McIntosh eases into 400 medley final, Marchand almost misses out
McIntosh cruised to victory in her heat in four minutes and 35.56 seconds for the final later on Sunday, nearly 12 seconds shy of her world record (4:23.65) from Canadian trials in June.
The biggest cheers might have been for 12-year-old Yu Zidi, though, as the Chinese schoolgirl won her heat to qualify third for the final in 4:36.49, less than a second off the personal best (4:35.53) that clinched the national title in May.
Marchand, who took the 200m IM gold after setting a world record in the semi-finals, led halfway through his 400 heat but slowed up almost too much in the breaststroke and freestyle legs as he qualified seventh for the final in the evening session.
While nearly three seconds behind Japanese top seed Tomoyuki Matsushita, Olympic champion and world record holder Marchand will be strongly backed to win his third 400 world title.
With American Carson Foster, the Olympic bronze medallist, pulling out of the heats with an ankle injury, the United States did not qualify a swimmer in the final for the first time in over 50 years of world championships.
New Zealand's defending champion Lewis Clareburt also bombed out of the heats.
The U.S. qualified fastest for the men's 4x100 medley relay final with Jack Alexy swimming the anchor leg for the Paris Olympic silver medallists.
But Olympic champions China crashed out as the ninth quickest nation along with 11th-ranked Australia.
The U.S. women also qualified fastest in the medley relay in 3:54.49, a second clear of second-ranked Australia, with Germany third fastest.
Eight gold medals will be contested in a packed programme in the evening session, with German iron man Florian Wellbrock gunning for the men's 1,500 freestyle title to boost his bumper haul after sweeping the open water events.
Lithuanian world record holder Ruta Meilutyte will bid for a fourth successive women's 50 breaststroke world title since returning to the pool from a two-year ban for anti-doping rule violations in 2021.

Chinese club Shandong given 2-year ban from Asian club competition after no-show
Aug 5 (Reuters) - Chinese club Shandong Taishan has been banned from Asian club competition for two years for its no-show against South Korean side Ulsan HD in the Asian Champions League (ACL) Elite in February. The Chinese Super League side pulled out hours before the February 19 match, blaming "serious physical discomfort" of players and saying they were unable to form a team. The Asian Football Confederation's (AFC) Disciplinary and Ethics Commission said Shandong would not be able to play in the AFC's club competitions up to and including the 2026/27 season editions, and fined the club $50,000. It also ordered Shandong to return a participation fee of $600,000 and a performance bonus of $200,000 to the AFC along with compensation of $40,000 to Ulsan "in respect of damages and losses claimed" by the South Korean club. Shandong's pull-out came days after the club said it had banned supporters for "inappropriate behaviour" during a home ACL match against South Korean team Gwangju after fans in the crowd displayed images of South Korea's last military dictator Chun Doo-hwan. Hundreds of people are estimated to have died or gone missing when the South Korean government violently put down the Gwangju uprising by pro-democracy protesters in May 1980, when Chun was the de facto leader of the country after leading a military coup.

Aug 5 (Reuters) - Alexander Zverev rallied from a set down to beat defending champion Alexei Popyrin 6-7(8) 6-4 6-3 in Toronto and move into the semi-finals of the Canadian Open on Monday. Top seed Zverev was unable to convert two set points in a tight first set, but built up 3-0 leads in both the second and third sets to clinch the win in two hours and 42 minutes. The victory took the German's head-to-head record against Australian Popyrin to 4-0 and sent him to his 75th semi-final on the ATP Tour, joining Novak Djokovic as the only active men's tennis player to have reached the mark.
