ED conducts first-ever raids in Andaman & Nicobar Islands linked to cooperative bank 'fraud'
The case pertains to the Andaman Nicobar State Cooperative Bank (ANSCB) and its vice chairman Kuldeep Rai Sharma.
Sharma, a 57-year-old Congress leader, is a former MP of the UT (2019-24).
Nine places in and around Port Blair and two in Kolkata were raided by the officials of the central probe agency under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the sources said.
This is the first time that the agency has undertaken searches in the Union Territory located in the Bay of Bengal, they said.
Sources said the agency has recovered some documents pointing towards "large-scale" irregularities in the grant of loans and overdraft facilities by ANSC Bank.
The role of former Congress MP Sharma is also under the scanner of the ED, according to the sources.
They alleged that a group of about 15 entities/companies were created by suspects for the benefit of Sharma and loan facilities of more than Rs 200 crore were fraudulently taken by these entities from the ANSCB.
The sources said documents collected indicate that loan facilities were extended to various shell companies/ firms by ignoring the laid down procedures and guidelines of the bank.
The money laundering case stems from an FIR of the Crime and Economic Offences Wing of the Andaman Nicobar Police.

Chandigarh: Absconding GBP officials declared proclaimed offenders
The special court of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), Chandigarh, has declared absconding officials of real estate firm Gupta Builders and Promoters (GBP) as proclaimed offenders. The company and its management are accused of duping investors of more than Rs 1,000 crore across the Tricity and several other cities in India before fleeing abroad around four years ago. According to court records, the accused had repeatedly failed to appear despite multiple arrest warrants being issued against them. Given their continued absence, the court declared them proclaimed offenders. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has been investigating the matter under the PMLA and has already attached properties worth around Rs 148 crore belonging to the group and its directors. The seized assets include commercial projects at Zirakpur, residential properties, and agricultural land. Those declared PO by the court include GBP group officials Satish Kumar, Pradeep Kumar, Raman Gupta, Vinod Gupta and Anupam Gupta. Despite repeated summons, the accused never appeared before the court, leading to the issuance of non-bailable warrants. The GBP Group also faces numerous cases before the Consumer Commission, several complaints with the Chandigarh Police, and multiple cheque bounce cases — in which they too have failed to appear, prompting more warrants. As per reports, the Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA) had also filed a complaint against GBP Group in the district court in November 2021 for failing to comply with its orders. When the accused failed to appear, the Chief Judicial Magistrate's court declared them fugitives in October 2022. The accused are also on the run in a case filed by the Income Tax Department.

President Donald Trump said he will lay out his administration's plan to reduce crime in the nation's capital, even as violent incidents in the District of Columbia are at a 30-year low. Trump said in a social media post that he will have a news conference on Monday that 'will, essentially, stop violent crime in Washington, DC.' Trump on Thursday directed an increased presence of federal law enforcement around Washington, DC, a day after threatening the federal government could seize control of it. That move came a day after a former member of his so-called Department of Government Efficiency was injured during an attempted carjacking in DC. The city, which has voted overwhelmingly for Democrats for decades, has also been seeking to end all federal control of the city, a movement known as 'home rule.' Violence has been dropping in the District for two years, according to local police data. As of Jan. 3, violent crime in DC in 2024 was at a 30-year low, according to the US Justice Department. Trump's powers to 'take over' the capital city are limited. Partial home rule was established by Congress in 1973, which allows residents to elect their own mayor, who appoints the police chief. Residents also elect a District council that can pass local laws. But those laws can be overturned by Congress, which approves the city's budget. Trump can't override the home rule law without Congress, but he can assign federal agents to conduct law enforcement operations inside the city and has done so before, acting independently of the Metropolitan Police Department. He has also said that he is considering deploying the National Guard in the city. The president has often, without evidence, cast cities around the country as crime-ridden, and has increased those complaints about DC since the former staffer was attacked. Trump said on his Truth Social platform earlier this week that he wants to 'federalize' the city if local officials don't do more to address crime. Trump has issued executive orders this year that created a panel to coordinate efforts to improve safety and address graffiti and vandalism in the city, along with one that ordered a crackdown on homeless encampments on federal lands.

Next-Gen BrahMos in pipeline, says DRDO chief in Pune
Pune (Maharashtra) [India], August 9 (ANI): DRDO is looking to build a next-generation BrahMos missile, which will be a lighter, smaller version of the current version, the organisation's Chairman and Department of Defence Secretary (R&D) Samir V Kamat said on Saturday. BrahMos-NG (Next Generation) will be able to fit into any platform, unlike the current missile, which can only be used with the Sukhoi aircraft, the DRDO chief added. 'We are looking at BrahMos-NG, which is a smaller version of BrahMos, which can then be fitted on all our other platforms. Today, BrahMos can only be fitted on the Sukhoi platform, but if we can make it smaller, we can fit it on all our platforms. We are planning to start it soon," he at a press conference in Pune on the sidelines of the convocation ceremony of the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), Kamat also highlighted the pivotal role of indigenous technologies, including the BrahMos missile and Akashteer air defence system, in Operation Sindoor.'When it comes to offensive weapons, BrahMos was the primary weapon used, which was launched from our Sukhoi Mark 1 platform. When it comes to defensive weapon systems, the Akashteer system, the anti-drone system," he added. Kamat further mentioned how the Akashteer network helped in identifying any threats coming towards India, and also in deciding what kind of weapon could be used to neutralise such threats.'All the sensors were networked using the Akashteer, which helped in identifying the threats coming towards us and then deploying the right kind of weapon to neutralise those threats. Advanced early warning and control aircraft were also used for advanced surveillance. I'm sure going ahead, this number will keep increasing."Earlier, it was reported that the annual defence production has achieved a record high of Rs 1,50,590 crore for the Financial Year (FY) 2024-25. The milestone represents a robust 18 per cent growth over the previous fiscal's output of Rs 1.27 lakh crore, and a staggering 90 per cent increase since FY 2019-20, when the figure was Rs 79,071 crore.
