A desperate search is underway in Texas for a 10-year-old girl who was "swept away by rapidly rising floodwaters," officials said.
The student was last seen around 4:25 p.m. on Monday in Brenham, a city located halfway between Austin and Houston, according to the Brenham Fire Department.
The agency said "Search operations continued through the night, utilizing land-based crews, drones with thermal imaging technology, and canine units."
"We remain deeply committed to finding this child and bringing her home. We ask the community to continue praying for the child, her family, and all the first responders," it added.

The Brenham Independent School District said Tuesday that it is "deeply grateful for the continued efforts of local law enforcement, fire, EMS, specialized rescue teams, and the many community members who have offered their support" in the search for the missing student.

"Yesterday, during the severe weather that impacted our area, a student from Brenham Elementary was caught in floodwaters and is currently missing," the district continued.

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCT) — Attorney General Jeff Jackson won a court order blocking AmeriCorps from unlawfully ending job and recovery grants in Western North Carolina. According to a press release, 'On April 15, AmeriCorps ordered more than 50 full-time volunteers to stop working on Helene recovery in western North Carolina, as part of terminating more than 750 volunteers working nationwide for the National Civilian Community Corps. On April 25, North Carolina was notified that AmeriCorps would immediately stop funding 10 volunteer organizations funded through the NC Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, including several serving hard-hit communities in western North Carolina. On April 29, Attorney General Jackson joined a coalition of 23 other attorneys general suing AmeriCorps for not administering grants that Congress had already appropriated.' On Thursday, June 5th, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland granted a preliminary injunction and restored all programs that had been terminated in N.C. while the case continues. 'A federal judge found that the actions were unlawful because Congress explicitly required that the agency provide advance notice and an opportunity to comment on an any major changes to AmeriCorps services.' 'Western North Carolina will get the funds it needs so AmeriCorps members can keep helping people, keep cleaning up after Helene, and rebuild their homes and neighborhoods,' said Attorney General Jeff Jackson. Months-old footage shows flooding in Florida, not Thailand after heavy rain
"Flooding around (Victory Monument) in Thailand at 3:15pm today. Myanmar citizens beware," reads the Burmese-language caption of a Facebook video shared on May 27, 2025. Superimposed Burmese-language text on the video -- which shows partially submerged houses and buildings in an area inundated with water -- reads, "Flooding in Thailand. Those who are close to the sea, please be careful". The video circulated online days after Thai media reported that a combination of heavy rain and slow water drainage had flooded parts of Bangkok (archived here and here). The footage was also shared in similar Burmese posts on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. But the clip is old and was not filmed in Bangkok. A reverse image search on Google using keyframes from the falsely shared video led to an identical clip published on Instagram on October 9, 2024 (archived link). Its caption reads: "Fort Myers Beach, halfway down Estero island @ 5:30pm on Oct 9. Milton was about double the flooding from Helene for FMB." Category 3 storm Hurricane Milton made landfall on Florida's Gulf Coast on October 9, 2024, pounding communities still reeling from the effects of Hurricane Helene two weeks earlier. At least 16 people died as Milton sent tornadoes spinning across Florida and left millions of buildings without power (archived link). ‘Once a Crawdad, always a Crawdad': Hickory Crawdads to honor victim of Catawba Co. mass shooting
HICKORY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – One person is still in the hospital after a deadly Catawba County mass shooting early Sunday morning. The FBI is asking for the public's help to get any video in the surrounding area that could help them in the investigation. We're learning more about the man who died on Sunday, Shawn Patrick Hood. According to the Hickory Crawdads archives, he was a bullpen catcher in the late 90's. Douglas Locascio met with Queen City News to dig up old team books and helped us to find a picture of Hood with the team. 'Not a lot of people want to catch a 90 to 100 mile per hour fastball coming at them,' Locascio said. 'It's definitely a well needed position.' Locascio said Hood helped warm up pitchers before they entered the game. He checked in with then General Manger David Haas. He said Haas was the person who found and hired him to help the team. 'Just such a likeable guy, someone who truly had a love and passion for the game of baseball who just enjoyed being around the guys,' Locascio said. 'He probably potentially saw it taking his career to the next step and maybe one day getting in the majors and being a bullpen catcher there or something like that but just had a love and passion for the game of baseball and wanted to be surrounded by it.' Locascio said he was unpaid, but because the team loved him so much, he got his own baseball card. 'You can tell how much the team and the club and the organization appreciated him,' Locascio said. It's been more than 60 hours since the events transpired at Walnut Acres, and we still don't know why Hood was there when gunfire rang out. His colleagues at Mountain BizWorks sent us a statement saying they are sad to learn of his untimely passing. 'In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Shawn demonstrated an unwavering commitment to his community, directing millions of dollars in recovery funds to support and stabilize small businesses throughout Western North Carolina. He brought a profound passion to his work, and his many contributions will have a lasting impact. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time, and we remain deeply grateful for the enduring legacy of service he leaves behind.'
