'If you really wanted to score a century…': What Ben Stokes told Ravindra Jadeja as England 'make a mockery of the game'
It was a shame that a competitive 4th Test of the series for the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy had to finish on a sour note. Both teams agreed to a draw after Jadeja and Sundar smashed centuries, but the damage was already done. What made things even more unsportsmanlike was that Stokes ensured his part-time bowlers Joe Root and Harry Brook sent down dollies to gift runs to Jadeja and Sundar to complete their respective milestones. They didn't applaud, and if anything, as Sanjay Manjrekar said on commentary, 'England were grumpy'. In the end, it was nothing more than frustration by a team that is used to dominating.
The drama began when Stokes approached Jadeja to shake hands, hoping that his Indian all-rounder compatriot would agree. That didn't happen, and it ticked off Stokes. When the umpires were not in favour of it either, Stokes was unimpressed and engaged in a verbal exchange with Jadeja. It was basically two men against an entire team as the entire England team started firing verbal shots at Sundar and Jadeja.
There was more drama
Jadeja remained unperturbed as the drama unfolded. Even Shubman Gill was disgusted as he watched from the change room. When the broadcast replayed the footage, it became clearer what Stokes told Jadeja: "You want to score a Test century against Harry Brook?" When Jadeja replied, " It's not in my hands," Zak Crawley interfered, saying, "Then shake hands. It's embarrassing."
The stump mic also captured Stokes telling Jadeja, "If you wanted to score a century, you should have batted like you wanted to get it."
Manjrekar aptly summed up England's cheap tactics. "Now they are just making a mockery of the game."
Truly disgusting.

Sourav Ganguly Offers Advise To Gautam Gambhir: 'Pick The Right Attack, Play...'
Last Updated: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly advised head coach Gautam Gambhir to play spinner Kuldeep Yadav in the final Test against England at The Oval. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly advised head coach Gautam Gambhir to play spinner Kuldeep Yadav in the fifth and final Test of the series against England at The Oval. India's determined fightback in the fourth Test at Old Trafford secured a draw for the visitors on the final day. With England leading the five-match series 2-1, the former India captain is confident that the visiting team can win the series finale by choosing the 'right bowling attack" and maintaining their batting momentum. 'I advise Gambhir to play Kuldeep Yadav in the fifth Test and pick the right bowling attack. If we continue to bat like this, we can win at The Oval," Ganguly told IANS. Reflecting on India's batting performance in Manchester, Ganguly noted that after such an outstanding display, the team must be contemplating their Lord's result, where they lost by 22 runs chasing a modest target of 193. 'This is a young team, we have to give them some time as the team is rebuilding. The way they batted in the fourth innings yesterday, scoring more than 400 runs, India will feel bad that they lost the Lord's Test. They batted very well on the fifth day in Manchester; the 190 should have been achieved at Lord's," the former left-handed batter said. 'After a long time, many Indian batters have scored significant runs in an overseas Test series. This is something that pleases me and is a positive sign for Indian cricket. These young players will represent the country for a long time, and their performances in England will surely boost their confidence. If we improve our bowling, we can win at The Oval," Ganguly added. The veteran cricketer further praised wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant for his consistent performance on the tour. Pant, who sustained a right foot fracture in the fourth Test, has been ruled out of the final Test of the series. 'He is a very good Test player. He is injured, and his foot was fractured; he will take time to recover. He has batted brilliantly in the series," Ganguly said of Pant. 'India played good cricket and saved the Test match after batting for more than 140 overs. Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar played very well," the southpaw added. The fifth and final Test of the series will be played at The Oval in London starting Thursday. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Divya Deshmukh Beats Koneru Humpy To Win FIDE Women's Chess World Cup
Teenaged Indian chess player Divya Deshmukh earned the biggest success of her career by clinching the FIDE Women's World Cup with a tie-break win over compatriot and more experienced Koneru Humpy here on Monday. The victory not just earned the 19-year-old the prestigious title, but also made her a Grandmaster, something which looked improbable when she started the tournament. She is only the fourth woman from India to become a Grandmaster, and the 88th overall. The victory for the Nagpur player came after the two classical games played on Saturday and Sunday ended in draws. In the time-controlled tie-breaker on Monday, Divya, playing with white, was again held to a draw. But in the reverse game, where she had black pieces, she managed to overcome the two-time world rapid champion 2.5-1.5. The victory has come at a time when India is riding a wave of success in men's chess, with the likes of world champion D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi producing good results consistently. Deshmukh joins Humpy, Dronavalli Harika and R Vaishali in the list of women who became Grandmasters in the country. By virtue of making it to the Women's World Cup final, Deshmukh also secured a spot in next year's Candidates tournament, which will decide who will take on world champion Ju Wenjun of China in the Women's World Championship. An emotional Deshmukh couldn't hold back her tears following the victory against an opponent twice her age, who fought till the last before losing to the determined youngster. "I need time to process it (win). I think it was fate, me getting the Grandmaster title this way because before this (tournament) I didn't even have one (GM) norm, and now I am the Grandmaster," said Divya. PTI AM PM AM PM PM
