On March 11, 2025, reports surfaced about the death of a Russian officer in Syria, with conflicting narratives from pro-ISIS sources, Syrian journalists, and Russian media. While some linked his death to recent unrest on the Syrian coast, Russian reports claimed he died fighting terrorism and received a military funeral.
Reports On Slain Russian Officer In Syria
On March 11, 2025, a pro-Islamic State (ISIS) Telegram channel reported that Russian forces had announced the death of one of their officers in Syria. However, no details were provided regarding the circumstances of his death, or the location where his body was found. [1]
The channel shared two photos, one purportedly showing the slain officer, and another depicting two men at what appears to be a funeral ceremony.
That same day, Idlib-based Syrian reporter Humam Essa also reported on the Russian officer's death. [2] He wrote: "Coinciding with accusations of Russia's involvement in the terrorist coup attempt on the Syrian coast, official Russian local agencies have announced the death of a Russian soldier in Syria under mysterious circumstances." Humam noted that the soldier was a former officer in Russia's security service who had later been deployed to Syria as a senior gunner.
Russian Media Refutes Alleged Involvement in Syrian Coastal Conflict
On March 10, Russian media reported that a resident of the Bazarno-Karabulaksky District in the Saratov Region had died while fighting terrorism in Syria: "Oleg Suslov did not return home. He held the rank of private and served as a senior shooter," the district administration stated. [3] According to these reports, Suslov was born on November 11, 1992, in Saratov. He signed a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense on October 9, 2024, and was subsequently deployed to Syria.
Refuting claims that he was killed in the recent unrest on the Syrian coast, Russian reports stated that Suslov had died on February 19, 2025, leaving behind two young daughters. "Today, a farewell ceremony for the serviceman was held in Lesnaya Neelovka. His body was buried under a triple salvo of gunfire," the district administration reported. [4]

Ukraine downs Russian Su-35 fighter jet

Shafaq News/ On Saturday, Ukraine's military said it shot down a Russian Su-35 fighter jet in the Kursk region during an air force operation. The Ukrainian military did not provide further details, and Russia has not commented on the claim. The Su-35 is one of Russia's most advanced multi-role fighter jets, capable of carrying precision-guided missiles and engaging both air and ground targets. Meanwhile, Russia's Ministry of Defense reported today that its air defenses shot down four Ukrainian drones over the Belgorod region, a border area that has seen frequent drone and artillery attacks in recent weeks. Ukraine has intensified drone strikes deep inside Russian territory. Last week, Kyiv's security service (SBU) launched a large drone attack targeting over 40 Russian military aircraft, damaging or destroying multiple Tu-95 and Tu-22 strategic bombers.

Businessmen Arbitrarily Detained in Iraq Released

By John Lee. Ireland's Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Harris, has confirmed the release on bail of Robert Pether, an Australian engineer resident in Ireland, who has been imprisoned in Iraq since 2021. The announcement comes following a phone call from Iraq's Foreign Minister, Fuad Hussein, who personally informed the Tánaiste of the development. Pether, who remains in Iraq for now, has been at the centre of an ongoing diplomatic effort by the Irish government. Minister Harris described the release as " very welcome news " in what has been a " long and distressing saga " for Pether's wife and family. The Tánaiste also thanked Irish diplomatic staff in the region for their continued support and advocacy. He reiterated concerns about Pether's health and outstanding legal charges but expressed hope for a positive resolution and Pether's eventual return to his home in Roscommon. Pether and his Egyptian colleague, Khalid Radwan, were detained in April 2021 in relation to a dispute over the construction of the new Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) headquarters in Baghdad. They have been sentenced to five years in prison and jointly fined $12 million on charges of fraud. Their families claim they were tricked into travelling to Iraq to attempt to resolve the dispute. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found that they were " arbitrarily detained on discriminatory grounds ", and referred the case to the Special Rapporteur on torture. In February 2023, the International Chamber of Commerce's (ICC) Court of Arbitration ruled that the CBI was at fault in the dispute, and ordered it to pay $13m to Abu Dhabi-based Cardno ME (CME). The statement from the Irish Tánaiste did not refer to Radwan, but AFP news agency cites an Iraqi official as confirming his release. (Sources: Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade; AFP)
