Scuba divers participate in marine cleanup drive in Andamans

News18a day ago
Port Blair, Jul 20 (PTI) Concerned over plastic waste contaminating the marine environment, 24 scuba divers, including over 10 women, undertook a marine cleanup drive at North Bay Island in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, officials said.
The scuba cleanup drive was organised on Saturday by the tourism department under the banner of 'Women's Dive Day 2025' with assistance from various dive associations and centres at North Bay Island, which is famous for coral reefs, snorkeling and scuba diving.
Similar events were also organised at Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island) and Shaheed Dweep (Neil Island).
Speaking to PTI, Tourism Secretary Jyoti Kumari said, 'We have organised special diving sessions for women participants. We would like to express our gratitude to various scuba dive centers for offering exclusive dive experiences on a complimentary basis to women participants." 'All the diver teams at North Bay, Swaraj Dweep, and Shaheed Dweep carried out underwater cleanup missions, reaffirming their commitment towards marine conservation and sustainable tourism practices," she said.
Niharika Bhatt, Indian Reserve Battalion commandant and Superintendent of Police of Police Marine Force, also took part in the cleanup drive.
'I started diving last year and have completed the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) basic and advance diving courses. In Andaman and Nicobar Islands, there are world-class diving destinations with warm waters, corals and marine life. Diving is an exciting water sport that creates awareness about ocean conservation and protecting marine natural heritage," she said.
'Diving as a sport will help women gain confidence and break mental barriers. Such events will go a long way in promoting diving as well as creating awareness about marine ecology among the locals and tourists," Bhatt said.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration has enforced a complete ban on small plastic bottles as part of its drive to save marine ecology.
This year, the forest department has already collected over 50,000 kg of marine plastic waste in the archipelago and this waste has been traced to around 20 countries, officials said. PTI SN SN ACD

Alia Bhatt Is Ranbir Kapoor's 'Twirl Girl' In Loved-Up Video From London Holiday

Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor vacationed in London with their daughter Raha. Alia shared a joyful video with Ranbir. Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor, amid their busy shooting schedules, recently took a quick vacation in London with their daughter, Raha. The Gangubai Kathiawadi actor, who often shares updates from her daily life, limited her social media presence in London. But looks like she saved the best for later. Alia, on Monday, dropped a beautiful video featuring herself and partial glimpses of Ranbir. Holding her husband's hand, Alia looked elated as she flaunted her many outfits from the vacation, twirling in the video. What didn't go unnoticed was how happy she looked. Watch the video here: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Alia Bhatt 💛 (@aliaabhatt) In London, the couple posed for photos with fans. On July 14, the family was photographed at a private airport in Mumbai. They didn't greet the paps stationed outside the airport and quickly hopped inside the car. Paps also avoided clicking front-facing pictures of Raha after the celebrity couple requested them not to click their daughter following Saif Ali Khan's stabbing incident earlier this year. Ranbir Kapoor was seen holding onto Raha tightly in his arms at the Mumbai airport. The two-year-old had her back towards the camera. The Ramayana actor wore his signature cap, accompanied by wife Alia Bhatt at the airport. She was seen wearing a denim jacket. The celebrity couple had their sunglasses on. Meanwhile, Ranbir Kapoor's London visit comes just days after the teaser for his highly anticipated movie, Ramayana, was released. The teaser began with the origins – the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva who govern the world. Featuring impressive animation, the video then introduced characters from Ramayana – Lord Rama portrayed by Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Yash as Ravana. The film also stars Sunny Deol, Ravi Dubey, and others. 'Ten years of Aspiration. Relentless Conviction to bring the Greatest Epic of all time to the World. An outcome through a collaboration of some of the world's best to ensure that Ramayana is presented with the greatest amount of Reverence and Respect. Welcome to the Beginning. Let's Celebrate the IMMORTAL story of Rama v/s Ravana. Our Truth. Our History," wrote the makers while sharing the first look. Apart from this, Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt are currently shooting for their second film together, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Love & War, after Brahmastra in 2022. The film also stars Vicky Kaushal. It is reportedly set for release in March 2026. Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Centre plans 51 cruise circuits across 14 states, 3 UTs by 2027

New Delhi, Jul 21 (PTI) The Union government has planned 51 new cruise circuits across 14 states and three Union Territories by 2027 under the Cruise Bharat Mission, an official statement said on Monday. Viking Cruises has announced its entry into India's river cruise market with Viking Brahmaputra, an 80-guest vessel scheduled to begin operations in late 2027, signalling heightened interest and investment in India's river cruise tourism sector, it added. Viking Brahmaputra, to be indigenously developed by Hooghly Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kolkata, will operate on National Waterway-2, the statement said. The river cruise tourism sector in India has witnessed notable growth, with the number of river cruise voyages on National Waterways increasing from 371 in 2023-24 to 443 in 2024-25. This 19.4 per cent growth underscores the rising appeal and operational efficiency of river cruises in India's inland waterways, it said. From just five vessels on three waterways in 2013-14, river cruise operations have expanded to 25 vessels across 13 national waterways in 2024-25. In the northeast, four more cruise terminals at Silghat, Biswanath Ghat, Neamati, and Guijan are proposed to be developed by 2027. In a first, Konkan Railway to operate Ro-Ro car service for Ganpati festival

Mumbai, Jul 21 (PTI) Konkan Railway on Monday said it would be running special roll on-roll off (Ro-Ro) train services from August 23 to September 11 between Kolad in Maharashtra and Verna in Goa for private cars during the upcoming Ganpati festival. The specially designed rake for the Ro-Ro car service, which will commence on August 23 from Kolad and on August 24 from Verna, can accommodate 40 cars per trip, with two cars loaded on each of the 20 wagons, a KR release said. 'The owners will have to shell out Rs 7875 inclusive of GST for transporting their car using Ro-Ro. They will have to pay Rs 4000 initially at the time of booking, and the balance on the day of the journey. Per car, a maximum of three persons will be allowed to travel in the attached 3AC or second seating coach. For this, each person will have to pay the prescribed fare, which is Rs 935 for 3AC and Rs 190 for the second seating coach," the release said. 'In the event of insufficient bookings (fewer than 16 cars), the trip will be cancelled and registration fees will be fully refunded. The bookings for the service will open between July 21 and August 13. Those who want to avail the service can make reservations at KR's Belapur or Verna-based offices with flexible payment options, including UPI and cash," it added. The service will run end-to-end between Kolad and Verna, with departures at 5 pm and arrivals at 5 am the following day, with car owners having to report at the starting point at 2 pm, about three hours before the departure time, the release said. KR pioneered the Ro-Ro service concept in India in 1999 for trucks, officials said, adding this is the first time it is being operated for private cars. On June 3, KR chairman-managing director Santosh Kumar Jha had assured to explore the possibility of launching Ro-Ro service for the private cars during the upcoming Ganapati festival if there is sufficient demand. During the Ganapati festival, among the biggest in the Konkan belt, lakhs of people travel from Mumbai and other parts of the state using various modes of transport, including cars, though many are left distressed due to the poor condition of the national highway.
