2025 Big Ten betting guide: Odds, picks, and predictions for Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, and more
The Big Ten was forever changed by realignment.
The arrival of Oregon, USC, and UCLA not only added to the conference's depth, but it also turned the Big Ten into a coast-to-coast competition that feels awfully like a professional league.
Oddsmakers project that the Big Ten will be top-heavy once again in 2025, with Ohio State, Penn State, and Oregon sitting as the three clear favorites, with Michigan lurking after a terrific close to their 2024 campaign.
The odds don't look too different from how they sat entering the 2024 season, which ended with Oregon winning the Big Ten title over Penn State, just a few weeks before Ohio State won the National Championship.
Will things look similar in 2025? Let's dive in.
2025 Big Ten odds
Team Odds Ohio State +190 Penn State +240 Oregon +350 Michigan +700 USC 18/1 Indiana 35/1 Nebraska 35/1 Iowa 40/1 Illinois 40/1 Washington 50/1 Minnesota 125/1 Wisconsin 150/1 Michigan State 150/1 UCLA 150/1 Rutgers 250/1 Maryland 300/1 Northwestern 500/1 Purdue 500/1 Odds via BetMGM
The Favorites
Ohio State is the defending national champion, but the Buckeyes have had to deal with a lot of turnover this offseason.
Not only did several key contributors move on, but Ohio State will also have a new coordinator on both sides of the ball.
Julian Sayin will get the first say as the starting quarterback for Ryan Day, and while there will always be questions about a new starter, Sayin, a former blue-chip recruit from Alabama and has the best wide receiver in the country, Jeremiah Smith, on his side.
Ohio State comes into the season as the No. 3 team in the AP Poll, but Bill Connelly has them at No. 1 in his SP+ rankings.
3 Penn State head coach James Franklin meets with the media.

The Buckeyes are the team to beat, but there are just too many heavyweights to back them at this price.
The same goes for the other favorites.
There are a lot of sharp bettors out there who are going to start the season with Penn State as the No. 1 or No. 2 team in their power rankings, but the Nittany Lions have yet to shake the bridesmaid reputation under James Franklin.
You will need to win several big games to win the Big Ten, and Franklin doesn't do that with any regularity. Pass.
Oregon has gone 25-3 in the past two years, but the Ducks rank 109th in returning production and will be breaking in another new quarterback. Talent is there, the coach looks like a star, but that's too many holes to fill when you're dealing out a +350 in this setup.
The shine is back on Michigan, thanks to a strong finish to 2024 and the arrival of highly-touted freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood, but beating out Ohio State, Penn State, and Oregon (as well as some of the other teams below them in the pecking order) is a tall ask of a freshman. Especially with so much turnover on offense.
Dark horses
USC is the fifth-favorite in the Big Ten, but the Trojans seem to have their eye on 2026 thanks to a program-changing recruiting class.
Nonetheless, Lincoln Reilly has a veteran-laden roster with a high floor for this season, but the ceiling doesn't seem high enough when you look at some of the teams being offered at much bigger prices.
In fact, while you're stretching to find reasons to back USC at their odds, I think you could make a pretty solid argument for any of the next five teams (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, and Washington) as good value bets to win the Big Ten.
Picking between them may feel like splitting hairs, but I've landed on Nebraska (40/1) and Illinois (40/1) for similar reasons.
3 Dylan Raiola of Nebraska in action against Iowa.
AP
For the Huskers, this is Year 3 under Matt Rhule and Year 2 with Dylan Raiola under center.
Raiola's freshman campaign featured plenty of bumps, but that's to be expected, especially since he was leading an inexperienced offense. Another season under the entire unit's belt should be a massive step forward.
Just as important is Nebraska's schedule. The Huskers are 6.5-point favorites over Cincinnati in Week 1, and things don't get too choppy until they host Michigan in Week 4.
If the Huskers come out on top in that game, they stand a pretty good chance of being 10-0 or 9-1 when they travel to Beaver Stadium on Nov. 22.
Like Nebraska, Illinois drew a great schedule for 2025.
The Illini open conference play with a tricky one against Indiana, but a win over the Hoosiers could set them up to crash the gates with Ohio State as the only true heavyweight on their schedule after that.
Betting on College Football?
And it's not just the schedule that boosts Illinois' chances this year, they are also legitimately building towards something under Brett Bielema.
The Illini won 10 games for the first time in 23 years in 2024, and they lead the conference in returning production, highlighted by quarterback Luke Altmyer.
Long shots
There's bound to be a lot of cannon fodder in an 18-team conference, and the Big Ten certainly isn't short on pedestrian teams.
Ignoring Purdue, Maryland, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, we'll focus on the long shots that have some upside to cause a stir, likely by going over their win total or pulling the big upset in the Big Ten.
Northwestern's schedule is a bear, but they should see some marked improvement on offense with Preston Stone (formerly of SMU) under center. A stingy defense with a high-ceiling quarterback could put Oregon, Penn State, and/or Michigan on upset alert.
3 Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano on the sidelines.
Robert Sabo for NY Post
UCLA will also pin its hopes on a blue-chip quarterback. Nico Iamaleava joins the Bruins from Tennessee and could win games on his own, but there's so much turnover on this roster that it's almost impossible to get a read on DeShaun Foster's bunch.
And then there's Rutgers, which, so long as Greg Schiano is in charge, will defy preseason expectations and overachieve.
The Scarlet Knights should be a real thorn in the side, especially on defense, for the big boys.
Best Bets for the Big Ten
Nebraska to win the Big Ten (40/1, bet365)
Illinois to win the Big Ten (40/1, BetMGM)

Urban Meyer says NFL should suspend Jim Harbaugh for NCAA violations at Michigan
Count Urban Meyer among those who thinks the NFL should punish Jim Harbaugh following his tenure at Michigan football. The former Ohio State football coach said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell should hand down a suspension to Harbaugh — now coach of the NFL's Los Angeles Chargers — due to the penalties arising from the Connor Stalions sign-stealing scandal. Meyer, who coached Ohio State from 2012 through partway through the 2018 season, referenced former Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel as a precedent during an appearance on The Triple Option podcast on Wednesday, Aug. 20. "There's an elephant in the room here that no one's talking about," Meyer said. "When Tressel was fired by Ohio State and he was given a suspension. Roger Goodell, commissioner of the National Football League, came out and said that we're going to honor that suspension. "[Tressel] went to the Indianapolis Colts to work in the replay room. The Colts, because of the respect they had for the NCAA and the suspension, suspended Jim Tressel, so he was unable to perform his duties for the first six games of the year." Tressel resigned from Ohio State in 2011 after an NCAA investigation found OSU players received improper benefits, including quarterback Terrelle Pryor. Tressel then went to work for the Indianapolis Colts as a game-day advisor but, upon his suggestion to the Colts' leadership, did not begin his tenure with the team until the seventh game of the season, honoring the suspension from the NCAA. While Goodell did not hand down Tressel's suspension, he did support it. "I support that decision. I think that's a wise one," Goodell said at the time. "I think it was clear that if they didn't take an appropriate action, I would have taken appropriate action." However, Meyer does not believe a suspension for Harbaugh is coming. "Any chance that Roger Goodell and the NFL, of course not. I don't know why," Meyer said. Harbaugh was suspended for one year and given a four-year show-cause order by the NCAA in 2024 after he was found to have demonstrated both 'unethical conduct' and a failure to promote 'an atmosphere of compliance." The show-cause order is effective from Aug. 7, 2024 through Aug. 6, 2028, and he would face a one-year suspension if he decided to leave the NFL for another college job in that window. Harbaugh has since received an additional 10-year show cause, which will take effect on Aug. 7, 2028. Harbaugh led the Wolverines to the 2023 College Football Playoff championship before leaving to coach the Chargers. Los Angeles went 11-6 in the first season under Harbaugh, losing in the AFC wild card game to the Houston Texans.

Meet Ethan Robinson, cornerback whose INT clinched win for Miami Dolphins over Detroit Lions
Cornerback Ethan Robinson was the unlikely hero of the Miami Dolphins' 24-17 victory over the Detroit Lions. Or maybe he wasn't so unlikely to play the role. Robinson sealed the victory with an athletic interception on the Miami 20-yard line with 22 seconds left. He leaped for the ball and managed to hang onto it when many players might have been content to just bat it down. Miami Dolphins Stock Up: Quarterbacks Zach Wilson, Quinn Ewers Dolphins backup QBs, Zach Wilson, Quinn Ewers, show progress against Lions | D'Angelo But in an archived interview with maybe Robinson telegraphed this play. Asked about what stands out on his film, Robinson said this: 'The two things I feel like stand out the most about my film is my ability to play the ball in the air and generate havoc that way, and my ability to tackle.' The Lions had driven down the field, threatening to tie or even win the game (we all know coach Dan Campbell calls an aggressive game, so why not go for two?). Speaking to Miami's WTVJ-Channel 4 after being the Lions, Robinson said, 'I just got up, tried to make a play. Got my blitz time right, saw the angle of the quarterback's arm.' Robinson was joined by a throng of his teammates as he galloped down the field in celebration. 'It felt great with the game on the line,' he said. After delaying their NFL dreams, No. 2 Penn State's stars are chasing an elusive national title
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The longer Penn State quarterback Drew Allar weighed his options, the more he thought how sweet it would be to bring a national championship to Happy Valley. After No. 2 Penn State's down-to-the-wire loss to Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff semifinal last season, the allure of unfinished business outweighed professional prospects for the rocket-armed senior who'll lead one of college football's deepest and most experienced teams. 'I know how much better I want to be as a player and leave my mark on Penn State and obviously accomplish the thing that we came close to last year but came up short in,' Allar said. He'll be joined by 15 returning starters who won a program-best 13 games last season. Star running backs Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen, and standout defensive linemen Dani Dennis-Sutton and Zane Durant also opted to delay their NFL careers to chase the program's first NCAA championship since 1986. Now in his 12th season, coach James Franklin understands the expectations of a fanbase weary of playing second-fiddle to Ohio State or Michigan year after year. 'We were a few points and a few drives away from playing for the National Championship and people were pissed,' Franklin said. 'That's what you sign up for when you come to Penn State, and so those expectations are always really high.' That's why Franklin signed Jim Knowles away from Ohio State after the veteran defensive coordinator helped lead the Buckeyes to last season's championship over Oregon, the team that edged Penn State in the Big Ten finale. 'When you look at all of our personnel, not just the players, but the staff and players, it's the best combination that we've had in my 12 years here,' Franklin said. 'The depth, the experience, the talent is impressive.' In the trenches The Nittany Lions are big and deep along the offensive and defensive lines. Sixth-year center Nick Dawkins will be flanked by guards Olaivavega Ioane and Drew Shelton while Anthony Donkoh and Nolan Rucci bookend as tackles. The group combined for 60 starts, helped generate 202 rushing yards per game and mostly kept Allar upright last season. Meanwhile, Dennis-Sutton and Durant combined for 24 of the defense's 119 tackles for loss and 11 1/2 of its 44 sacks. Through the air Second-year offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki wants to get more receivers involved. Penn State's leading wideout caught just 46 passes a year ago while star tight end Tyler Warren accounted for 106 catches. With Warren playing on Sundays now, Kotelnicki is looking for transfers Kyron Hudson (USC), Devonte Ross (Troy) and Trebor Peña (Syracuse) to help veteran Liam Clifford on the outside. Ross caught 129 balls for 1,618 yards and 14 touchdowns in three years for the Trojans. Peña had 84 of his 109 career catches for the Orange last fall and led the team with nine touchdowns. 'It's going to be really important coming out of the first three games that we feel like we really know what we have with those three guys and how we can use them,' Franklin said. Linebacker U With star linebacker Abdul Carter now a New York Giant, all eyes will be on junior Tony Rojas to lead Linebacker U's linebacker corps early. Knowles can't wait to watch him, especially considering Rojas sat out spring practice after having shoulder surgery. Yes, he was banged up for most of his coming out season where he tied for the team lead with three interceptions, was fifth in total tackles and added a sack. 'Very impressed,' Knowles said. 'He seems to have developed physically in the offseason. He's picked things up quickly which is tough to do when you don't get the reps on field.' The schedule The Nittany Lions have home games against Nevada (Aug. 30), Florida International (Sept. 6) and Villanova (Sept. 13) to start. They're idle before hosting Oregon on Sept. 27 in a rematch of last season's Big Ten championship game. Northwestern (Oct. 11), Indiana (Nov. 8) and Nebraska (Nov. 22) all visit Beaver Stadium while trips to UCLA (Oct. 4), Iowa (Oct. 18), Ohio State (Nov. 1), Michigan State (Nov. 15) and Rutgers (Nov. 29) await.
