Were the Friends even human? Watching the old shows again, they certainly don't breed like the rest of us

I've started watching this great fantasy series from the mid-90s and early 00s – it's called Friends. It follows a group of humanoid characters who treat childbirth as a social occasion, wear full makeup postpartum and never look after their babies. The fantasy element is very clever – so subtle in fact that it is only now, watching it decades later, as a parent myself, that I even noticed it.
Perhaps back in the 90s the otherworldly nature of Phoebe Buffay waiting to give birth to triplets in a room chock-full of her wise-cracking friends, despite it being a high-risk pregnancy, was understood. Maybe the way that Ross Geller's baby Ben is delivered under a sheet, by an obstetrician apparently working blind, was a well-known speculative fiction trope back then. Possibly when it originally aired, parents were simply amazed by the special effects involved when Rachel Green was shown sitting in a coffee shop gossiping about her love life, three weeks after giving birth, in full makeup and blow-dry, high heels, a pair of size 10 jeans – and entirely without her baby. Whatever was going on, no one at the time seemed fazed by this uncanny valley where babies breastfeed just once in their life, never get ill and are put behind glass in hospital nurseries to be glanced at by visiting relatives who then have sex in cupboards.
Luckily, television depictions of birth and parenting have come a long way since I was a child. And I was paying attention, even then. For instance, I remember the scene from Cold Feet in which Karen stormed into her husband David's office demanding that he hire her a nanny (nannies are a big feature of these shows, you will notice). What I didn't remember, and only spotted on a recent rewatch, is that in a preceding scene Karen is shown tearing her hair out at the kitchen table, while trying to feed porridge to her toddler. Except the toddler has a dummy in his mouth, rendering him entirely unable to eat any porridge even if he wanted to.
This sort of continuity error might seem small-scale to some of you, but it's the sort of glaring misunderstanding of early parent life that makes me wonder if anyone on that writing, directing and production team was regularly feeding their own child.
In recent years, the number of television shows showing something a little closer to what I recognise as pregnancy, birth and early child-wrangling have exploded: Motherland, The Letdown, Trying, Catastrophe, Better Things and Breeders have all made some effort to involve a little domestic labour in their plotlines. Some of them let the babies actually cry and breastfeed. Occasionally the parents look tired and can't make social arrangements. Sometimes, the children in these shows even have lines.
I have no doubt that this is, in part at least, because there are more women writing, directing and producing television today. And before you say it, yes, I know Marta Kauffman created Friends and I also know that she has three children. But as I've already pointed out, Friends is a fantasy series. It's magical realism. Kauffman knows that, I know that and I'm sure Lisa Kudrow, who got pregnant during season four, knows that too.
I'm not so oblivious to the needs of television drama and comedy to think that you can make a 20-minute episode showing a woman sitting in a dark room at 3am trying to guide a nipple into her baby's ear, in a delirium of exhaustion while wondering idly if she's got threadworms again. But as books such as Becky Barnicoat's new graphic novel Cry When the Baby Cries have shown, the comedy and drama involved in pregnancy and parenthood are right there, in heart-rending, breathtaking detail, if we just allow people to show them.
Maybe books have always done it better. About 40 years after they were published, the classic Jill Murphy children's books Five Minutes' Peace, Peace at Last and Whatever Next! still speak more directly to the experience of being a parent than many film and television depictions we've had since.
Mrs Large from Five Minutes' Peace may be a bipedal marmalade-eating elephant living in the suburbs. But she's still a more realistic parent than Rachel Green.

Friends fans have spotted 'new' mistakes in various episodes of the well-loved TV show - but people say there's a technical explanation for it and it only adds to the charm Friends fans have spotted a 'production mistake' 26 years after its sixth season premiered to its loyal audience. The cult classic, starring Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer, has been a firm favourite for three decades. ‌ But it seems some fans are only just spotting mistakes made in its production all these years later - but some viewers argue there's a "valid" reason for it. In a TikTok video, user @ pointed out how you can see a cameraman during a scene in season six, episode 13, when Matthew Perry, who plays Chandler Bing, and Courteney Cox, who portrays Monica Geller, are sitting on a sofa in her apartment. ‌ The cameraman is seen standing behind the actors in the kitchen capturing the friendship group in conversation in the sitting room. ‌ But this isn't the only time a member of the production team has been caught n camera in the series as another viewer claims one is visible in season six, episode seven too. Explaining why it has taken so many fans so long to notice this mistake, one user commented: "It's because aspect ratios on TVs have changed. On an old SRT 4:3 ratio, you wouldn't see him. But on a 16:9 you do." Another user added: "In S6 E7 when Chandler was cleaning the apartment. I also noticed the camera, when Chandler ran to the coffee table to move them. 10:28." A third user said: "In one of the holiday episodes there's a shot where you can see the stage and not the set." Another user added: "Friends is my favourite show but I've watched so many times I spot so mistakes like shadows and door." ‌ One more user said: "There is also a fault in the episode where the Gellers celebrate their wedding anniversary, after Jack stops talking, they swap to his body double!" It comes after fans noticed something unusual about Rachel, played by Jennifer Aniston, in season nine, episode four. For a few seconds in The One with the Sharks, Rachel is briefly replaced mid-scene by someone else. ‌ About 12 minutes and 20 seconds into the episode, Monica and Rachel are in Monica's apartment, talking about unusual fetishes their previous partners have had. Joey, portrayed by Matt LeBlanc, then enters and heads towards them, explaining that he thinks he has slept with his date before - but she doesn't remember him. The three sit down at the kitchen table to continue the conversation and at this point, Rachel can be clearly seen with curly hair and wearing a yellow top. As the camera moves to focus on Monica, eagle-eyed viewers might notice that a different woman is next to her in the bottom left side of the screen, with straight hair and a dark blue top. But if you blink, you'll miss it as a few seconds later, the camera changes to focus on Rachel and the stand-in is no where to be seen.

There is a reason the sitcom Friends was so popular from the off and became such a juggernaut so quickly. The writing was brilliant, and the six actors in it were astonishing individually and even better together. Comedy is alchemical, and they transmuted gold into pure joy. Matthew Perry formed one sixth of the troupe as Chandler Bing. Every actor had their particular strength and his was perhaps to be the nimblest, the most alive to the currents crisscrossing any scene he was in. He was the only one of the cast allowed in the writers' room to contribute, and from that maybe we can infer he was the most naturally funny off set too. Certainly his timing, even in the extraordinary company he kept, was immaculate. And now we know that the rumours of addiction that plagued him during the filming and broadcast of later seasons were true. As he put it in the autobiography he published in 2022, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, when Chandler was overweight, Perry was on the booze; when he was skinny, it was pills. But it was almost always something. A year after the book came out, Perry, 54, was found dead – drowned in his pool after suffering the acute effects of ketamine use. Matthew Perry: A Hollywood Tragedy, an hour-long documentary imported from the US by ITV, covers this sad story much as you might expect. There is footage from Friends' glory days, plus telling footage of the battery of paparazzi yelling for his attention every time he stepped out in public. There are clips of interviews with his castmates lauding his talents back in the day, and grief-stricken ones from his great friend Hank Azaria and others after his death. Azaria is on the verge of tears as he remembers how Perry would floor his friends with laughter when he was healthy, and how so many of those who loved him felt they had lost him years before to his demons. There are excerpts from the audio version of his book read by Perry himself, which supply glimpses of his inner torment and memories of the aspects of his childhood to which he attributes his vulnerability to addiction; and portions of interviews where you see his charm and some of his pain. There is not much of his work in Friends on display, but such was – and remains – the pervasiveness of the show that perhaps it wasn't felt necessary to remind us. Morgan Fairchild, who played Chandler's mother in the series, contributes some nice and not excessively saccharine memories of him as an actor and of the difficulty in making a difference to someone who is not yet ready to deal with his problems. Still, it feels like the background is being skimped to get to the 'good' stuff: the criminal investigation sparked by his death and the recent charges brought against five people for supplying the ketamine that led to Perry's death. Again, this is covered much as you might expect. Talking heads from the world of entertainment journalism are interwoven with accounts from retired LAPD officers explaining how police procedures work, and the district attorney in charge of the case is on hand in the sharpest of suits to explain how they discovered – and you're hardly going to believe this, I know – a network of suppliers in Los Angeles that were able to get a celebrity as much of his chosen narcotic as he asked for, often at inflated prices. One of the doctors allegedly involved in the chain messages another: 'I wonder how much this moron will pay … Let's find out.' The headshaking at this lack of respect between a man and his cash cow becomes almost comical. Amid the accumulating disingenuousness, the documentary does have the grace to include the name of Cody McLaury, whose death has also been attributed to ketamine supposedly supplied by one of the five suspects in Perry's case, and to include a comment from one of the contributors that it was surely largely because of Perry's fame that a criminal investigation was launched into the actor's death at all. The film ends, however, with unexpected delicacy, closing with the shot of a card left with flowers at his home by one of Perry's many fans. 'Thank you for making me laugh,' it says. 'I'm glad Chandler got the happy ending you deserved.' A grace note Perry surely earned. Matthew Perry: A Hollywood Tragedy aired on ITV1 and is on ITVX now. In the US, it is available to stream on Peacock.
