England vs India: Cricket's infuriating 6.42pm rule that meant a day of epic sport ended in farce
Only a five-match Test series can offer 24 days of the most compelling cricket and then cut short the action and come back for a 25th day with the result in the balance and the game nearing its natural thrilling conclusion.

The final Test of one of the best series in years was on a knife-edge at The Oval in south London on Sunday when the umpires and ground-staff decided a short, sharp shower of rain at 5.29pm was enough to rob those spectators of what was building up to be the most exciting and fitting of finales.
England looked to be taking their redefinition of the Test run-chase to another level on the penultimate day by romping towards their improbable target of 374.
Then India threatened to turn the match and the series on its head by dismissing both Harry Brook and Joe Root, who had added a masterful 195 off just 211 balls, and rendering England near strokeless with a Herculean bowling effort.
The stage could not be more perfectly set. England, on 339 for six, needed just 35 more for a 3-1 series win, but where earlier the runs were flowing now they had all but dried up and Jamie Smith and Jamie Overton were struggling to get the ball off the square.
India, meanwhile, were being roared on by their large number of supporters and knew they had only effectively to take another three wickets, with England's injured bowler Chris Woakes in his whites in the dressing room but with his left-arm in a sling.
Bad light and rain seemed only to have brought a temporary stop to proceedings but then it emerged regulations stated play had to resume by 6.42pm, the scheduled close of play.
The rain had stopped and the skies were beginning to clear but, at 6.03pm, head groundsman Lee Fortis, who had clashed with India coach Gautam Gambhir before the game, told the umpires his staff could not clear up the ground in time for play to resume within the next 39 minutes. So that was that.
It is infuriating why that had to be the case. Why could we not delay the resumption a little longer and then try to give spectators who had paid between £95 and £160 for their day at the cricket a proper finish? There seems no explanation other than 'rules are rules'.
That is a desperately bad look for the ultimate form of the game at a time when it is threatened like never before by the rise of short-form cricket and the franchises. Not helped by what appeared to be complete inaction from Fortis and his team in the minutes leading up to the announcement that this absorbing drama would go to a final day that should last less than an hour whoever wins.

It says everything for the remarkable resilience of cricket fans that the majority in the crowd seemed simply to shrug their shoulders, say 'that's cricket for you' and make their way out into the streets of south London. But it is not good enough.
A friend of mine told me his 20-year-old son had only recently been getting into Test cricket, so thrilling has this series been, but was left utterly deflated in front of his TV on Sunday evening when it became clear that play was off for the day.
'What a wasted opportunity,' said my friend, a lifelong cricket fan. 'My son has got into Test cricket big-time this summer but he said, 'What an anti-climax' when they called it off. He can't watch tomorrow so he won't be able to see how it all plays out.'
It was somehow inevitable that as soon as play was called off for the day the weather improved and by 6.45pm or so play would have been perfectly possible.

It does not get dark at this time of year until around 8.30pm and, in any case, there are floodlights at the Oval and all England's major grounds. There should be no reason why play should not continue under artificial light. Test cricket cannot afford a farce like this.
'Still 20 minutes away from possible start time and everyone has their sunglasses on at the train station,' posted former England fast bowler and now commentator Stuart Broad on X. 'Felt the supporters deserved to see a finish to that Test today. Felt a lazy decision to call it off at 6pm in my opinion. I wonder who makes it?'
At least former England captain Sir Alastair Cook saw the bright side. 'This benefits England massively,' said Cook on the BBC's Test Match Special. 'It is a hammer blow for India. The atmosphere would have been unbelievable for India tonight. They were so on top. The only way England could get a run was a leg-bye.'

The crowd at least got most of their money's worth on the fourth day before the powers that be, in their wisdom, robbed them of a finale.
Brook made the best of his 10 Test hundreds, even better than his triple century in Pakistan, and his first in the fourth innings of a Test, reaching three figures off just 91 balls.
It only ended in bizarre fashion when he came down the pitch to Akash Deep and saw his bat fly out of his hands, Rishabh Pant-style, with the ball looping gently to the covers.
And Root made one of the most emotional of his 39 Test hundreds, taking out of his pocket one of the white headbands that have been made for this Test in memory of his mentor, the late great Graham Thorpe, and looking to the skies in tribute.
But India refused to be beaten. Where once an England win looked a formality and it was all about the ease with which they were racing to the second highest run-chase in their history, everything suddenly changed, as only it can do in Test cricket.
At the centre of that was the indefatigable figure of Mohammed Siraj, the last fast bowler standing in this series on either side to play in all five Tests once Woakes went down injured on the first day here.
It looked as though Siraj had cost his side victory when he gave Brook a life on 19, treading on the boundary foam after catching him and instead handing him another six.
But Siraj kept running in all day and added another 26 overs to his exhaustive tally in this series while playing the role of his former captain Virat Kohli in whipping up the Indian supporters in the crowd to provide more noise.
We can only come back on Monday now to see which one of these sides will come out on top and whether England will have their best series win under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum.
Or whether India will have what would be a deserved share of the series. It is just a crying shame we did not know the outcome by now.

RB Leipzig contact Liverpool over Harvey Elliott transfer
RB Leipzig have contacted Liverpool over the potential signing of Harvey Elliott. While talks are not currently at an advanced stage, discussions between the clubs are ongoing. The Athletic reported on July 1 that Leipzig were among the clubs interested in a move for Elliott, with Liverpool placing a transfer valuation for the midfielder in excess of £40million plus a buy-back option, or above £50m without one. Advertisement Leipzig believe the 22-year-old would be a direct replacement for Xavi Simons, who could leave the German club in the closing weeks of the transfer window. The Athletic reported on July 29 that Leipzig were in discussions with Chelsea over the potential sale of Dutch international Simons; the 22-year-old scored 10 Bundesliga goals and provided six assists in 2024-25. Elliott started just two Premier League matches for Liverpool in 2024-25, both of which came after Arne Slot's side has already secured the title. He made 28 appearances in total over all competitions, registering five goals and three assists. The central midfielder said in June that he was wary of 'wasting years of my career' due to his lack of game-time at Anfield. 'Nothing makes me want to leave,' Elliott said. 'I love the club, I love the fans, the team. I support them as well. But as I said, most importantly, it's just about what's best for my career.' Elliott was Player of the Tournament at this summer's Under-21 European Championship, as England sealed a second successive title with victory over Germany in June's final. The midfielder scored five goals, including one in the final and two in the semi-final defeat of the Netherlands, as one of only two England players who was a member of both the victorious 2023 and 2025 squads under Lee Carsley. Elliott has made 147 appearances for Liverpool since signing from Fulham in 2019, and spent the 2020-21 campaign on loan at Blackburn Rovers. The England Under-21 international has won six trophies during his time at Anfield. Additional reporting from David Ornstein (TOMAS BENEDIKOVIC/AFP via Getty Images)

Liverpool Are Prepared To Launch A Fresh Move For This Crystal Palace Defender: Should Slot Snap Him Up?
In a recent interview with Football Insider, former scout Mick Brown revealed that Liverpool are prepared to launch a fresh move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. Brown said, 'All of the talk at Liverpool has been about Isak at the moment. 'But from what I'm told, Marc Guehi is still very much on their radar and I'd expect them to make a move before the end of the window. 'I think they regard Guehi as just as important as Isak in terms of the benefit to their squad. 'They're not totally convinced about Konate, he makes too many errors and could be on his way out when his contract runs out next year. 'They've let Jarell Quansah go, and Joe Gomez isn't going to be the long-term answer at centre-back. 'If they're going for every trophy available to them, they can't afford to take chances at the back, and Guehi would represent a very good addition for them. 'He'd be a top signing and I expect they'll be ready to make a move at some stage.' Guehi's Excellent Form In The Premier League Last Season Guehi had a great season at the London club recently as he put in a lot of influential displays for them on the defensive end of the field. The England international played in 44 matches for the Eagles in the previous campaign, netting three goals and securing two assists across all competitions. The 25-year-old gave a good account of himself when defending inside his half after he made 61 tackles, 55 blocks and 28 interceptions in Premier League football. He was even careful when distributing the ball from the back, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 83.5% in the English top tier (stats via LONDON, ENGLAND – FEBRUARY 15: Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace looks on prior to the Premier League match between Crystal Palace FC and Everton FC at Selhurst Park on February 15, 2025 in London, England. (Photo by) Should Liverpool Boss Arne Slot Snap Guehi Up This Summer? Guehi is a good tackler of the ball and doesn't mind clearing the danger when needed. He can scan the danger well to make some crucial interceptions for his side on the defensive third of the pitch. The English sensation can even play his way out from the back. He is currently one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League. Therefore, it will be a great move for Liverpool if they can lure Guehi to Anfield this off-season. Guehi would no doubt enhance the quality of Arne Slot's defence. He could even go on to form a solid partnership with Virgil Van Dijk at the Merseyside club. At 25, Guehi will only get better in the coming years. Thus, the Reds should focus on snapping him up before the end of this transfer period.

Each of the absentees will need to be replaced. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas home range 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the away range TODAY LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! We've already seen Hugo Ekitike join to help replace Darwin Nunez when he moves on and Diogo Jota's passing has sadly meant that another striker could join - Alexander Isak is highly favoured. Luis Diaz's move to Bayern Munich might result in Malick Fofana at Lyon being approached, although Cody Gakpo will be given an even bigger role in his absence and Rio Ngumoha's extraordinary performances throughout pre-season have given the Englishman hopes of some senior minutes. Since it's likely that Chiesa will leave, someone has already been identified as his replacement. Liverpool already have Chiesa's replacement Playing as Mohamed Salah's understudy was always going to be a difficult job. At times, you feel there might be an opportunity to play a substantial role in the team, but if you have a season where the Egyptian delivers 57 goal contributions, then you might feel shut-out on the sidelines. Slot didn't really know what to do with Chiesa last season and regular minutes are going to be essential if he has plans of making Italy's World Cup squad next summer. A move is understandable. Now that Salah has signed a new two-year deal with the club, you would expect him to have another main role in the team this season, which would be a spanner in the Italian's plans. But if you have a developing young player as his understudy at right-wing, then things start to make more sense. The 33-year-old Egyptian will need to be replaced eventually as he starts to slow down towards the end of his career, and having his successor develop alongside him would be a beneficial move. As such, it seems logical for Ben Doak to be promoted to the first team after a number of loan moves. He spent last season on loan with Middlesbrough in the Championship and he played a particularly extensive role, making featuring for 1787 minutes and delivering three goals and seven assists. In addition, he was heavily reported to have put most of the defenders he faced on skids, dribbling past them with relative ease, even despite him being marked by three opposition players at times. At Anfield on Monday afternoon, when the Reds played Athletic Bilbao in a pre-season friendly, he scored from a tight angle and delivered a pin-point ball into Ngumoha to assist the second goal.
