Ryan Blaney upsets Shane van Gisbergen for Watkins Glen pole
For the first time in his NASCAR Cup Series championship career, Blaney will lead the field to green in Sunday's Go Bowling at The Glen.
It was a dramatic effort for the driver of the No. 12 Team Penske Ford Mustang, knocking the reigning road course master, Trackhouse Racing's Shane van Gisbergen, from the top spot on the speed chart by a slight .33 seconds with a lap of 122.568 mph around the historic 2.45-mile road course in scenic upstate New York.
It was a markedly different day for the 31-year old North Carolinian Blaney, who endured a disappointing showing here a year ago when a poor qualifying effort left him in a vulnerable position. He was ultimately eliminated from the race on the opening lap.
Blaney acknowledged that beating the road-racing ace van Gisbergen on Sunday will be another story.
"Ninety laps is going to be a little harder to beat him tomorrow, but gotta start somewhere,'' the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series champion said with a smile. "It's more neat for me because we had an absolutely abysmal weekend here last year. ... We've worked really hard on where we need to get better here, where I need to do a better job. How can we improve our race cars. So it was like a big dual effort.
"Just proud of their dedication to get better at this place and improving the car from last year and I tried to work on a lot of things. I consider myself a pretty average road course racer and I've worked really hard on trying to get better, where can I improve my driving skills and styles and compete a little bit more at these places and it's neat when that all comes together.
"I try to take these things one day at a time. Tomorrow is a whole different task but it's nice to have done our job really well today and now about focusing on trying to make 90 good laps tomorrow.''
It is the 150th NASCAR Cup Series pole for Team Penske, making the storied organization only the fourth team in series history to eclipse that mark.
Blaney and van Gisbergen -- who has three road course wins on the season -- will lead the field to the green flag, followed by Joe Gibbs Racing's Chase Briscoe, van Gisbergen's Trackhouse teammate Ross Chastain, and Richard Childress Racing's Kyle Busch, who for much of the qualifying session looked to have had a front row start.
"That's not bad,'' said a smiling Busch, who won from pole position at Watkins Glen in 2008.
"Great job by everyone on this Chevrolet,'' he added. "Feels good to have a good solid effort like that right now.''
Defending Watkins Glen race winner Chris Buescher, of Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing, will roll off 12th in the No. 17 RFK Ford. He holds the 16th and final points position among the 16 drivers currently aiming for the Playoffs with three regular season races remaining.
His teammate Ryan Preece sits just 23 points behind him in the standings and will start 17th.
Their team co-owner Brad Keselowski, who also needs a victory in one of the remaining three regular-season races will start 16th. Keselowski has back-up drivers on standby for the next three weeks as his wife Paige is due to give birth to their fourth child. Road course ace Joey Hand is at Watkins Glen.
Championship points leader William Byron -- the 2023 Watkins Glen winner -- will roll off 10th. His teammate Chase Elliott, a two-time Watkins Glen winner who is 18 points behind Byron with three regular season races remaining, will start 20th.

Ex-ESPN host Sage Steele says her close friends publicly attacked her after she sued the sports network
Former ESPN host Sage Steele has opened up about the personal fallout she suffered after filing a lawsuit against the sporting giant in 2022. During an appearance on The Katie Miller Show, Steele said that she saw many of her closest friends turn on her publicly during the legal battle. 'That is literally still the hardest, saddest thing for me,' she said. 'They were in my home, with my children, with my family, with my parents, and for them to not just disappear ... that's one thing. It's another thing to attack [me] publicly, and that's just where I was so confused and shocked,' she explained. 'I'm an emotional person, so I cried a lot.' Steele said that she never wanted or expected her friends to defend her, but she never expected them to turn on her publicly either. Since parting ways with ESPN, Steele has come out as a proud supporter of President Donald Trump and was even part of his 2024 campaign. Her ESPN suspension came in part due to her comments about former President Barack Obama. During a podcast appearance with Jay Cutler, Steele stated she did not like Obama calling himself Black because, like herself, he has a white mother. Steele eventually left ESPN last year after settling a lawsuit against the company, claiming it censored her free speech. She later claimed during her time at ESPN that the network asked her not to talk about transgender swimmer Lia Thomas. Thomas represented the University of Pennsylvania as a male athlete before transitioning to compete as a woman. She went on to win a female national championship. Steele was among those who voiced their opposition on social media to Thomas and other biological males competing in women's sports. Steele also spoke out after ESPN fired her friend Sam Ponder last year. 'This is another loss for ESPN, but it is a gain for literally the rest of the world because now you're going to see the true Sam Ponder,' Steele said on social media at the time. Since parting ways with ESPN, Steele has carved out a niche for herself in conservative media. She hosts a conservative podcast on Bill Maher's network and has also worked with the Daily Wire. Steele was one of the first people that White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt invited to sit in the 'new media' seat in the White House briefing room, a seat near the front of the room that was previously reserved for staff. She asked Leavitt about how much the president would pressure the U.S. Senate to move on a a House-passed bill that bars transgender athletes from participating in women's sports. Her early February appearance in the briefing room was timed to coincide with Trump signing an executive order on the same topic. Steele has also formed a close friendship with Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and came to support her on Capitol Hill during the ex-congresswoman's Senate confirmation hearings. Steele was one of the first guests on Stephen Miller's wife Katie's new podcast, The Katie Miller Show. Miller, who has been married to Trump's Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller since 2020, launched the podcast this week with Vice President JD Vance as her first guest. Announcing the project, Miller said, 'For years, I've seen that there isn't a place for conservative women to gather online, and so I wanted to create that space.' Miller previously served as a spokesperson for the Department of Government Efficiency under Elon Musk before departing to start her podcast. The interview will air on Monday at 6pm ET. Athletics DFA Gio Urshela, recall Brett Harris from Triple-A
August 15 - The Athletics designated veteran infielder Gio Urshela for assignment prior to Friday night's game against the visiting Los Angeles Angels. The A's recalled third baseman Brett Harris from Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move. Urshela, 33, is batting .238 with 20 RBIs in 59 games this season, his first with the Athletics. The 10-year veteran has played with eight teams and has a .270 career average with 73 homers and 352 RBIs in 851 games. His best season was in 2019 when he established career highs of a .314 batting average, 21 homers and 74 RBIs with the New York Yankees. Harris, 27, was batting .282 with 12 homers and 39 RBIs in 59 games at Las Vegas this season. Harris played 36 games for the Athletics last season and struggled with the bat. He hit just .146 and slugged .262 in 36 games, hitting three homers and driving in 12 runs. The Athletics also claimed left-hander Jared Shuster off waivers from the Chicago White Sox. The club subsequently optioned Shuster to Las Vegas. Shuster, 27, had an 8.04 ERA in 12 games (two starts) for the White Sox this season. Overall, he is 6-8 with a 5.27 ERA in 62 appearances (17 starts) over three seasons with the Atlanta Braves (2023) and White Sox (2024-25). --Field Level Media
