Snap announces new Spectacles coming in 2026 — lighter, more immersive and available to the public

Tom's Guide2 days ago

Late in 2024, Snap teased the 5th generation Spectacles, its augmented reality smart glasses. At the time, the glasses were only just becoming available to device developers who could rent a pair for $99 a month.
Today (June 10), during the Augmented World Exhibition (AWE) 2025, the public will get to don the new Specs in 2026.
Specs are AI-assisted, with Snap claiming that developers already have a number of "new experiences" ready for the new Spectacles.
'We believe the time is right for a revolution in computing that naturally integrates our digital experiences with the physical world, and we can't wait to publicly launch our new Specs next year,' said Evan Spiegel, co-founder and CEO of Snap Inc., in a press release.
Some of those tools we got to see last year, and again during a demo in April.
These include Pool Assist, which helps you make better plays on the billiards table. There's also Super Travel that is supposed to translate signs, menus and other text while abroad.
As for the form factor, the developer glasses we got to test are fairly bulky. Spiegel announced during AWE 2025 that the new ones would be lighter and a "much smaller form factor."

"No bulky headset, no puck, no tether, no phone required," Spiegal said during his keynote. "They're fully standalone, lightweight, immersive AR glasses, powered by Snapdragon, with an operating system built from the ground up for augmented reality."
Before the new Specs arrive, Snap is also upgrading Snap OS with four "major" updates.
These will mostly affect developers, but for the public, you will see new Lenses that the Specs will be able to access.
Snap did not provide a specific launch month or date, so we don't know when exactly in 2026 the updated Spectacles will actually arrive.

Snap Launches ‘Lens+‘ Paid Subscription Offering for Advanced AR Features

This story was originally published on Social Media Today. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Social Media Today newsletter. Snapchat's adding another element to its popular Snapchat+ subscription offering, with 'Lens+,' which will provide exclusive access to a range of additional AR experiences that are only available to paying users. So now, not only will you be able to pay for the 30+ add-on features of Snapchat+, which aim to enhance your overall in-app experience, but you'll also be able to get new, advanced AR tools and experiences in the app, all for the low price of $8.99 per month (with Snapchat+ subscription included). As explained by Snap: 'In addition to all of the value from our Snapchat+ subscription, Lens+ provides access to hundreds of Lenses and AR experiences that let you play, create, and share Snaps with friends in whole new ways.' Which could also provide a new monetization pathway for Snap's 400,000+ AR creators. Snap's Lens Studio has been a powerful launching pad for AR development, and enabling more people to create their own AR experiences. This could provide a means for them to charge for these advanced options, and facilitate all new growth opportunities within Snap's creator ecosystem. But it's not moving in that direction just yet. Snap says that, at launch, Lens+ subscribers will be able to access Lenses built by Snapchat, as well as some from select creators, 'including exclusive AI video Lenses, a brand new Bitmoji Game Lens, and more.' The AI options, presumably, will be the big carrot here, as Snap looks to lure more paying subscribers with next-level features. Snapchat says that it will be looking to add new AR experiences every week, as it builds on the offering. It's another avenue to expanded revenue intake for the app, which, as noted, has already seen success with Snapchat+, which is now up to 15 million subscribers. Snap's audience nous, combined with its largely affluent user base, makes this a prime opportunity for the app, and it'll be interesting to see just how popular AR add-ons will be, and whether more users will be willing to pay extra for such. Snap says that users can subscribe to Lens+ by tapping their Bitmoji character on their profile, then tapping the Snapchat+ link. Snapchat adds a new subscription tier for Lenses

Snapchat has added a new layer to its paid offerings. The Lens+ subscription combines the existing Snapchat+ monthly plan with more access to "hundreds of Lenses and AR experiences that let you play, create, and share Snaps with friends in whole new ways." The plan will cost $9 a month. At the start, the subscription will feature Lenses made by the company or by select creators. New augmented reality experiences will be added each week. Creators will be granted the option to build and monetize Lenses for the program in the coming months, although Snapchat hasn't publicly explained how it will select the "select" participants. A representative from the business confirmed to TechCrunch that the launch of Lens+ will not see any Lenses that were previously free placed behind a paywall. The social media platform introduced the Snapchat+ paid option in 2022. According to the blog post announcing this extra option, the program has 15 million subscribers. The Lens program has been taking advantage of developments in AI. Already this year, the company debuted generative AI video Lenses for Premium subscribers and released a standalone app for any user to create their own effects. Snapchat's other AR project is Specs , a set of glasses that it expects to release next year.

Snapchat Shares New Trend Insights, and How Brands Can Tap Into Them

This story was originally published on Social Media Today. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Social Media Today newsletter. Snapchat has published a new 'Snapchat Generation' report, which looks at how Snapchatters are engaging in the app, and what that means for brand connection and promotions. The 26-page report provides a range of data-backed notes on what works on Snap, and what doesn't, and how people are looking to connect, with each other and brands, in the app. As per Snap: 'At Snapchat, we don't just reach the next generation, we understand them. Our audience of over 900 million monthly active users is one of the world's most engaged, expressive, and influential communities. Made up of Gen Z and Millennials, the Snapchat Generation is where real relationships, self-expression, and cultural influence converge.' The report looks at a range of key trends, as identified via Snap usage data, which Snapchat says reflect the interests and behaviors of its audience. First off, Snap highlights 'lo-fi' as a key trend: 'Raw, unfiltered formats win attention. Use Organic Profiles to publish off-the-cuff content and embrace 'imperfect' AR for nostalgic, low-stakes fun.' Snap's made this point in several of its reports, that less-polished, more intimate content works better on Snap, which is all about facilitating connection, as opposed to 'other' social apps. Indeed, back in 2022, Snapchat published a report which showed that people feel free to 'express their authentic selves' in the app, because they're generally communicating with their closest friends and family in the app. That's also worth noting for all marketers as well, that the polished, edited, curated approach doesn't resonate as well with this audience. Snap also says that audio elements are helping users enhance their connection in the app, with Snapchatters in the US sending over 2.5 billion voice notes in Q1 of 2025. Snap also notes that its users are looking for real, in-the-moment connection, while self-expression is also more of a focus, with spontaneous, visual communication styles resonating with users. (Did you first read that as 880 billion cats?) Finally, Snapchat notes that its top creators 'show up like real Snapchatters' in the app: '[Creators] share who they are, how they feel, and what's on their mind, and that's why their content builds real connection with a community that supports them, engages with them, and feels more like friends than followers.' And they're active too. Snap says its most active Snap Stars post nearly 140 times per day on average, and it's that presence and openness which resonates. Snap advises that brands looking to establish creator connections should consider this element, and look to learn what their audience responds to, and who, in order to make a more informed choice on partnerships. There are also handy explainers in each section on how brands can put them into effect: These are some valuable notes, which could help you formulate a more effective Snap marketing approach, incorporating key engagement strategies and trends into your outreach. It can be a difficult platform to crack, but by taking the time to learn what works, there are opportunities to reach big, engaged audiences in the app. You can download Snap's latest 'Snapchat Generation' report (with email sign-up) here.
