Ronald Acuna provides instant thrill in long-awaited Braves return

New York Post24-05-2025

It was quite a welcome back for Ronald Acuña Jr. on Friday.
During his first big league game in nearly a year after suffering an ACL tear last May, Acuña, 27, belted a home run into the left field stands on the first pitch he saw to open scoring for the Braves against the Padres.
As he trotted toward first base, Acuña used Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant's signature celebration, which mimics throwing an imaginary projectile and covering his ears.
Morant re-shared the video of the home run on his X account with a fire emoji.
3 Acuna used the same celebration as Ja Morant.
Acuña's homer in the first inning was the only score for the Braves, who wound up losing to the Padres, 2-1.
Shortly before being called back up to the Braves, Acuña homered in his first rehab game for the Braves' Florida Complex League team on May 13.
The four-time All-Star has been sidelined since last May when he tore his left ACL while taking a lead off second base during a game against the Pirates.

Acuña's injury in 2024 was the second ACL injury of his career, as he tore the same ligament in his right knee during a game against the Marlins four years ago, causing him to miss significant portions of the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
The outfielder managed to fully bounce back from his first ACL tear, earning 2023 NL MVP honors after batting .337 and becoming the first 40-40 player since Alfonso Soriano in 2006.
Braves manager Brian Snitker was elated to have his franchise cornerstone back on the team.

'He's one of those players that you better not go get a beer or whatever because you might miss something really cool, you know?' Snitker told reporters before Friday's game. 'I mean, he's that type of force, I think, in the game. I think he's going to energize everybody. Going to energize the fans. Going to energize his teammates.'
Teammate Austin Riley also showed excitement that the three-time Silver Slugger winner has returned.
'It's huge,' Riley told reporters. 'The talent is there. The energy he brings, having Ronald up there at the top of the lineup. … He can change a game at any point.'

MLB rumors: Padres again targeting trade for Red Sox star

The post MLB rumors: Padres again targeting trade for Red Sox star appeared first on ClutchPoints. The San Diego Padres have done well to stay neck-and-neck with the Los Angeles Dodgers atop the National League West to start the 2025 campaign, but if they intend on making a championship run this season, they are going to need some reinforcements. According to a recent report, the team is showing interest in trading for Boston Red Sox star left fielder Jarren Duran to fill arguably the biggest hole on their roster. Advertisement The Padres have been struggling to get any sort of production from the left field spot this season, as they have primarily used a combination of Jason Heyward and Gavin Sheets at this position to this point. While Sheets has been a revelation at the plate, he suffered a slew of injuries after crashing into the left field wall during the team's win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, and while he may not end up missing much time, the team has set their sights on Duran once again. 'As the Padres face a daunting upcoming schedule and glaring holes at the bottom of their lineup, their list of trade targets again includes Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran, league sources told The Athletic,' Dennis Lin reported. 'The Padres expressed interest in Duran ahead of the 2024 season, before veteran left fielder Jurickson Profar and then-rookie center fielder Jackson Merrill joined Duran as first-time All-Stars.' 'Now, an underwhelming Red Sox team might consider Duran expendable; outfielder Roman Anthony remains tantalizingly close to Boston, and a restless fan base has been clamoring for the arrival of the sport's consensus No. 1 prospect.' Could the Padres trade for Jarren Duran from the Red Sox? Mandatory Credit: Eric Canha-Imagn Images Whereas San Diego has enjoyed a solid start to the year, the opposite has been true for the Boston Red Sox, as they have crawled out to a 29-32 record through the first two months of the season. There's still time for them to turn things around, but if they continue struggling, they could consider trading Duran since the top prospect in baseball, Roman Anthony, appears to be more than ready to be promoted to the majors. Duran enjoyed a breakout season in 2024, but he has taken a step back so far in 2025, as he's posted a .264 batting average with four home runs and 34 runs batted in. Still, he's one of the Red Sox best players, and he'd be an immediate upgrade for the Padres in left field. Even if Boston struggles, though, they may be more interested in trading either Ceddanne Rafaela or Wilyer Abreu in order to make room for Anthony, so it remains to be seen whether San Diego will be successful in their efforts to land the former All-Star.

Padres trade proposal for Jarren Duran answers left field question

The post Padres trade proposal for Jarren Duran answers left field question appeared first on ClutchPoints. The San Diego Padres were the hottest team in baseball in April. The month of May didn't treat them quite as well, and the team can't afford to slip anymore in a division that boasts the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, and Arizona Diamondbacks. Advertisement The Padres have some of the biggest superstars in baseball. Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, Luis Arraez, Jackson Merrill, and Dylan Cease are some of the top players in the sport. The team has a few glaring needs, though. Left field, catcher, and starting pitching stick out as weak spots. The team could fix their left field problem by trading for Jarren Duran. The Boston Red Sox have disappointed this year, which has led to reports suggesting that they could move the outfielder. The Padres should have interest regardless, but they will have even more urgency in making a move because Gavin Sheets suffered an injury after colliding with the outfield wall. So what would a Duran-to-San Diego trade look like? What could Padres offer for Jarren Duran? Padres receive: Jarren Duran Advertisement Red Sox receive: Kash Mayfield (Padres No. 3), Humberto Cruz (Padres No. 4) The Padres are no strangers to making big moves. Of the stars listed above, Merrill was the only player the team drafted. The rest they acquired via blockbuster trade or with a huge deal in free agency. A move for Duran would be another huge move, yet it wouldn't be a surprise if the Padres pulled it off. In fact, the Padres have reportedly shown interest in the outfielder before. Duran was an All-Star and one of the top players in baseball last season, but his production has slipped this year after moving from center field to left field. Duran's numbers have been far from horrible, though, and considering the hardships he has faced and overcame in his life, including a suicide attempt in 2022, it can be expected that he will work his way back to a star level on the field. He also has a team option for 2026 for just $8 million, so the Padres wouldn't be getting just four months of Duran. Advertisement The Padres started Jason Heyward in left field on opening day, but the veteran, who is well past his prime, is currently on the injury list. Heyward's days in San Diego might be numbered because he is well below the Mendoza Line with a .176 batting average. Heyward's injury and struggles have forced designated hitter Gavin Sheets into action in left. Sheets then suffered a number of injuries after crashing into the wall in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Padres' farm system isn't as deep as it once was, which could make pulling off a trade harder. Still, they have two of the best prospects in baseball in the lower levels of the minor leagues in Leo De Vries and Ethan Salas. It is unclear if the Red Sox would require one of them in return for Duran – assuming the team is even open to moving him in the first place. Regardless, Duran would fit well in San Diego. He can provide speed, fielding, contact, and a little bit of power to the Padres roster. Duran led the American League in doubles (48) and triples (14) last season. Would the Red Sox trade Jarren Duran? David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports Despite a drop in production from the outfielder and a disappointing season as a whole for the team, it seems unlikely that the Red Sox would trade Duran, at least anytime soon. That is even more so the case if the Padres wouldn't offer De Vries or Salas in a trade package for Duran. Advertisement Despite being in fourth place in the stacked AL East, the Red Sox can still make a run and catch up to anybody in their division. The New York Yankees are a ways ahead of them and are playing good baseball, but the Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays are only a couple of games up on Boston. Duran is a key player on the team and will be vital in turning the season around. He was a fringe MVP candidate just last season, and although that was clearly a breakout campaign, it shouldn't be looked at as a fluky season. The reason some believe that Duran is expendable is because the Red Sox have Roman Anthony in the minor leagues. The outfielder is the top prospect in baseball. With Rafael Devers, Alex Bregman, and Garrett Crochet on the roster, the Red Sox should be looking to buy, not sell.
