hi baby, can't believe I don't have to hide you anymore,' she said in another post where she could be seen admiring her pregnant belly. Cartier was coupled up with Adam Farrugia, 27, on Love Island Australia. It ran its course, however, and the two decided to be friends. Cartier then moved on with co-star Matthew Zukowski, Tammy Hembrow's now ex-husband. Cartier and Jake met in Sydney at Clovelly Beach. 'I wasn't meant to be at that beach that day, but it ended up being the easiest to get to as the traffic was awful,' she told Daily Mail. 'I spotted Jake nearby in a blue hat, and we got talking - the rest is history.'
