Hong Kong will be featured in an international investment and trade event in Chongqing this week, as the two cities eye deeper collaboration in finance and modern services.
The SAR has been invited to be a guest city for the first time at the Western China International Fair for Investment and Trade (WCIFIT), an annual event promoting global and domestic trade in the western part of the country
The 7th edition of the fair will be held between May 22-25.
At a press briefing on Monday, Zhang Yongwu, director of the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Commerce, said a 600 square metre pavilion featuring Hong Kong will be set up to showcase the SAR's financial, shipping and technological innovation progress.
He added that remarkable achievements have been made since the two places established the "Chongqing-Hong Kong Cooperation Mechanism" two years ago to promote cooperation in 11 fields, including construction under the Belt and Road Initiative.
"The governments of both sides attach great importance to the mechanism, and all sectors from the society are also actively participating in collaborations. Under the framework, remarkable achievements have been made, covering fields including economic and trade investments, finance, science and technology, logistics, cultural tourism, and legal dispute resolution," Zhang told reporters.
"For instance, in the field of economic and trade investment, Hong Kong has now become the largest source of foreign investment for Chongqing and is also the second largest trading partner of Chongqing," he said.
He said the two cities will jointly hold a series of economic and trade-related events at the fair, including one on the modern services industry, adding that over 20 financial figures from the SAR will visit the municipality to discuss cooperation potential.
Some 1,000 enterprises from 39 countries and regions as well as over 20 domestic provinces and cities are set to take part in WCIFIT this year.
Meanwhile, Chongqing mayor Hu Henghua said at the same press briefing that the south-western metropolis is keen to join hands with other mainland cities and provinces to explore overseas markets and develop green trade.
"At present, a very important breakthrough made in Chongqing is the green-related trade that's featured by industries such as the new energy vehicles," he said.
"For instance, when we are talking about the intelligent, internet-connected new energy vehicles, we have established a complete vehicle system, driven by leading enterprises such as Chang'an Automobile and Seres Automobile.
"Last year, our export of electric vehicles increased by 96.5 percent and momentum has continued this year," he added.
Noting its local gross domestic product exceeded 3.2 trillion yuan last year, Hu said the municipality is confident of reaching an annual growth target of around six percent this year, as it strives to boost the Yangtze River Economic Belt.

All eight metals warehouses in operation: FS

All eight metals warehouses in operation: FS Paul Chan says the government has established a task force to review issues related to gold and financial trade. File photo: RTHK Financial Secretary Paul Chan on Sunday said all eight warehouses that have been approved by the London Metal Exchange (LME) to store metals and issue trade documents are in operation. The idea was first floated in the Chief Executive's Policy Address last year. Writing on his official blog, Chan noted that work is now underway to create a 'commodity trading ecosystem' in the SAR. One of the most significant milestones, the financial chief added, is joining the LME's global warehouse network in January -- further connecting the country with the world's most active metals trading market. 'The establishment of LME-approved warehouses in Hong Kong has improved the efficiency of non-ferrous metal allocation, reduced logistics time and cost, and ensure a stable supply of critical metal resources in the region,' he said. 'This highlights Hong Kong's advantages as an international free port under the One Country, Two Systems principle, including zero-tariff, efficient and smooth customs clearance and globally accessible logistics network.' In the longer term, Hong Kong will be in a better position to carry out commodity transactions settled in renminbi, he added. Chan also said that as of early August, the SAR's LME-approved warehouses have attracted 8,000 tons of metals stored in the form of warrants. Warrants are title documents which allow ownership transfer without the metal physically moving out of the warehouse. The minister pointed out that the government has established a task force to review issues related to gold and financial trade, with details to be announced within this year.

Govt turns screws on water supplier to its offices

Govt turns screws on water supplier to its offices The Government Logistics Department says it is 'not satisfied that XDX would still be capable of performing the contract' of supplying government offices on Hong Kong Island and parts of the outlying islands. File photo: RTHK The Government Logistics Department on Saturday "partially terminated" a contract for the supply of bottled drinking water to government offices on Hong Kong Island and parts of the outlying islands. The contract with Xin Ding Xin (XDX) Trade, which started in June, was originally due to expire three years later. In a statement, the department said it had earlier conducted a test of bottled drinking water samples in government offices, which confirmed that the bottled drinking water from all suppliers complied with the safety standards for bottled drinking water. But it also said it was "not satisfied that XDX would still be capable of performing the contract" upon receiving information about the company's business operation and will therefore "follow up seriously and take action including whether to terminate the contract". From next week, bottled water in the area will be supplied by AS Watson Group that provides water branded as "Cool", which the company currently supplies to government offices in Kowloon. The department added that it has referred the case to police for investigation. The department conducted an open tender in March this year to select suitable suppliers of bottled drinking water for government departments. Professional Trade International won the tender to supply drinking water to the New Territories and part of Lantau.
