Lionesses to celebrate Euros win with open top bus parade and Downing Street visit

Yahoo2 days ago
The Lionesses will celebrate their historic Euros victory with an open-top bus parade in central London and a trip to Downing Street.
England fans erupted with joy across the country as the team defended their Euros title in a penalty shootout win over Spain in the final in Basel, Switzerland, on Sunday.
Chloe Kelly scored the winning spot-kick following two huge saves from goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, sending supporters in fan zones into raptures.
The King said the team had the royal family's 'warmest appreciation and admiration' following their victory, adding: 'The next task is to bring home the World Cup in 2027 if you possibly can.'
The Downing Street reception on Monday is due to be hosted by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and sports minister Stephanie Peacock.
The team will then attend a homecoming celebration event on Tuesday, with a ceremony expected to take place outside Buckingham Palace.
However, it is understood Downing Street has no plans for a bank holiday to mark the Lionesses' triumph.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer hailed the team's triumph, saying: 'The Lionesses have once again captured the hearts of the nation.
'Their victory is not only a remarkable sporting achievement, but an inspiration for young people across the country.
'It stands as a testament to the determination, resilience and unity that define this outstanding team.'
There will be an open-top bus parade along the Mall before the ceremony at the Queen Victoria Memorial, the FA said.
Fans can attend for free and it will be broadcast live on BBC, ITV, and Sky.
Supporters stood on tables, waved flags, threw drinks in the air and excitedly hugged each other as England claimed victory, while the Prince of Wales and Sir Keir watched on from the stands in Basel.
Alessia Russo gave the Lionesses hope of retaining their Euros title with her second-half equaliser after Mariona Caldentey netted the opener for Spain in the 25th minute.
In a statement posted on X after the game, Charles said: 'This brings you, your manager and all your support team my most heartfelt congratulations on winning the Euros 2025.
'For more years than I care to remember, England fans have sung that famous chant 'football's coming home'.
'As you return home with the trophy you won at Wembley three years ago, it is a source of great pride that, through sporting skill and awesome teamwork, the Lionesses have made those words ring true.
'For this, you have my whole family's warmest appreciation and admiration.'
The King added: 'More than that, though, you have shown through your example over past weeks that there are no setbacks so tough that defeat cannot be transformed into victory, even as the final whistle looms.
'Well done, Lionesses.'
A picture of the Prince of Wales with his arm around his daughter Princess Charlotte was posted to X following the presentation of the trophy to the Lionesses, with the caption 'champions of Europe'.
The pair congratulated the team in a short statement, saying: 'What a game! Lionesses, you are the champions of Europe and we couldn't be prouder of the whole team. Enjoy this moment England.'
The statement was the first message Charlotte has personally signed on the Prince and Princess of Wales's X account.
Tower Bridge was lit up in red and white following the Lionesses' victory, the City Bridge Foundation said.
Sir Keir was the first to congratulate England on their win – posting on X: 'Champions! Congratulations Lionesses – what a team. What a game. What drama.
'You dug deep when it mattered most and you've made the nation proud. History makers.'
William was spotted in the stands applauding and celebrating with those around him – including Princess Charlotte.
As the presentation ceremony took place, the Prince of Wales was among those to congratulate star striker Michelle Agyemang on being named young player of the tournament.
William exchanged words with Agyemang, appearing to say 'well played, fantastic, well done'.
Agyemang, 19, who had one England cap before the tournament, scored crucial equalisers in the Lionesses' quarter-final and semi-final comebacks.
There was non-stop applause in her home town of South Ockendon as fans saw the Arsenal forward step through a guard of honour to pick up her award.
Supporters at her old club Brandon Groves AFC danced a conga line to the sounds of Vindaloo after England's victory.
The club's vice-chairwoman, Paula Howes, said Agyemang will help give youngsters the 'motivation and drive' to progress from grassroots football to the top of the game.
She said: 'I think she (Agyemang) has got that determination and that drive on the pitch, and the girls can connect with that.
'It is also knowing that she is a local girl as well, I think that helps give them the motivation and drive, to know that you can start at grassroots football and progress up to the higher level, if you work at it.'
The National Autistic Society congratulated their ambassador Lucy Bronze on the Lionesses victory, adding: 'We hope she has inspired the next generation of autistic girls to follow their dreams.'
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy also gave her reaction to the win, saying: 'What an absolutely extraordinary achievement by our Lionesses – once again they have made history and united the country with pride and joy.'
England's path to the final was marked by late drama.
They sealed their spot with a last-gasp extra-time win over Italy, following a penalty shootout victory against Sweden in the quarter-finals after nearly crashing out in extra time.

James Pearce confirms Liverpool have signed a SPECIAL talent

By © IMAGO - Richard Hughes Liverpool 2024-25 Liverpool's best signing flies under the radar In short, Liverpool's first-team squad is looking a LOT better than it did last season. And that squad was good enough to win the Premier League title in Arne Slot's first season in charge. But it's another, lesser-heralded deal that is making the biggest impact during this preseason campaign. Hughes and Liverpool owners FSG were criticised in some quarters last summer for a relative lack of transfer action. Having missed out on Martin Zubimendi, Liverpool opted to stay out of the race for an alternative. In fact the only first-team player added in last summer's window was Federico Chiesa - now considered a busted flush. Liverpool complete deal for special Ngumoha But Liverpool were playing the long game with one signing in particular. Rio Ngumoha was only 15 years old when he swapped Chelsea's youth ranks for Liverpool. It was a hugely controversial deal - with the Londoners losing perhaps the best English attacker in his age group. The Reds couldn't keep Ngumoha under wraps for long however - and he has quickly moved through the categories. © IMAGO - Rio Ngumoha Liverpool 2024-25 Ngumoha's sensational rise Having initially played for the club's under-18s, Ngumoha moved up to Premier League 2 level as well as playing UEFA Youth League. Such is the excitement around the youngster that he has ALREADY made his senior first-team debut. Ngumoha played against Accrington in the FA Cup in January - and has been in and around the senior squad in the months since. The winger is now with Arne Slot's squad for their preseason campaign - starring in Hong Kong against AC Milan and against Yokohama F Marinos on Wednesday morning. Described as a "special talent" by Liverpool insider James Pearce, Ngumoha took the game to the Japanese side after his introduction as a substitute. He scored a remarkable solo goal in the 3-1 victory - with Pearce stating that the England U17 star had lit up the arena. © IMAGO - Rio Ngumoha Liverpool

Bayern Munich officially announces the signing of Luis Diaz.

Getty Images Although there was a lot of tug of war from Barcelona to acquire the player's services, it appears that the Spanish team has completely settled for signing Marcus Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, who will undoubtedly be the player who will occupy the left wing position. The deal for Nico Williams also fell through before the signing of Marcus Rashford, and now one of the Spanish club's targets, Colombian Luis Diaz, has officially become a Bayern Munich player on a four-year contract until 2029. How much did Bayern Munich pay for the Colombian? According to reliable press reports, most notably from Diario AS, Bayern Munich has spent the full amount of 70 million euros to acquire the services of the talented Colombian player from the English giants. Barcelona had submitted an official offer of no more than 60 million euros, which was rejected by Liverpool. Now, the Colombian will receive 17 million euros annually with Bayern Munich, which is three times his previous salary with Liverpool. "I'm very happy. It means a lot to me to be part of Bayern Munich – it's one of the biggest clubs in the world. I want to help my new team with my style of play and my personality. My goal is to win every possible title, and that's what we will work towards every day as a team" said the Colombian.

Liverpool 3 Yokohama 1: Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni shine but defensive issues remain

Liverpool completed their pre-season tour of Asia with a 3-1 victory over Yokohama F Marinos at Nissan Stadium. The contest came to life with record signing Florian Wirtz celebrating his first goal for the club following his £116 million move from Bayer Leverkusen, cancelling out Asahi Uenaka's opener. Advertisement Arne Slot's youngsters then took centre-stage: Trey Nyoni, 18, turned in an inviting cross from Jeremie Frimpong and then 16-year-old Rio Nguhoma scored an outstanding individual goal as the winger continues to enhance his growing reputation. It was the perfect response to Liverpool's 4-2 defeat to AC Milan in Hong Kong. The squad are heading straight back to Merseyside with their preparations for the new campaign continuing with a double-header against Athletic Bilbao at Anfield on Monday. We dissect the main talking points. Given the chance to shine in Asia, Liverpool's teenage duo of Nguhoma and Nyoni grabbed it with both hands. Senior players and staff have been raving about their talent and they both ended the tour in style with big contributions against Yokohoma. Ngumoha showed why Liverpool are in no rush to buy another left sided attacker following the sale of Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich. Why would you block the pathway when you've got someone so special coming through? Playing in front of more than 70,000 fans, there was no sign of nerves after Nguhoma and Nyoni were introduced for the final half hour. Nyoni is so composed in possession and he made a great run to get on the end of Frimpong's quality cross from the right. The England youth international midfielder was at full stretch as he stuck out his right boot to turn the ball home from close range to put Liverpool 2-1 up on 68 minutes. Then Nguhoma took over as he got the fans off their seats. So quick, so strong, so direct, he tormented Yokohama's tiring backline with his jinxing runs. There was a one-two with Nyoni which ended with Nguhoma forcing a sprawling save. Three minutes from time he got the goal his classy cameo deserved as he skipped past Kosei Suwama and calmly slotted past the keeper (as shown below). The beaming smile showed what it meant to him. He is destined to grace occasions where the stakes are considerably higher but the fearless teenager will never forget this night. 'Rio again showed the quality he has,' Slot told reporters afterwards. 'That is nice for us because we have a lot of very good players but to get some brand new players from the academy is helpful. It gives energy to the team. It is nice to see young players at 16, 17 or 18 impacting the game.' There are plenty of new faces at Liverpool this summer but some things remain reliably the same. Mohamed Salah broke a stack of records as his remarkable haul of 29 goals and 18 assists inspired Slot's side to Premier League title glory in May, winning the the Golden Boot and the Playmaker of the season awards for good measure. Advertisement Now he looks ready to go again. It was Salah who provided most of the injections of quality as Liverpool tried in vain to force a breakthrough before the interval. Inside a minute he clipped a lofted pass into the feet of debutant Hugo Ekitike, who was forced wide and couldn't get a shot away on a tricky playing surface. There was some decent link-up play from Ekitike, who showcased his ability to both drop deep and burst in behind. One audacious backheel from Conor Bradley's pass bobbled wide. The French striker played the opening 45 minutes before being replaced by Darwin Nunez. Salah may have lost some of his old lightning pace but what he's gained is a much greater awareness of the options around him. There was another stunning first-time pass to release Cody Gakpo, who couldn't beat the keeper under pressure. The Dutchman had earlier struck the post after cutting inside from the left. The vision and the execution from Salah was a delight to watch with another perfectly weighted delivery picking out Dominik Szoboszlai's run from deep. Liverpool really should have made more of the service he provided. Predictably, Salah was in the thick of it when Slot's side finally broke through just past the hour mark. After receiving the ball from Curtis Jones, he turned it unselfishly back into his path. Jones let the ball run and Wirtz was on hand to slam home the equaliser. It was the final touch of the night for Liverpool's record signing as a stack of substitutions followed. Wirtz, for his part, went home a million yen (£5,000) richer after being named man of the match. Slot bemoaned how often Liverpool were left exposed on the counter-attack in the defeat to AC Milan and he won't enjoy rewatching how they fell behind at the Nissan Stadium. If there were mitigating circumstances given the personnel operating of position in Hong Kong, the same couldn't be said here. It was a strong Liverpool backline with Milos Kerkez and Conor Bradley either side of centre-backs Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate. When the hosts opened the scoring 10 minutes into the second half, it was far too easy. Ren Kato had too much time to pick a simple pass and nobody tracked the run of Uenaka, who burst in behind and drilled a low shot beyond Mamardashvili which went in off the far post. Mamardashvili started in the absence of Alisson, who Slot confirmed had left the tour to return home to Brazil due to a personal matter. The Georgian No 1 showcased why Liverpool moved so quickly a year ago to secure his services when it became clear that Valencia were ready to cash in. Just before the break Mamardashvili produced a stunning save as he dived full length to his left to claw behind Dean David's goal-bound header. There was another moment of real danger for Liverpool when Van Dijk came to the rescue after an error from Konate. Maybe the heat and the intensity of the training schedule contributed to the defensive vulnerability on this trip, but Slot will know they need to tighten up. There was a hero's reception for Wataru Endo back in his home city of Yokohama. A roar went around the ground when the Japan captain was pictured on the big screen getting ready to come on early in the second half. The noise was even louder when he entered the fray. Substituting him for Van Dijk and giving Endo the captain's armband was a smart move from Slot, who deliberately brought him on separately to the other substitutes so he could soak up the adulation. It meant Endo also conducted the trophy lift as he was presented with the J League World Challenge trophy. After being encouraged by Van Dijk, he walked towards the sea of red behind the goal and held it up to them. 'Wata was probably the best example of someone accepting their role and always being there for the team last season,' Slot said. 'That was a very important reason for us winning the league. He deserved all the credits he got from the Japanese fans.'
