Family of Ecuadorian soccer player rescued after being kidnapped
QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — The family of Ecuadorian soccer player Jackson Rodríguez was rescued after being kidnapped from their home in the coastal city of Guayaquil, police authorities reported on Friday.
Rodriguez, 26,
hid under his bed
while his 24-year-old wife and five-year-old son were taken on Wednesday by four 'hooded and heavily armed individuals' who forced their way into the home in the Mucho Lote neighborhood.
The wife and son received medical attention following their release and were safe, police commander Pablo Dávila said.
The kidnappers demanded $500,000 for the release of the wife and son but the family refused to pay, Dávila added. Rodriguez is a left back who plays for first division club Emelec.
After police operations late Thursday, officers located the pair in the popular neighborhood of 'El Fortín' in the northwest part of the city. The area is considered one of the most dangerous, a place where 22 people were massacred in March.
Guayaquil is 270 kilometers (170 miles) southwest of the capital, Quito.
The kidnapping occurred amid a state of emergency declared 10 days ago by the government in nine areas of the country, including the province of Guayas, to which Guayaquil belongs. The measure allows the mobilization of security forces in those territories to combat the operations of organized crime groups, which authorities blame for the wave of violence.
Insecurity and crime have plagued Ecuador for four years, with an increase in the first few months of the year, according to the government. From January to March, 2,345 violent deaths were reported, 742 of them in Guayaquil.
The port city is considered one of the most dangerous areas in the country. From those ports, illegal drug shipments are sent to Europe, Central America, and the United States, according to authorities.
Other athletes have been targeted in the past. Last December, Liga de Quito soccer player Pedro Perlaza was kidnapped in Esmeraldas, 182 kilometers northwest of Quito, and rescued a few days later.

So far, no official report has been released on the senator's condition. A suspected shooter has been captured, Bogotá Mayor Carlos Galán said on the social platform X. But the federal government said it was offering a reward for the capture of those responsible. 'Respect life, that's the red line,' Colombian President Gustavo Petro said in a message posted on his X account. Shortly after making the post, Petro canceled a planned trip to France 'due to the seriousness of the events,' according to a presidential statement. The game came back from a major ten-year hiatus last year with the release of "College Football 25." You can thank Name, Image and Likeness, and the ability to compensate individual players for the inclusion in the game for the renaissance, and we all celebrated. Now, as things evolve, it appears as though schools will be paid differently for their participation in "College Football 26." Players were already compensated last season and will continue to be so with an elevated amount this season. But for this year, teams won't get a fee based on tier levels from the AP's Top 25 poll, but instead the pay will be tied to how often each of the 136 teams in the game is used, at least according to a report from Matt Liberman. The next iteration of the game is set to be released on July 10, and if those reports are true, Ohio State should benefit greatly. Though raw numbers aren't available, the Buckeyes have arguably the biggest and most followed fanbase in the sport, and there's no doubt that there's a lot of Scarlet and Gray on video game screens across the video game universe. 'For each CFB product released by EA SPORTS, we (CLC Learfield) will provide a percentage for each institution based on the games played for that institution as a percentage of the total games played across all institutions," a document obtained by Liberman stated. "This percentage of games played will become the final allocation percentage for each school that will be applied to the total gross royalties for all institutions received.'
