Horses and mules to the rescue: How Chenab Bridge was built in Kashmir

NEW DELHI: Long before towering cranes swung into action or steel arches touched the skies, it was the humble clip-clop of hooves that echoed through the Himalayas. To bring the dream of connecting Kashmir to Kanyakumari alive, the team building the Chenab Bridge, now the world's highest railway bridge, first had to navigate a far less glamorous challenge: getting there. In the early days, the steep, unforgiving terrain of the Himalayas offered no roads, no tracks—only winding, narrow paths. The solution? Horses and mules. 'Initially, mules and horses were used by the project team to reach the location,' said a spokesperson from Afcons Infrastructure Limited, the engineering firm that executed the mega project. 'Gradually, temporary access roads were built, finally leading to more permanent routes,' he told PTI. It took grit and persistence to tame the landscape. On the north bank of the Chenab, an 11-km road was carved out; on the south, 12 km more followed - routes that would eventually bring in machinery, steel, and hope. On Friday, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi walked across the bridge waving the tricolour, what unfolded was not just the inauguration of a piece of infrastructure, but the realisation of a nation's engineering audacity. Along with the Chenab Bridge, the PM also flagged off the Anji Rail Bridge, the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), and Vande Bharat trains—bringing Kashmir a rail heartbeat closer to the rest of India. Taming the Himalayas wasn't easy. Using the world's tallest crossbar cable cranes and heavy-duty machines, engineers performed consolidation grouting on ancient, brittle slopes, fortifying them to bear the massive arch foundations. The real magic unfolded on April 5, 2021. As cantilevered arches extended from either bank of the Chenab, they met in mid-air like clasped hands—a moment of triumph after years of calculations, courage and concrete. And the feats didn't stop there. For the first time in Indian Railways' history, incremental launching was executed on a transition curve and a longitudinal gradient at the same location,. It wasn't just engineering excellence but also scientific precision that held the bridge together. A lab accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) was set up on-site, another Indian Railways first, to ensure uncompromising quality at every stage. Standing 359 metres above the Chenab River, 35 metres taller than Paris' Eiffel Tower, the bridge is now the world's tallest railway structure. A marvel in steel and spirit.

"Historic day": Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw after PM Modi ianugurates Chenab bridge

Katra (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 6 (ANI): Calling this day 'historic', Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday said that the Chenab bridge part of the Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Line (USBRL) was constructed working in harmony with nature. Addressing the public during the inauguration of the Chenab bridge, Vaishnaw said, 'Today is a historic day. Another gem has been added to Jammu and Kashmir. Today, PM Modi has inaugurated the railway line connecting Jammu to Srinagar. The country had cherished the dream of this railway line for decades. There were great challenges in its construction... Instead of trying to conquer nature, working in harmony with nature, this railway line has become a reality today through this network of bridges and tunnels. This was made possible due to the steely determination, hard work and laser-sharp focus of our Prime Minister.' Prime Minister Modi today inaugurated the world's highest railway arch bridge - the 'Chenab Railway Bridge' - and India's first cable-stayed 'Anji Bridge' in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday also flagged off two Vande Bharat Express trains from Katra Railway Station, directly connecting the Jammu division with Kashmir. This marks a major milestone in Jammu and Kashmir's railway connectivity. Before flagging off the trains, Prime Minister Modi interacted with schoolchildren on board and also spoke with railway staff members present on the train. The new Vande Bharat Express service will reduce the travel time between Katra and Srinagar from the current 6-7 hours by road to just about 3 hours. The trains aim to provide a fast, comfortable, and reliable travel option for residents, tourists, and pilgrims. The train will run through the Anji Khad Bridge, which is India's first cable-stayed railway bridge, and the Chenab Bridge, which is the highest railway bridge in the world. These trains have been specially designed to operate in the cold climatic conditions of the Kashmir Valley. In a remarkable gesture, Prime Minister Modi waved the Tiranga, the Indian national flag and carried it forward on the deck of the bridge on the Chenab River. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah were present during the inauguration. These bridges are part of the ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) project in Jammu and Kashmir. The iconic Chenab Railway Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge, is part of the Katra-to-Sangaldan stretch, connecting New Delhi directly with Kashmir via Katra. Situated in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, the Chenab Bridge is an engineering marvel standing at a height of 359 metres above the riverbed. It will officially connect the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India via rail for the first time in history. The project faced numerous engineering and logistical challenges due to the region's difficult terrain and seismic sensitivity. Yet, after years of meticulous work, the bridge now stands as a testament to India's technological prowess and commitment to inclusive development. It marks a transformative chapter in India's infrastructural landscape, promising greater connectivity, economic growth, and social integration in the region. The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project is a 272 km long USBRL project, constructed at a cost of around Rs 43,780 crore, which includes 36 tunnels (spanning 119 km) and 943 bridges. The project establishes all-weather, seamless rail connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country, aiming to transform regional mobility and drive socio-economic integration. PM Modi inaugurates ₹43,780-crore Chenab rail bridge, world's tallest arch; 272-km USBRL rail link to Kashmir now complete

On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the Chenab railway bridge in Jammu and Kashmir. Standing as the tallest railway arch bridge globally, the structure marks the conclusion of a 42-year effort to connect Kashmir to the rest of India through rail. The inauguration was attended by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Vande Bharat now runs between Jammu and Srinagar The event also saw the launch of a Vande Bharat Express between Katra and Srinagar, creating the first train link between the Jammu region and the Kashmir valley. The train is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Line (USBRL) and is equipped to handle extreme winter conditions, including sub-zero temperatures as low as -20°C. 'PM @narendramodi at the Chenab Bridge. The state-of-the-art bridge will improve connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar,' posts PMO India (@PMOIndia). USBRL Project: A feat across the Himalayas The USBRL stretches 272 km through the rugged Himalayan landscape and is completely electrified. It features 36 tunnels with a combined length of 119 km and 943 bridges, and has been constructed at a cost of ₹43,780 crore. Key sections of the line were opened in phases—Qazigund-Baramulla in 2009, Qazigund-Banihal in 2013, Udhampur-Katra in 2014, and Banihal-Sangaldan in February 2024. Train designed for harsh terrain and all-weather operation The newly introduced Vande Bharat Express is designed to endure the challenges of the region. Features like heated windshields, thermal insulation, and advanced heating systems ensure that the train can run comfortably in freezing conditions and serve the people of Jammu and Kashmir year-round. This new railway infrastructure is expected to improve trade, tourism, and daily mobility across the region.
