Plenty more to come from Tonge, insists skipper Lord

Yahoo24-05-2025

Tonge have started the new season with a bang - but captain Connor Lord believes there is more to come from his side as they challenge towards the top of the Premiership table in the Anthony Axford North West Cricket League.
Tonge won a local derby away at Eagley last Saturday by 68 runs, their third win from four so far.
Sri Lankan professional Hashan Dumindu stood out with 88 not out in 205-8 before he took the new ball and claimed three wickets with his off-spin in Eagley's 137-9.
All-rounder Alex Rodzoch, who returned to the club over the winter from Farnworth, struck four times against an Eagley side who are bottom of the table with one win in four so far in 2025.
Lord's Tonge (30 points) now sit fourth in the top-flight table, 14 points adrift of leaders Read.
'It was a very good win,' said seamer Lord.
'I think we make it hard for ourselves sometimes away at Eagley. We've had a couple of wins here and there, but last year I think it was second to last game and we couldn't chase 70 or 80-odd against them.
'So it was a big win for us against a local rival, but on the other hand there's also parts of our game as a team and individually that we need to improve on even though we're picking up wins.'
One of those areas Lord pinpointed was their fielding, while you look at Saturday and see that from 101-2 in the 27th over, they only posted 205-8. And that came after they were 146-8.
However, they are winning matches, which is the most important thing.
'If you're struggling in certain areas and losing, you end up scratching around,' continued the skipper, who claimed one wicket on Saturday.
'But if you're picking up wins and you still know where you need to improve as a team, then it's something you can jobs" target="_blank">work on from a position of strength.'
Lord described the return of Rodzoch to Castle Hill as 'massive', and it's good to see the club thriving again after a difficult period approximately a decade ago when they were struggling at the foot of the Bolton League.
'Obviously, on the pitch and off the pitch, with his experience, he's brilliant for us,' said the skipper. 'We want Alex to get us runs at the top order, which he has done in a few of the games, and he's very handy with the ball as well.
'Over the last eight-10 years, we've strengthened the club back up, and we've sort of built on it each year as well.
'Keeping Hashan with us has been a big thing. It's his fourth season with us. Getting Justin (Gilliland, South African overseas amateur) back this year, too. They're two really, really good lads as well as very good cricketers.
'But all of the lads want to play for this club.
'Anyone who's doing well gets interest from other clubs, but they 100 per cent want to play for Tonge.'
So what about aims for 2025? Is a top-four position where Lord and Tonge expected to be at this stage before a ball was bowled back in mid-April?
'Last year, we finished sixth and fell off a bit towards the end,' added Lord.
'So I think the next step for us would be to push for that top four, which would guarantee us a spot in the Lancs Knockout.
'But we're just going to take it a game at a time and try and improve on the things that we didn't do great each week and hopefully keep picking up enough wins to get us there.'
Today's fixtures: Premiership - Blackrod v Atherton, Farnworth v Eagley, Little Lever v Farnworth Social Circle, Lostock v Padiham, Read v Kearsley, Tonge v Salesbury; Championship - Baxenden v Astley Bridge, Brinscall v Earby, Cherry Tree v Oswaldtwistle Immanuel, Ribblesdale Wanderers v Barnoldswick, Walkden v Whalley.

Captain Bavuma, centurion Markram push Proteas to brink of World Test Championship glory

SA need just 69 more runs to defeat Australia in the World Test Championship final at Lord's. Aiden Markram's unbeaten century (102*) and captain Temba Bavuma's 65* have transformed the match after Australia set a daunting target. The pair's unbroken 143-run partnership is the highest of the match, giving the Proteas a strong for a win. Aiden Markram scored an unbeaten century as South Africa edged tantalisingly close to an unexpected success in the World Test Championship final, needing 69 runs to dethrone Australia after reaching 213-2 at stumps on the third day at Lord's on Friday. It was a dramatic turnaround in a gripping contest where Australia set their opponents a daunting 282-run chase, but South Africa made full use of an increasingly benign wicket to chip away at the target. Markram, on 102, and captain Temba Bavuma, 65 not out, will return on Saturday and look to wrap up victory after putting together the highest partnership of the match (143 not out) in pursuit of the joint second-highest winning total in Test history at Lord's. Markram, who had failed to reach three figures in his previous 16 Test innings, knocked the ball to all corners and was more than ably backed up by Bavuma, whose runs came despite a hamstring strain that hampered his running between the wickets. Australia will be regretting dropping him when he was on two, not only for the runs he went on to score but the fact that slip fielder Steve Smith suffered a compound dislocation of his little finger as he spilled the catch. Fortunes in the contest fluctuated through a furious opening two days, dominated by the bowlers with 24 wickets falling, but the wicket flattened on Friday and there were only four wickets taken. The Aussies resumed on 144-8 with a 218-run lead overnight and modest ambitions of adding 20 to 30 runs more in the morning. However, an unbeaten 58 from Mitchell Starc saw them bat for two hours until lunch to the frustration of South Africa before eventually being dismissed for 207 in their second innings. Nathan Lyon was dismissed in the third over of the day, trapped leg before wicket by Kagiso Rabada, but Starc and Josh Hazlewood put on a 59-run last wicket partnership before part-time bowler Markram finally dismissed Hazlewood for 17. South Africa came out to bat after lunch and saw Ryan Rickelton out for six runs as a full delivery from Starc, angling away from the left-hander, hit the toe of Rickelton's bat and flew up for a diving catch from wicketkeeper Alex Carey. Wiaan Mulder made a lively 27 before spooning the ball to cover where Marnus Labuschagne had an easy catch off Starc for the only other wicket to fall before Markram and Bavuma settled in for more than a session to offer their country hope of what had appeared an unlikely triumph.

How Jim Harbaugh's text exchange with Jason Sudeikis inspired ‘Ted Lasso' gameday attire

Among the ways to describe Jim Harbaugh: Los Angeles Chargers coach, championship-winning college football coach, passionate, quirky, Michigan Man. And now … gameday fashion expert? Four years ago, actor and 'Ted Lasso' star Jason Sudeikis revealed on 'Late Night With Seth Meyers' that he confided in Harbaugh to craft his character's gameday wardrobe. At the time, Sudeikis mentioned Harbaugh told him he keeps it simple: khakis and a sweatshirt. But it turns out Harbaugh's response was plenty more detailed than that. Advertisement This week, Sudeikis revisited that text exchange with Harbaugh in an appearance at the Men in Blazers' 'One Year To Glory' event earlier this week, which signaled the one-year countdown to the 2026 World Cup. Sudeikis said he and Harbaugh texted on Sept. 4, 2019, when 'Ted Lasso' filming was beginning. 'Writing you from jolly old England … as we're in the middle of filming episode two of that 'Ted Lasso' show I'm doing for Apple, so far so good, I think,' Sudieikis wrote in the text with a shrug emoji before asking Harbaugh his routine for gameday attire. What does he wear to and from the stadium? And for post-game interviews? 'I wear the same clothes every day, khakis and a blue sweatshirt,' Harbaugh's response began. 'Will wear the same thing to post interviews and then home as well. No shower unless it's really hot or really cold outside or raining. In that case, our equipment manager has a duplicate pair of everything I wear in my locker, so I put that on to wear back on the plane or home. And always a new pair of socks and different underwear. There's always a locker with extra layers for cold games, plus long johns. That's the routine for road games and home games. I pack a playbook, call sheet, one extra underwear, one extra pair of socks and a toothbrush. Wear the rest of what I need. 'As I like to say, I pack a toothbrush and a great attitude.' Harbaugh continued by describing how other coaches might pack a bag and perhaps change from a suit to coaching gear once they get to the stadium. Some keep their coaching gear on after, others change clothes 'I don't see the point in getting all dressed up to ride the bus or walk into a stadium, but most coaches, many pro players want to look sharp for the brief camera shot coming off the bus and into the stadium,' Harbaugh wrote. 'Hope that helps, more than happy to do so.' Jason Sudeikis reads his full text exchange with NFL coach Jim Harbaugh on proper coaching attire. A tale of khakis, toothbrushes, extra underwear and emojis 🤷🏻‍♂️✌️🩲 — Men in Blazers (@MenInBlazers) June 12, 2025 Might as well add 'detail oriented' to Harbaugh's signature qualities. Harbaugh, who also appeared at the Los Angeles event, later discussed how the coaching mentality of Ted Lasso in the series reminded him of the way his father, Jack Harbaugh, approached the profession. Jack was the head coach of Western Michigan from 1982-86 and Western Kentucky from 1989-2002, leading the Hilltoppers to the 2002 Division I-AA Football Championship title. In 2023, he came out of retirement to work as an assistant coach with Jim's Michigan Wolverines, which won the College Football Playoff championship that year. Advertisement '(Ted Lasso) said one time … he judges success not by wins and losses but by making the fellas the best version of themselves on and off the field. That one really stuck,' Jim Harbaugh said. 'I want to be that kind of coach, that kind of leader which encourages rather than discourages. When you really think about it, when you're encouraging somebody, you're giving them confidence and you're giving them courage, which is far better than discouraging them, which leads them to be less courageous and less confident.' The Emmy Award-winning 'Ted Lasso' is a comedy series that follows an American soccer coach at a fictional English Premier League club, AFC Richmond. The show will return for a fourth season with Lasso coaching a women's team, as Sudeikis explained on an episode of the 'New Heights' podcast, hosted by Jason and Travis Kelce. The release date for the fourth season has not been announced. (Photo of Jim Harbaugh: Kirby Lee / Imagn Images)

Although he went on to miss the cut in 2016, the American world No 1 is back as a heavy favourite to win back-to-back major titles following his US PGA Championship triumph. The Red Bull driver has won for the past three years in Montreal, the last time after starting alongside Mercedes's pole-sitter, George Russell – the same rival he clashed with two weekends ago – in a qualifying draw. How Verstappen will respond is an open question but others are sure to want to take whatever advantage they can of the situation at a circuit famed also for changeable weather. Thirty-two teams take part, with the matches staged across 11 cities in the United States, the month-long event involves the English clubs Chelsea and Manchester City. Inter Miami's involvement rests on their winning the MLS Supporters' Shield for the best performance in the regular season, even though LA Galaxy went on to win the actual MLS playoffs and were left out. That meant organisers could shoe-horn in the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi as well as Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. Barney Ronay reports from the Hard Rock Stadium. 5pm Advertisement England v Slovenia live European Under-21 Championship Lee Carsley is confident there is more to come from his young squad after the holders opened their campaign with a 3-1 win over the Czech Republic. They next face Slovenia in Nitra, before their last group fixture against Germany. 'I definitely expect us to keep improving, the longer we can stay in the tournament,' says Carsley, who had seen his side fail to pick up victories in their last two warm-up matches against the Netherlands and Spain, alongside a 5-3 defeat by France in March. Rob Smyth helms our minute-by-minute coverage. 6pm US Open final round live Advertisement Golf Scott Murray returns to provide expert commentary on the closing stages at Oakmont where many of the big names have struggled. The tournament will come to the boil at a venue with a history of dramatic finishes, including Dustin Johnson's fraught finale in 2016, Ernie Els's three-way tussle in 1994 and Johnny Miller's barnstorming surge to victory in 1973.
