3 things to watch in Cowboys-Ravens preseason matchup include the battle for backup QB

The Dallas Cowboys may have fallen to the Los Angeles Rams in their first preseason game, but that's in the rearview mirror now. The joint practice just days before the game certainly impacted who saw action last Saturday, but observers were able to get a glimpse of the preseason process for new head coach Brian Schottenheimer. He chose to throw the ball early and often instead of relying on the running game he had preached for months, because he wanted to get quarterback Joe Milton III some work. When looking for things to watch for when Dallas plays the Baltimore Ravens this Saturday, the actions of the past inform the future. Can Dallas clean up the penalties? The Cowboys committed 11 penalties for 83 yards against Los Angeles, including two consecutive plays where Asim Richards was flagged for illegal formation. The coaching staff has to get players to clean up these types of penalties. There is a difference between a pass interference penalty and a false start or formation penalty; mistakes of aggression are acceptable, mistakes of concentration are not. Self-inflicted mistakes have hurt Dallas over the last few seasons, and the new coaches need to help set a new standard by addressing these issues and cleaning them up. How much improvement can Joe Milton show? Milton showcased the holes in his game that led to his fall to the sixth round in the 2024 draft, despite him being a stellar athlete with one of the strongest arms in the league. His touch and ability to read defenses continues to be a work in progress. Completing 17 of 29 passes for 143 yards with one touchdown and one interception isn't good enough. Milton must demonstrate he can learn from his poor performance, adjust, and play better against the Ravens. His final drive-plus was encouraging, and leaves something to build on in this next contest. Can the defense tackle? Dallas missed 19 tackles in the first preseason game. Nineteen. The performance forced Schottenheimer to emphasize tackling throughout the week in practice. Defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus has a defense that works best when the unit rallies to the ball and makes tackles quickly. Nothing will bring down his scheme quicker than players missing tackles. A young defense like what Dallas will deploy can be imperfect, but it has to show an ability to step up when challenged. Denzel Washington Cooked Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones So Bad Even Stephen A. Smith Was Speechless

Source: Bruce Glikas / Getty The Dallas Cowboys have been so uneventful over the past few years that even Denzel Washington is calling out owner Jerry Jones. Washington was promoting Highest 2 Lowest, the latest Spike Lee joint, on First Take Tuesday morning, and went off about the Cowboys, a team Stephen A. Smith relishes in hating. The New York native starts with love, recalling how he became interested in the team as a kid because they shared a similar style of play with his high school team. We care about your data. See our privacy policy. 'I've been a Cowboys fan since the '60s, he's making it hard for me,' he begins. 'Not to be a fan, because I'll still have a star on the side of my hat. But he's not thinking about us, he's thinking about his pockets.' Spike Lee eggs him on with a laugh, saying, 'Get Jerry Jones on the phone.' Professional sports teams are unlike any other establishment when it comes to determining their success. Usually, it's about money, and since the Cowboys hold the title of the most valuable sports franchise in the world, with a $9 billion valuation, they've already got that on lock. But when it comes to winning, no one takes them seriously since they haven't won a Super Bowl since 1997, which was also the last time they advanced to the NFC championship game. They've also only won four playoff games in the last 25 years, with losses including 2023's Wild Card round, 2022's Divisional Round, and 2021's Wild Card round. Stephen A. Smith has spoken with Jones about the team's on-field success, and Jones just touts the 'recognition, notoriety, and dollars' the team makes. Washington draws a comparison between sports and his world of acting, calling out Jerry Jones. 'There's box office, and then there's Oscars, Jerry. Been a while, huh? You ain't been to the show, you wouldn't know,' Washington says while looking dead into the camera. 'You haven't been to the show, so you don't know what it is to win.' Even the usually talkative Stephen A. Smith admits to being speechless, as Washington says that there's no beef, and his passion comes from being a fan for so long. Washington jumping into the never-ending Cowboys debate is only the latest surprising addition, as last week Nicki Minaj unknowingly got involved when Dez Bryant was name-dropped. See how social media is reacting to Washington's appearance on the sports debate show below. Denzel Washington Cooked Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones So Bad Even Stephen A. Cowboys Training Camp: Takeaways from Practice 14, Oxnard is Over, update on Diggs injury

The Dallas Cowboys have concluded their final West Coast practice of the 2025 calendar, and they are set to pack up and return to Texas in advance of their second preseason game. The Baltimore Ravens will meet them in Arlington for a Saturday night matchup, but aside from a walkthrough and some media availability on Thursday, it's a wrap on yet another four-week stint on Oxnard, CA. Wednesday's practice was highlighted by a sensational interception by a defensive lineman, giving some hints as far as what can be expected once the games count, as the Cowboys' new coaching staff continues to commit to the hide-and-no-seek mantra when it comes to what they'll reveal during the exhibition season. Here are the biggest takeaways from the final training camp practice of 2025. Sam Williams' Pick-6 Late in practice, working on goal-line situations, Dak Prescott was intercepted by defensive end Sam Williams. Williams returned the interception the entire length of the field for a Practice Pick-6. That's Dante Fowler (13) lined up wide of right tackle Terence Steele. Rookie DE Donovan Ezeiruaku (41) is standing up in the C gap and DT Solomon Thomas in the A gap. On the OL's left side, that's Mazi Smith (58) and Marshawn Kneeland (94) taking on the LG and LT, with Kenneth Murray (59) and finally Williams (54). Running Back Depth Chart According to Dallas News' Calvin Watkins, the running back pecking order seems to be settling in. Vaughn got first-team reps again. But as camp is on the cusp of closing, it seems Javonte Williams has the lead as the Week 1 starter at running back. The backup is between Hunter Luepke, Jaydon Blue and Miles Sanders. Injury Updates LT Tyler Guyton (broken knee) began working on the resistance cords on Wednesday, per ESPN's Todd Archer RB Miles Sanders (knee) returned to team drills DE Payton Turner (ribs) returned to practice RB Jaydon Blue still isn't practicing with his knee/ankle issue Trevon Diggs has ramped up to daily sessions with trainer Britt Brown, also doing ball drills Steal of the draft? The Cowboys double-dipped at running back in the spring, taking two on Day 3 in fifth-round pick Jaydon Blue and seventh-round pick Phil Mafah. Mickey Spagnola had an interesting tidbit on Wednesday that may help explain how a battering ram like Mafah fell that far despite having back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons at Clemson. In an extremely deep running back class, Mafah played his final year in college with a torn labrum, and wasn't able to work out for teams in the pre-draft process. There's an assumption the Cowboys are going to carry both veteran RBs they signed this summer, but that may not be the case. MIcah Check Still no update on renewed contract talks between Jerry Jones and Micah Parsons, both who brushed off questions about progress or trade talk.
