US rugby star Alev Kelter gets 3-match ban for stamping on opponent's head

United States women's rugby star Alev Kelter was handed a three-match ban on Tuesday for stamping on the head of an opponent in a test match against Australia.
Kelter, a three-time U.S. Olympic representative in rugby sevens, was sent off in the 79th minute of the Pacific Four Series match on Saturday after the referee reviewed footage showing Kelter stamping forcefully on the head of Australia center Georgie Friedrichs.
In comments captured by television microphones, referee Aimee Barrett-Theron said Kelter would be getting a red card 'because this is thuggery, it is deliberate and it is very dangerous foul play.'
Kelter appeared in front of a three-person panel at a disciplinary committee hearing on Tuesday and accepted she committed an act of foul play, World Rugby said in a statement.
The committee accepted, however, evidence provided by Kelter that she did not intend to contact the head of Friedrichs.
'The committee found that the player was not deliberately targeting the head of the Australian player,' World Rugby said, 'but rather was reckless in her actions (as she accepted).
'The contact to the head was glancing or grazing rather than direct and targeted.'
The committee applied a six-match ban that was reduced to three matches because of mitigating circumstances, such as her disciplinary record, early acknowledgment of foul play and clear remorse.
Kelter will be suspended for the test against New Zealand in the Pacific Four Series on Saturday, as well as two matches for U.S. club Bay Breakers.
Kelter won a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics last year. She previously played ice hockey and soccer for the University of Wisconsin.

VICTORIA - Teen sensation Summer McIntosh has broken yet another record at the Canadian Swimming Trials. The 18-year-old from Toronto swam the 400-metre individual medley in four minutes 23.65 seconds, breaking the world record 4:24.38 she set at the Olympic trials in Toronto last May. It's the third time McIntosh has set a new world record at this year's Canadian trials, after she posted a new mark in the 200m individual medley on Monday and in the 400m freestyle on Saturday. She also broke her own Canadian records in the 800m freestyle Sunday, finishing in 8:05.07 — nearly five seconds faster than her previous time — and in the 200m butterfly on Tuesday. McIntosh also holds the world record in the 200m butterfly. She won three golds and one silver at the Paris Olympics last summer, becoming the first Canadian to ever take three golds at a single Games. It's a competition of different athletic competitions between the OSU staff and the players, and so far it's been a hoot to watch it all go down. The staff got out to an early lead, but the players won three events in a row to take a 3-1 lead before the older guys trimmed the lead to 3-2. And now, after the latest event, a three-point shooting contest between OSU staffer Matt Guerrieri and wide receiver Bryson Rodgers, things are all tied up. That's because Guerrieri battled through some suspect shots to bury the one that mattered, giving the staff the win and even the competition at 3-3.
