Gemma McCaw Hopes To Reduce Barriers For Women With New Partnership

Scoop05-05-2025
From camping trips as a child to adventure racing through rugged terrain and spearheading her Ladies Who Venture group, Kiwi icon Gemma McCaw has always been deeply connected to the outdoors.
Gemma's journey is one of inspiration—a Black Sticks Olympian, a strong advocate for women's wellbeing, and now, a champion for empowering women to adventure outdoors and embrace the positive impact spending time in nature has on our lives.
That's why when New Zealand's most iconic outdoor brand, Kathmandu, reached out to Gemma to join forces, it was an easy yes.
'My goal is to break down barriers that prevent women from experiencing and embracing the outdoors,' Gemma says.
The mother of three knows first-hand how the right gear can help women to feel confident and empowered.
"As women, we're all at different ages and stages. I want outdoor experiences to be accessible to everyone, whatever is going on their lives. Whether it's your first hike or a multi-day trek, the key is feeling confident and comfortable."
Kathmandu and Gemma have a shared vision to inspire women to connect with the outdoors, embrace exploration, and overcome barriers that have held them back.
Kathmandu Chief Executive Megan Welch says partnering with Gemma felt natural.
"At Kathmandu, everything we do is purpose-led. We are in the business of improving the wellbeing of the world through the outdoors and clearly, so is Gemma, who is doing so much to help more women get outdoors. She embodies the values we champion: authenticity, courageousness, community, and the belief that getting out there changes our lives for the better.'
During the three-year partnership, Gemma will be actively involved in the design phase of Kathmandu's Outdoor Active range.
Gemma will get out there and test the products herself, provide practical advice, and give honest feedback to ensure the gear meets the needs of women outdoors.
"Getting outdoors looks different for everyone. It's all about pushing your own boundaries and embracing the challenge to take that first step into nature," Gemma says.
'Kathmandu's commitment to using responsible materials is so important to me, and I'm proud to be part of this. With their innovative designs, I can't wait to help shape gear that makes a difference to how women feel,' Gemma says.
Having led Ladies Who Venture, a group that guides women to tackle New Zealand's Great Walks in a single day, Gemma understands the importance of building confidence through education and practical advice.
Kathmandu's General Manager of Product Karinda Robinson says she is really looking forward to working with Gemma.
'We'll have Gemma working alongside us during the design process of the Outdoor Active range. While all Kathmandu product is made for performance, our goal is to design gear that supports women in all forms of outdoor adventure, both casual and technical.
'Every garment is robustly tested for quality, a standard practice for Kathmandu gear. We use some of the most sustainable materials available and we do not compromise on performance. Having Gemma directly involved in this will be invaluable, as we work to support more women getting out there.'

The MGS5 EV goes on sale with bonus prize for earlybirds

MG Motor New Zealand says its new MGS5 EV will go on sale this month, available with two battery sizes and in Excite and Essence spec variants. Price range from $44,990 to $54,990, all exclusive of ORCs. Those in early go home with a free wall charger. A driving range of up to 430km (WLTP) is evidently possible with the 62kWh battery. It is also available with a 49kWh pack (340km of range, WLTP). Both are of the LFP variety. MG says a 30 to 80 per cent recharge takes 19 minutes on a fast charger. All variants are RWD and feature a rear-mounted motor that's good for 125kW and 250Nm of torque. Zero to 100 takes a tick over eight sec for each. Think of the MGS5 as the SUV version of the MG4. It shares the same Modular Scalable Platform with the hatch, so should have similar rear-drive dynamics. The battery pack is 110mm high, creating added passenger and luggage space. Standard items include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a 12.8-inch display. This features MG's upgraded interface technology. Essence adds a hands-free power tailgate and panoramic sunroof. MG New Zealand is offering a free bonus for the first 30 customers who take delivery of an MGS5; they will also receive a 7kW MG Charge Hub when they collect their car. The MG Charge Hub means owners can recharge their vehicle from 10 to 80 per cent overnight. Peter Ciao, CEO for MG Motor Australia and New Zealand, commented, 'The MGS5 EV will offer the best value for Kiwi families in the electric SUV segment. 'Our MG engineers have designed a beautiful looking car, featuring a great range of technology features as standard. 'New Zealanders loved the driving dynamics of the MG4, and these are carried over to the MGS5 EV. 'Our love of an SUV, combined with MG's upgraded tech features, means the MGS5 EV is sure to be embraced by Kiwi motorists. '2025 continues to be an exciting year for MG Motor New Zealand and the MGS5 EV reflects the value MG is committed to delivering. Whatever stage they are in, MG will deliver unmatched value for all New Zealanders.' Other MGS5 features include 40:60 split rear seats, 453-1441L of boot space, and five-link rear suspension. The MGS5 is also compatible with MG's iSMART mobile application. This allows owners to control key functions remotely, including charging and route planning. The iSMART app shows the vehicle's precise location on the in-built map, ensuring drivers never lose track of where they have parked. All MGS5 models carry the company's 10-year/250,000km warranty. They are available through dealerships around New Zealand of which there are now nearly twenty. The MGS5 carries a five-star safety rating, achieved this year. For more on the MGS see here.

Sunflowers Set To Bloom In Kindergartens Across The Nation

Press Release – Daltons Sunflowers in Kindergartens Thousands of sunflower seeds are ready to be sown and inspire a passion for gardening in young Kiwi kids through the Daltons 2025 Sunflowers in Kindergartens Project, which officially kicks off today. Now in its ninth season, the project provides participating kindergartens with everything they need to grow their own giant sunflowers. Along the way, children explore plant lifecycles, practise measuring and recording growth, and enjoy watching their plants flourish – from tiny seed to towering bloom. This year, 11,504 children from 238 kindergartens and learning centres are taking part across 11 regional Kindergarten Associations. Each kindergarten will join in the fun and a bit of friendly competition to see who can grow the tallest and widest sunflowers in their region. 'Gardening is more than just growing plants, it's about fostering a love of nature, learning patience, responsibility, collaboration and other important life skills,' says Daltons General Manager, Colin Parker. 'The project is a fun, hands-on way for children to learn these values while growing something beautiful to enjoy together.' 'Kindy kids will be able to take their gardening skills home and inspire their families to grow their own produce. In today's economy, it's a good idea to grow some high-yielding crops at home to help ease the weekly food bill,' Parker adds. Throughout the project teachers receive support via regular newsletters filled with gardening tips, resources, and fun sunflower activities that can easily align with Te Whāriki, Aotearoa New Zealand's Early Childhood Curriculum. Daltons brings the project to life with the help of three proud partners. Kings Seeds generously supply the wonderful Sunflower Skyscraper seeds – the tallest plant ever grown in the project reached an impressive 3.41 metres (that's taller than a basketball hoop!). Each winner's prize pack includes a store voucher from The Warehouse and a handy GARDENA Comfort Hand Trowel, alongside a range of Daltons products. The project runs through to Wednesday 10 December 2025, when the blooms will be celebrated, winners announced, and prizes awarded. For more information on this or to follow along the sunflower journey, visit or visit the Sunflower Project Facebook page. Additional information about the 2025 Sunflowers in Kindergartens Project • The Daltons Sunflowers in Kindergartens Project is only running in 11 Kindergarten Associations in selected regions of New Zealand. Daltons tips for youngsters to grow giant sunflowers at home Plants begin as a seed and in order to grow, the seed must first germinate. Germination is what happens to a seed that has been dormant (asleep) and with enough warmth and water it will sprout (grow). Follow our guide on how to sow your own sunflower seed so it can begin its journey and grow into a giant sunflower. It needs warmth, sunshine, and water, a little tender loving care! What you will need: • Daltons Premium Seed Mix • Kings Seeds – Skyscraper Sunflower seeds • Small pot e.g: yoghurt container etc (just make sure it has drainage holes in the bottom) • Small shovel • Water spray bottle • Plastic dish or ice cream container to hold your pots in • Gloves • Adult to help Step 1: Take your small pot and fill it (almost to the top) with Daltons Premium Seed Mix. Step 2: Sow your sunflower seed into the soil about 1-1.5cm deep – no more than twice the diameter of the seed. (Seeds sown too deeply will not germinate). Step 3: Add a little more soil on top and water lightly. Be sure to water regularly for even germination and growth – but don't overwater as it can rot the seeds. Step 4: Place your seed pots into an ice cream or yoghurt container so they do not leak water. Find a nice warm, sunny windowsill indoors. It's very important to keep the temperature even so they germinate well. When will your seedling be ready to plant outside? When seedlings sprout, a set of leaves form first that look almost like a four-leaf clover. A few days later, a third single leaf will emerge that does not look like the first ones. This is called the first true leaf. Your seedling will be big enough to plant outdoors (weather dependent) once it has sprouted its second set of true leaves – it should be about 10-15cm tall. Planting your seedling Choose a spot in the garden that gets plenty of sun throughout the day and is sheltered from the wind. Find a strong, sturdy stake that is tall enough to support your seedling plant as it grows. Stake the seedling when planting it so you don't disturb the plant's roots later on. Gently tie the plant to the stake with soft ties like recycled pantyhose.
