Detailed report sought on temple demolition in Hyderabad's Banjara Hills
HYDERABAD: The Telangana High Court has directed the state government to provide complete details on the demolition of the Peddamma Temple in Banjara Hills and ensure the safe preservation of the Peddamma Thalli idol until further orders. Justice Vijaysen Reddy issued notices to the Hyderabad District Collector and local Tahsildar, adjourning the matter to August 18. The court was hearing a lunch-motion petition filed by Palle Vinod Kumar Reddy of Himayatnagar, who alleged that the July 24 demolition violated Articles 14, 21, 25 and 26 of the Constitution. The petitioner claimed that officials had razed the temple and removed the idol without prior notice, consultation with devotees, or adherence to religious customs, and sought reinstallation of the idol under Endowments Department supervision, rebuilding of the temple at government expense, and legal action against the responsible officials. Counsel for the petitioner alleged the demolition was carried out at 3 am to avoid public resistance, calling it an affront to devotees' sentiments. The government's counsel said the land was government property and the demolition was to prevent encroachment. Justice Vijaysen Reddy directed that the idol be kept safe until the next hearing.

Telangana man sentenced to death for rape, murder of 12-year-old girl
Hyderabad: A court in Telangana's Nalgonda district on Thursday awarded a death sentence to a man for the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl. The Special POCSO court found the 24-year-old accused, a butcher, guilty in the case and pronounced the death sentence. The court found M. Mukarram guilty under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1.10 lakh. POCSO Court in-charge Roja Ramani also ordered Rs 10 lakh compensation to the victim's family. The accused, who has a hearing and speech impairment, was provided with an interpreter during the court proceedings. The shocking incident occurred in April 2013 in Nalgonda town. The accused had sexually assaulted the girl after luring her to his home. After the sexual assault, the accused strangled her to death and dumped the body in a drainage canal. Based on a complaint from the girl's family, One Town Police Station in Nalgonda had registered a missing case. During the investigation, police found the victim's body. The accused was later identified and arrested. A case under the POCSO Act and the IPC was registered against the accused. The trial lasted in the Nalgonda district court for 10 years. After hearing the arguments, the in-charge judge of the Special POCSO court found the accused guilty and awarded him the death sentence. The victim's family hailed the court order. Police said they conducted a thorough investigation into the case and collected and produced all evidence before the court. Last year, the Telangana High Court confirmed the death sentence awarded to a 30-year-old man, who was found guilty of murdering a five-year-old girl after abducting and raping her at Narsingi on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The High Court confirmed the capital punishment pronounced by a local court in the 2017 case.

Telangana HC orders release of 18-year-old from children's home after ‘illegal detention' plea
The Telangana High Court on Wednesday ordered the immediate release of an 18-year-old woman in a habeas corpus case involving her 'illegal detention' in a government children's home in Hyderabad. Rescued from sex trafficking in 2018, the woman—then a minor—has been in the state's protective custody for over seven years now, even though those accused of trafficking her were discharged of all offences in 2023. The division bench of Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya and Justice Gadi Praveen Kumar allowed the writ petition moved by the woman's aunt, who was earlier discharged by the Telangana High Court of offences under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956. Involved in a sex trafficking and prostitution case in Yadagirigutta in Bhongir district, the minor had been placed in various Child Care Institutions, including the NGO Prajwala, since 2018. The petitioner argued that her niece was being illegally detained despite having reached adulthood and facing no pending charges. Prajwala moved an implead petition in the case, opposing the woman's release on the grounds that she should continue to reside in the government home for the sake of rehabilitation and support. However, the petitioner's counsel opposed this, stating that the 18-year-old's detention was a violation of her freedom and went against the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, as she was now an adult. The counsel also contended that the woman's detention was being extended despite there being no pending offences and that it was against the law laid down in the Juvenile Justice Act. Justice Bhattacharya observed that if the woman is an adult, she is free to go wherever she wishes. While the government pleader stated the state's only interest was to provide support, the court determined that the woman was being held against her will. 'Considering the overall circumstances, we, however, deem it fit to direct the CWC [Child Welfare Committee] Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri district to periodically enquire about the welfare of the detenue, preferably, once every month,' Justice Bhattacharya said, adding, 'The detenue shall be at liberty getting in touch with the CWC in case the detenue needs any assistance, including for her aspirations.'
