Rishabh Pant won plaudits for his decision to withdraw Lucknow Super Giants' appeal for a run-out at the non-striker's end during the final league match of the 2025 Indian Premier League against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Lucknow.
The run-out was orchestrated by leg-spinner Digvesh Singh Rathi against RCB keeper-batter Jitesh Sharma, who had filled in for Rajat Patidar as captain. Pant, however, opted against continuing with the appeal, which led to a heart-warming hug from Jitesh.

While the LSG captain has since received praise for his gesture, spin legend Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed his displeasure and slammed Pant for subjecting his bowler to 'humiliation' instead of backing him and resulting in his 'vilification in front of crores and crores of people'.
'Captain's job is actually to back a player. A captain's job is not to make a bowler feel small. By making this decision of pulling away an appeal… it should have discussed earlier.
'We don't know if they discussed, but let's stop this vilification of that youngster in front of crores and crores of people. Do we do that to anybody else? Why does a bowler look small? It is actually a humiliation,' Ashwin said in a video posted on his YouTube channel.
Pant's decision will 'scar' Digvesh, feels Ashwin
The 38-year-old felt that the incident would 'scar' Digvesh, who has been quite the colorful character in his maiden IPL season with his notebook celebrations and run-ins with members of the opposition.
'So what happens is a bowler feels so small that he will never do that again. People will say that he should never do that (run out at the non-striker's end) again. Why should he not do that? It is actually not about the rule. The batsman taking an extra step gives him an opportunity to finish a two.'
'Digvesh Rathi is not my relative, not my friend. I don't know who he is. But I am saying you will scar the bowler so much that it will really affect him. But because nobody really cares about a bowler. So you can insult him by withdrawing his appeal in front of crores of people,' Ashwin added.

The incident took place during the 17th over of RCB's chase after LSG had posted 227/3 on the board thanks to Pant's emphatic 54-ball century . Jitesh had a narrow escape earlier in the same over, holing out to backward point on 49 off a no-ball in the first delivery and completing his maiden IPL fifty with a six in the subsequent 'Free Hit'.
As for the run-out in question, Jitesh would have continued batting had Pant continued with Digvesh's appeal for a run-out instead of withdrawing it, as the bowler had already completed his delivery stride before turning around and breaking the stumps at the non-striker's end.
Jitesh would go on to smash an unbeaten 85 off 33 balls to help RCB cruise to a six-wicket victory at Lucknow's Ekana Cricket Stadium and seal a top-two finish at the end of the league phase.
Revisiting Ashwin's history with 'Mankading'
Ashwin's take on the incident is of importance as the senior off-spinner has been in the news for running batters out at the non-striker's end on multiple occasions, including England wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler in the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League.
Ashwin was captaining Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) when he dismissed Rajasthan Royals opener Buttler for leaving his crease, which spiralled into a massive controversy with the Indian spinner being accused of not upholding the 'Spirit of Cricket'.

Cricket's laws, however, state that a bowler can run the non-striker out for leaving his/her crease before reaching the point of release in the delivery stride, meaning Ashwin was fully justified in dismissing Buttler .
Ashwin, who had retired from international cricket in December and had returned to the Chennai Super Kings after a decade this IPL season, had previously tried to run Sri Lanka's Lahiru Thirimanne out at the non-striker's end during the 2012 Commonwealth Bank Triangular Series in Australia.
The appeal, however, was later withdrawn after umpires Paul Reiffel and Billy Bowden asked Virender Sehwag, who was captaining India at the time in MS Dhoni's absence, to reconsider.
The off-spinner has warned non-strikers on several other occasions without effecting a run-out, including long-time India teammate Shikhar Dhawan during Punjab's match against Delhi Capitals later in the same season.

Shreyas Iyer hurls expletives, gives Shashank Singh a mouthful after batter's run out almost jeopardises final chances

Shreyas Iyer might have played an unbeaten 87-run knock off 41 balls against Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Qualifier 2 to help Punjab Kings reach the final, but the skipper wasn't pleased after the fixture came to an end at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The PBKS captain was seen giving Shashank Singh a mouthful following the latter's run-out in the crucial encounter. After Shreyas Iyer hit the winning six off the bowling of Ashwani Kumar, the entire Punjab Kings' camp charged to the middle to hug the skipper and celebrate the feat of reaching the IPL final for the second time in their history. However, when Shashank Singh approached Shreyas Iyer, the latter hurled expletives and gave him a mouthful, clearly expressing his anger with how Shashank was unable to make the non-striker's end in time and was caught short of the crease by a bullet Hardik Pandya throw. Shreyas Iyer even raised his hands and pointed his fingers towards Shashank, expressing his dissatisfaction with how Shashank had not made the crease in time. Shashank Singh did not say anything to Shreyas Iyer as he simply walked ahead. However, his expression clearly showed that he, too, was disappointed with his run-out in the 17th over of the contest. Shashank Singh walked back to the dugout after being run out for just 2 runs on the fourth ball of the 17th over. Off the bowling of Trent Boult, Shashank Singh hit the low full-toss wide of Hardik Pandya at mid-on. The Mumbai Indians skipper then gathered the ball quickly and he brought the stumps down in a jiffy. Going by the naked eye, it seemed Shashank Singh had made his crease comfortably at the non-striker's end. However, the replays showed Shashank jogging and taking it lightly, and in the end, he was caught short of the popping crease. This was a huge moment in the game, as a lack of dive cost the Punjab Kings. This was a case of poor running from Shashank Singh and it is no surprise that Shreyas Iyer wasn't pleased one bit with what transpired in the middle. Speaking of the contest between PBKS and MI, Iyer played a match-winning knock of 87* to help the side chase down 204 with five wickets in hand and six balls to spare. As a result of this win, PBKS qualified for the IPL 2025 final, where they will take on Rajat Patidar-led Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Tuesday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

IPL 2025, Qualifier 2; Sensational Shreyas Iyer leads Punjab Kings to the final, books a date with RCB

Punjab Kings pulled off the impossible. Shreyas Iyer & co. managed to successfully chase 204 against the Mumbai Indians and barged into the final of the Indian Premier League 2025. Punjab Kings' stunning win meant that we will have a new winner in the Indian Premier League. Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings will contest the final on June 3 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. After 18 failed attempts, Punjab Kings became the first team to successfully chase a 200+ target against the Mumbai Indians in IPL. It's also the highest successful run-chase in the history of IPL playoffs. Josh Inglis played the blinder that Punjab Kings badly wanted, clobbering Jasprit Bumrah for 20 runs in his first over. Yet, Punjab Kings managed only 81 runs in the first 9 overs of the chase. Trent Boult dropped an absolute sitter at deep fine leg in the 10th over and gave massive life to Nehal Wadhera on 13 runs. The left-hander rode his luck and scored 48 runs off 29 balls in a vital 84-run stand for the 4th wicket with his captain, Shreyas Iyer. Shashank Singh's untimely run-out added unnecessary pressure on Punjab Kings. Shreyas Iyer took his time to settle, scoring just 19 runs in the first 15 balls he faced. Reece Topley, playing his first match of the tournament, came to bowl the 13th over, and Shreyas smelled blood right away. His hat-trick sixes brought down the required run rate from 11.87 to 10.85. Shreyas mixed brute power with immaculate timing and played the best innings of his IPL career. He used the pace of Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah to score three boundaries in the 17th and 18th overs in the third-man region. Ashwani Kumar got his length wrong in the penultimate over, and the skipper wasn't the one to show mercy on the youngster. Four sixes in the 19th over sealed the deal, with Shreyas standing tall on 87* off 41 balls. He lost the battle to RCB in the Qualifier 1, but he is ready for the war tomorrow. Shreyas Iyer became the first captain to lead three teams to an IPL final. He led Delhi Capitals to their maiden final in 2020 and won the title with KKR in 2024. "I just wait for such games": Nehal Wadhera shines with crucial knock in IPL Qualifier 2

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 2 (ANI): Shreyas Iyer rose to the occasion with a captain's knock that will be etched in Punjab Kings' (PBKS) history, as his unbeaten 87 off just 41 balls guided the franchise to a five-wicket win over Mumbai Indians (MI) in the second qualifier of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at Ahmedabad on Monday. With this result, PBKS stormed into their second-ever IPL final, their first since 2014, ending an 11-year wait. Chasing a challenging total of 204 against the five-time champions, Iyer remained the fulcrum of the innings, showing poise and power in equal measure but equally important was the contribution from Nehal Wadhera, who played a vital hand in the middle overs with a composed 48 off 29 deliveries, striking four boundaries and two sixes, and more importantly, forming a match-defining 84-run stand with his skipper. Reflecting on his performance, Wadhera revealed his mindset heading into the high-stakes clash, 'I just wait for such games, couldn't be more eager to play such a knock in a crucial game like the semi-final (Qualifier 2). This will be close to my heart.' Having been part of the Mumbai Indians setup in the past, Wadhera admitted that prior knowledge of the opposition helped him tailor his approach, 'I have been with MI for two years and I have played them before, so I know what they could try and I changed a few things in my batting accordingly.' The southpaw was full of praise for Iyer's clarity and calm during the chase. 'He (Shreyas) was pretty clear that I just should see and hit the ball accordingly,' Wadhera noted. 'If it was on my radar, I would just go for it. I needed to convert the balls into boundaries and it turned out to be good,' he noted. His strategic hitting helped Punjab maintain the tempo of the chase. By the time Ashwani Kumar dismissed him, PBKS had already crossed the 150-run mark, with the equation well in their favour. Wadhera also lauded his captain's ability to steer the innings under pressure, 'He (Shreyas) is a chase master and proved it today as well. A lot of learnings from him and I hope we carry forward the momentum and win against RCB as well.' With Iyer finishing things off in style and the middle order contributing around him, PBKS crossed the finish line with an over to spare, setting up a title clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Tuesday in Ahmedabad.
