European car market tumbles 7% in June

PARIS: Europe's new car market saw a sharp seven-percent year-on-year drop in June, with top economies Germany, France and Italy posting especially steep declines, according to automobile manufacturers' figures published on Thursday.
The continent's car industry has laboured under an uncertain global economic outlook overshadowed by US President Donald Trump's threats of tariffs, as well as stiff competition from China, notably on the key electric vehicles market.
According to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), European sales dipped two-percent in the first half of 2025, with petrol and diesel models posting sharp 21 and 28 percent declines respectively.
Hybrid models have caught up to fill in the gap, with sales rising 17 percent and the sector now representing more than a third of the market.
Fully electric vehicles, seen as essential to the world's transition to a low-carbon economy in an age of man-made climate change, likewise saw sales rise, albeit at a more modest 22 percent compared to the massive expansions of previous years.
Despite government subsidies to encourage more people to drive electric, such "EVs" only represent under 16 percent of the European market.
"We are still far from reaching mass adoption," said the ACEA, which represents the continent's 16 major car, truck, van and bus makers.
"Consumers clearly remain cautious, and more robust demand measures will remain a crucial element to get the transition up to speed," said the ACEA, which wants CO2 emission standards to be revised.
Hinting at the looming threat of US tariffs, the ACEA said: "What is very also concerning for manufacturers is the notable drop in new registrations at a time when we already face an increasingly unpredictable trade environment and other threats to competitiveness."
Jeep maker Stellantis suffered the worst June decline, with Europe's number two carmaker selling 30,000 fewer cars, or a 16 percent fall. Its Fiat and Citroen lines were worst-affected, with both brands in the middle of a shake-up to their models on offer.
Top producer Volkswagen saw an around average eight-percent decline, while podium-placed Renault saw just a half-percent drop.
Both Japan's Toyota and South Korea's Hyundai-Kia also saw around 10,000 fewer sales in June, with their market shares declining in the first half of the year.

A joint statement by ten Central Trade Unions (CTUs) and the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Monday (August 4, 2025) has demanded a parliamentary review of the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) signed recently with the United Kingdom. The organisations asked the Union government to reject United States President Donald Trump's 'tariff threats' and assert India's sovereign right to trade with all nations, including Russia. The statement said the India-U.K. CETA must be reviewed and altered immediately, with no ratification in Parliament. 'All negotiations for a U.S.-India trade deal must be halted to prevent further corporate exploitation. No more secret trade agreements — all future deals must undergo full parliamentary scrutiny and public consultation,' the joint statement added. The organisations said East India Company colonised India through trade and today, CETA and U.S. trade deals are the new instruments of corporate imperialism. 'On August 13, farmers and workers will rise in defence of sovereignty and freedom, sending a clear message: We will not let history repeat! Quit India, again,' the statement added. Economic coercion by U.S. Terming the U.S. import tariffs on India as a blatant act of economic coercion, the trade unions and farmers' outfits said the new duties are aimed at dictating India including its trade relations with Russia. 'These aggressive measures expose the hypocrisy of U.S. trade policies, which demand open markets for American corporations while weaponising tariffs to bully sovereign nations,' they said. Alleging that the Centre has surrendered to these threats, the SKM and CTUs said it was further evident in the recently signed CETA, which according to them is a deal that sacrifices the interests of India's farmers, workers, and economic independence at the altar of foreign corporate profits. Compromising India's strategic autonomy 'Instead of firmly rejecting this intimidation, the Central government has responded with silence, signalling its willingness to compromise India's strategic autonomy in favour of U.S.A. This capitulation paves the way for an even more exploitative India-U.S. trade deal, which would grant American agribusiness corporations like Cargill unrestricted access to India's dairy sector, agriculture, resulting in collapsing prices and destroying the farming community along with endangering food security of the nation. It would also trigger de-industrialisation in India and skyrocketing unemployment,' the statement said.

(Bloomberg) -- German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil plans to bring up the issue of quotas for European steel when he meets with his US counterpart Scott Bessent. 'It's precisely in the steel industry where there are indications that there could be a quota system — exceptions on both sides of the Atlantic,' Klingbeil told reporters in Washington on Monday. 'This would be important for the German steel industry and for many jobs in Germany, and it's one of the topics I will address today.' A US-European trade deal agreed last month will raise duties on most imports from the bloc to 15%. Brussels got a partial waiver on certain industry-specific US tariffs that carry higher rates worldwide – like for automobiles – but not on others like steel and aluminum, where talks on an exemption involving quotas continue. 'I think we were too weak, we cannot be satisfied with the result that was achieved,' said Klingbeil. 'We Europeans must become stronger, focus on the internal market, and ensure that we are force to be reckoned with. Still, he added that an agreement does mean that the uncertainties of recent months have been removed, and that there is now planning security for companies on both sides of the Atlantic.
