LABUAN (Aug 12): Labuan Batik is set to step onto Malaysia's fashion stage before making its mark internationally, celebrated for its vibrant colours, floral and marine-inspired motifs and deep connection to the island's cultural heritage.
With distinctive artistry and innovative techniques, the craft is gaining momentum as one of Labuan's most promising cultural exports.
The newly established Labuan Warisan (LAWA) Craft Gallery, officially opened by Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, on July 27, has quickly become a must-visit destination for both local and international visitors.
Within just weeks of its opening, the gallery has become a cultural hub, offering a first-hand look at the creative process behind batik-making and serving as a showcase of Labuan's distinctive artistry.
Visitors can watch artisans at work, learn about the painstaking stages of batik production and purchase pieces that carry the island's identity.
Labuan batik stands apart for its innovative use of sago, a starch extracted from the pith of the sago palm (Metroxylon sagu), as the primary resist material in place of conventional candle wax. Applied with a canting or brush, sago creates intricate patterns while being environmentally friendly and abundant in Labuan.
This eco-conscious choice not only strengthens the island's sustainability credentials but also sets Labuan batik apart as an art form that reflects its unique natural resources.
At the forefront of this movement is Mastura Abd Razak, 44, a Labuan-born Bruneian and the sole batik entrepreneur on the island.
Trained by the Sabah branch of the Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation (Kraftangan Malaysia), Mastura operates the business with her husband, Abd Rahmad Abd Malik, 45, who is from Sarawak.
The couple's workshop at LAWA has become a focal point for cultural appreciation, skill transfer and heritage preservation. Mastura has also begun receiving orders from government agencies and corporate sectors, in addition to serving individual customers.
Their enterprise enjoys full support from the Department of Federal Territories (JWP), whose backing has enabled the expansion of batik promotion initiatives and the participation of Labuan batik in local and regional exhibitions.
Speaking to Bernama, Mastura believes such support is crucial to raising the profile of Labuan batik nationally and internationally.
'With continuous government backing, Labuan batik can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Terengganu's batik on the international stage.
'Within the next five years, I envision Labuan batik being worn by well-known models at fashion shows in Malaysia and abroad. It will be our island's gift to the world, a keepsake for visitors and a statement piece for global markets,' she said.
Mastura said beyond the artistic value, the rise of Labuan batik also holds economic potential, as unique cultural products like batik offer a strong selling point for visitors seeking authentic souvenirs.
She said if marketed effectively, Labuan batik could contribute to the island's creative economy, create job opportunities for local artisans, and position Labuan as a niche destination for cultural tourism. – Bernama

BizBelia to empower Brunei youth: Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah

The monarch said the scheme offers local youth entrepreneurs access to financial resources from Brunei's financial institutions. Sultan Hassanal hopes it will stimulate the growth and development of youth enterprises and set an example for other financial institutions to involve youth more actively. With proper guidance and robust support from relevant parties, the Ruler is confident that youth entrepreneurs will shine not only nationally but also on the international stage. He voiced these views in a titah at the 20th National Youth Day on Saturday (Aug 16). The present generation of youth, the monarch noted, possesses a strong spirit and great leadership potential. The positive transformation shown by the youth signals their willingness to shoulder the heavy responsibilities of leadership, a key element in Realising Brunei Vision 2035. The government remains committed to empowering youth and providing a conducive environment for their growth. In pursuing Wawasan Brunei 2035, youth are pivotal as Drivers of Economic Transformation. Sultan Hassanal welcomed the shift in mindset from job seekers to job creators through entrepreneurship and business ventures. Acknowledging the challenges in obtaining financing to start a business—particularly for youth who lack business performance records or collateral— Sultan Hassanal announced the establishment of BizBelia, a Shariah-compliant micro-financing scheme for youth entrepreneurs. The scheme results from a strategic collaboration between the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) and Bank Usahawan Berhad. The Ruler also voiced concerns about exploitation of youth by criminal syndicates offering lucrative rewards. Sultan Hassanal cited reports of local youths involved in cross-border drug smuggling orchestrated by international trafficking groups. The monarch also warned of overseas job scam syndicates targeting youth, noting that such schemes threaten the future of Bruneian youth and the nation's social harmony. Efforts to combat these syndicates must be strengthened through education and awareness, law enforcement, and community support. Youth themselves should bolster resilience through religious knowledge and the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) values to safeguard a successful and dignified future. The Ruler urged youth to cooperate with all segments of society, including senior citizens, in shaping Brunei's harmonious future. He extended heartfelt congratulations to all Bruneian youths for their commitment to developing and advancing the nation, stressing that youth remain the pillar of hope for Brunei's bright and glorious future. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN

Sarawak Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, described the launch as a milestone and a bold and timely initiative that reflects Sarawak's commitment to nurturing innovation, entrepreneurship, and inclusive economic growth. 'In Sarawak, we are not just building roads and bridges. 'We are building the infrastructure of ideas, talent, and opportunity,' he said in a speech read by his deputy, Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat, at Makeramai Makerspace, Plaza Merdeka here. Abdul Karim stressed that innovation requires more than just funding ― it demands belief, mentorship, collaboration, and strategic risk-taking ― and that SBAN's role is to bridge the gap between ambition and opportunity by connecting entrepreneurs with supportive angel investors. 'With the formation of SBAN, Sarawak is making a bold declaration: We are ready to grow our own community of angel investors ― individuals who are not just investing in businesses, but in people, ideas, and the future of our state,' he said. He also urged investors to consider 'return on impact' by supporting rural entrepreneurs, women-led ventures, indigenous innovators, and changemakers. SBAN chairman Dato Patrick Liew said the launch was the result of more than three years of work, with the network officially established in March 2025. He noted the significance of SBAN's strategic partnership with the Malaysian Business Angel Network (MBAN), which he described as the national angel investment backbone. 'SBAN now stands as a critical platform to support and strengthen the Sarawak startup community,' Liew said, highlighting EB Tech Senabah, a Sarawak startup mentored by the network that will represent Malaysia at the Startup World Cup in San Francisco this October, as proof that local talent can compete on the global stage. 'One thing becomes clear — building a thriving ecosystem is not impossible, but it requires committed support, guidance, mentorship, and coaching. 'Ultimately, my passion and goal is to see Sarawak-born startups succeed on the global stage,' he said. The launch was attended by Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation Berhad (SDEC) chief executive officer Dato Ir Ts Sudarnoto Osman, MBAN president Peter Wee, Cradle group chief executive officer Norman Matthieu Vanhaecke, and council members from both SBAN and MBAN. A highlight of the event was the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MoA) between SBAN and MBAN, witnessed by Ripin, SDEC and Cradle representatives. The collaboration aims to link Sarawak's investor community to national and regional networks, expand access to quality deal flow, and share best practices in angel investing. The event also featured a panel discussion on building a robust angel investment ecosystem, with Liew, Sudarnoto, Wee, and Norman sharing insights and opportunities for SBAN's growth. entrepreneurship Sarawak Business Angel Network startup
