Barnama23-06-2025
MIRI, June 23 (Bernama) -- The Ruang Daya Cipta (RDC), an initiative to empower science, technology and innovation (STI) within the community by Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia (YIM), an agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), was launched here today.
The inauguration ceremony was officiated by the Deputy Science, Technology, and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohammad Yusof Apdal, at an event attended by stakeholders, strategic partners, academics and the local community.
According to YIM's statement today, the Miri RDC was developed as a result of strategic cooperation between the federal government and the Sarawak government, with YIM as the main implementing agency responsible for providing facilities, training and STI-related programmes.
"The RDC serves as a community platform that provides access to facilities, equipment and training related to the STI field. Through the RDC, the local community has the opportunity to develop their creative potential and create relevant and sustainable innovative solutions," the statement said.
So far, a total of 23 RDCs have been established nationwide, including four each in Sabah and Johor; two each in Sarawak, Pahang, Kelantan, Selangor and Perak; and one each in Negeri Sembilan, Terengganu, Kedah, Kuala Lumpur and Melaka.
The Miri RDC, which was completed in October 2023, is located at the Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Miri, and is equipped with facilities such as computers, 3D printers, and a digital studio to support the development of technological skills and creativity within the community.
Through a social innovation approach, the RDC provides direct access to technology and training, thereby enabling rural communities like those in Miri to participate in and benefit from opportunities in the digital economy.
"The establishment of this facility is also in line with the implementation of the MOSTI Social Innovation Policy (DIS) which emphasises the creation of an inclusive STI ecosystem that directly benefits the community, especially at the grassroots level," the statement said.
The RDC also supports Core 2 of DIS, which focuses on the cultivation and empowerment of creativity, as well as Core 4, which emphasises the development of integrated social innovation infrastructure at the grassroots level.

Malaysia, ASEAN Members Work Closely To Advance Safe, Regulated Nuclear Technology

JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 14 (Bernama) – Malaysia has been working closely with ASEAN member countries to strengthen regional cooperation to ensure the safe, secure, and regulated use of nuclear technology in the region. Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Mohammad Yusof Apdal said various initiatives, including capacity-building programmes, technical exchanges, and strategic collaborations, have strengthened regional preparedness and resilience against emerging challenges. 'None of these achievements would have been possible without your (ASEAN members') longstanding support and collaboration,' he said in his speech at the closing ceremony of the 12th Annual Meeting of ASEAN Network of Regulatory Bodies on Atomic Energy (ASEANTOM) here today. Also present were Atom Malaysia director-general Noraishah Pungut and Philippine Nuclear Research Institute director Dr Carlo Abundo Arcilla. Mohammad Yusof said Malaysia, as the Chair of ASEANTOM this year, remains fully committed to ASEANTOM's shared goals and will continue to contribute actively as a dedicated member. He said this is in line with the official theme for Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', under which Malaysia will ensure that no one is left behind and that every ASEAN citizen benefits from the region's progress and sustainability. 'While promoting development that safeguards our environment and ensures long-term prosperity for generations to come, may our continued collaboration also pave the way for a safer, more innovative, and sustainable future for all,' he said. Mohammad Yusof also stressed that the spirit of unity, trust, and cooperation that defines ASEAN and the ASEANTOM must continue so that the peace and prosperity of the region can be maintained. Earlier, at the closing ceremony of the meeting, Malaysia officially handed over the chairmanship of ASEANTOM to the Philippines, marking the end of its term as chair.

Malaysia steps up investment in R&D in quest to become high-tech nation by 2030

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is expanding its investment in research and development (R&D) as part of its push to become a high-technology nation by 2030, said Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohammad Yusof Apdal. He highlighted that Malaysia's gross expenditure on R&D (GERD) reached 1.01% of gross domestic product in 2022, a notable increase, with more than 51% contributed by the industry sector. 'Looking ahead, we are targeting GERD to reach 2.5% by 2030, in line with our national goal of transforming into a high-technology nation,' Mohammad Yusof said in his speech at the soft launch of the Asean Technology Cooperation and Development Summit 2025 today. He said the mission of the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (Mosti) is anchored in a vision to transform Malaysia from a technology user into a technology developer with global market capabilities by 2030. 'We are committed to unlocking value through innovation that is commercially viable, socially inclusive, and globally relevant.' Mohammad Yusuf said the government is accelerating real-world innovation with the National Technology and Innovation Sandbox (NTIS), providing a platform for pre-commercial technologies to be tested and adapted at scale. 'Since its inception, NTIS has supported numerous innovative solutions, focusing on applications ranging from precision drones to AI diagnostics and renewable energy systems.' Additionally, Malaysia is investing in talent as an estimated 600,000 Malaysians will need to be reskilled over the next three to five years due to artificial intelligence and automation. 'Mosti is addressing this challenge through structured training pathways, academic-industry partnerships, and regional innovation exchanges.' Mohammad Yusof said that as chair of Asean, Malaysia is committed to leading efforts that drive regional integration and forward-looking cooperation. 'One of our key priorities is to accelerate innovation and technology-driven development – not only within our borders, but across the wider Asean community.' The soft launch was attended by the embassy of China's science and technology counsellor Dr Zhao Xiangdong and second secretary for science and technology Dr Zhang Tianhang. The Asean Technology Cooperation and Development Summit 2025, organised by Intrinsic SEA, will be held alongside WE2025: Future in Motion, a three-day programme from Nov 25 to 27 organised by Qube Integrated Malaysia Sdn Bhd.
