Savita, Sushila fly the flag for the old guard

Defender Deep Grace Ekka retired in January 2024. Rani Rampal then made her retirement official late last year. Vandana Katariya decided to call it a day two months ago.
The old guard of Indian women's hockey is slowly walking into the sunset, having led them into new territory over the last decade, chiefly the 2016 Rio Olympics when India qualified for the Games for the first time in 36 years and Tokyo 2021 when the then Rani-led side ended an unprecedented fourth — narrowly missing out on a medal.
But two stars of the old guard are still around, still delivering and willing to give it their all every time they step on to the pitch. Goalkeeper Savita Punia, who will turn 35 next month, and 33-year-old defender Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam are still going strong but many are wondering... for how long?
'First of all, I don't think we have anyone close who can substitute for Savita and Sushila. Moreover, if we talk about their fitness, I think it's very good. As long as you are performing and your fitness is there, there is no question of talking about their future,' India chief coach Harendra Singh told HT.
Given that this is the start of a new Olympic cycle, some have wondered if India would be better off with newer players. But with a combined 553 international caps between the two, the two former India captains have made full use of their experience to not just stay in the team but also become vital cogs in the setup.
Expectedly, Harendra has selected the two for the European leg of the Pro League that will be held from June 14. The matches in London, Antwerp and Berlin are important considering India has a chance of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in Belgium and Netherlands.
If they miss the opportunity, they will have a big chance at the Asia Cup to be played at Hangzhou in September. Next year is also significant given that it will see the World Cup and the Asian Games, which is a qualifier for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
'I have selected the team keeping in mind 2028. And it is all about fitness. It is not about being senior and junior. Their (Australia) tour (also) went well. So, I'm not looking at it from that angle at all. For example, among goalkeepers, (PR) Sreejesh, (Belgium's Vincent) Vanasch and all these players were in the same age group as Savita, even older than her. Yet they performed,' says Harendra.
'So, age is not a criteria for anyone, in sports in particular. And in hockey, because of rolling substitution athletes can remain injury free. The requirement of high-speed running you require per second, the players are meeting. That's more than enough. And I believe if defenders are seasoned, they always pay dividends and these two players are the most valuable defenders in the current team.'

New fitness plan for Tamil Nadu's Ranji Trophy hopefuls

CHENNAI: In a bid to ensure the Tamil Nadu men's probables for the Ranji Trophy are in the best shape at the start of the domestic season, the Robin Singh-led TNCA Academy and new head coach M Senthilnathan have devised a programme with focus on fitness and workload. As part of the programme, the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) franchises have been requested to let certain players follow the prescribed routine on their 'rest' days. 'After the players join the Ranji Trophy camp around the start of September, I want to use the time to hone their skills, formulate strategies and prepare for the matches ahead. We cannot allot a lot of time just for fitness,' Senthilnathan told TOI. 'We will try to follow the same (programme) at the beginning of the next TNCA first division campaign and during the Buchi Babu tournament (invitational red-ball event hosted by the TNCA). We want to set a base and gradually improve the players' fitness so that they report fully fit before the domestic season,' Senthilnathan added. Senthilnathan, who replaced L Balaji at the helm, said that the TNPL franchises have considered the bigger picture – TN performing well in domestic tournaments – and have been 'cooperative'. The first leg of the TNPL concluded on Wednesday in Coimbatore, while the second phase will begin on Friday in Salem. 'The TNCA had a summer camp for about 40 boys. The selectors then prepared a list of other boys, including the regulars. The plan is to monitor them during the TNPL. We have been in touch with the teams, players and coaches,' Senthilnathan said. 'On an average, the players have three days in between the TNPL matches, and we want them to make the best use of those. We have asked the players to follow the routine on certain days. While the TNCA Academy trainers have created a fitness routine, I have prepared a workload plan for batters and bowlers.' For Senthilnathan, 'volume' is key. 'A batter may face a maximum of 300 balls during the course of the TNPL. We do not know the number of balls he plays in training. Similarly, the fast bowlers will not have enough overs under their belt. When they are asked to suddenly bowl about 15 overs in a day (in a Ranji match), they struggle and get injured sometimes. We do not want such things to happen,' Senthilnathan explained. No Ranji group games at Chepauk The MA Chidambaram Stadium will not host any Ranji group games due to outfield renovation. 'Until the end of the T20 World Cup next year, there will be no other matches at Chepauk. The renovation work will get over in January and the TNCA will then have to hand over the venue to the ICC,' said a TNCA source. It means that the MAC stadium will miss out on Ranji group matches for the second season in a row. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . 'Don't s— else matter but winning': Jalen Hurts' savage Super Bowl speech went viral—then he tore Chiefs apart on NFL's biggest stage

Jalen Hurts' speech fueled Eagles' Super Bowl domination (Image via: Getty Images) In a moment that's now gone viral, Jalen Hurts delivered a raw, locker room speech that set the tone for one of the most dominant Super Bowl performances in NFL history. While critics handed Kansas City the crown before kickoff, Hurts reminded the world that talk doesn't win championships—execution does. And on Super Bowl Sunday, he left no doubt about who was built for the moment. A viral speech and a ruthless response— That's how hurts took Super Bowl personally On the eve of Super Bowl LIX, the narrative was clear: the Chiefs were on the verge of a historic three-peat, and the Eagles—once promising—had stumbled into the big game with too many questions. But inside Philadelphia's locker room, Jalen Hurts wasn't reading headlines. He was rewriting the ending. 'Last time being here, this s— changed my life,' Hurts told his teammates in a now-viral team video. 'It changed my mentality. I left that m— so empty." Hurts wasn't just revisiting a loss, he was fueling a fire. His message wasn't polished for cameras. It was raw, emotional, and real. 'Don't s— else matter but winning,' he added. 'Ask yourself how you want to be remembered.' Those words didn't just motivate. They ignited. IC Markets Mendaftar Undo Philadelphia jumped out to a 34-0 lead late in the third quarter—an almost unthinkable margin against a Mahomes-led squad. Hurts was electric, delivering a near-flawless performance that earned him Super Bowl MVP and silenced every lingering doubt about his place among the NFL's elite. By the fourth quarter, the game was so one-sided that the Eagles pulled their starters with minutes still on the clock. The final score, 40-22, barely reflected the dominance on display. The real headline, though, happened the night before. Hurts' speech has since racked up millions of views across social media platforms, praised not just for its intensity but for its honesty. It was a window into a player who wears past failure like armor and turns criticism into fuel. Pulisic calls criticism 'way out of line,' offered to play in friendlies while skipping Gold Cup

American star Christian Pulisic says while he decided to skip the CONCACAF Gold Cup, U.S. coaches turned down his offer to play in friendlies against Turkey and Switzerland because they wanted one roster for all games. 'You can talk about my performances, whatever you want, but to question my commitment especially toward the national team, in my opinion that's way out of line,' Pulisic said during an interview with former U.S. players Tony Meola, Jimmy Conrad and Charlie Davis on a CBS Sports Golazo podcast released Thursday. Pulisic played about 120 games for AC Milan and the U.S. over the past two seasons. 'Toward the second half and toward the end of the season, hey, my body just started talking to me and my mind and then I started to think what is best and — what is going to be best for me leading into next year and going into the World Cup,' he said. "Was that to play eight more games and then get no rest at all, go straight into preseason and then grind another year and then go straight into the World Cup? That's not what I thought was best for my body.' Ahead of their Gold Cup opener against Trinidad and Tobago this Sunday, the U.S. lost to Turkey 2-1 last weekend and to Switzerland 4-0 on Tuesday, giving the Americans their first four-game losing streak since 2007. 'I did want to be a part of at least the two friendlies. I did speak with the coaches and I asked and I wanted to be part of the team in whatever capacity I could and they said no," Pulisic said. "They said they only wanted one roster and that's the coach's decision. I fully respect that. I didn't understand it, but it is what it is.' Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey and Tim Howard have been critical of regulars not being on the current roster. 'It is tough because I looked up to those guys growing up, Pulisic said. "Some of these guys are my idols and I respect them so much as players.' 'Some of them, as well, even privately the way they can — the way they talk to me and clearly want to show support and be your friend and everything and then it goes and they say something slightly different publicly," he added. 'Does it hurt me? Am I surprised by it? I don't know, not really. People are always going to have their opinions but in the end I'm focused on how can I better myself.' Pulisic rejected some of the criticism aimed at the U.S. following losses to Panama and Canada in March at the CONCACAF Nations League final four. 'I didn't come out of that feeling like we were a weak team or performed really poorly,' he said. 'The only other thing that does frustrate me is this narrative that people want to create, that it's that we don't care, that's it's a commitment and stuff like that. That's something that in my opinion it can just be kind of a lazy take.' 'Just to say always, 'These guys don't care, bring guys that have pride,'' he added, 'that's just not — that's not really the answer, in my opinion. There's a lot more to a soccer game that you need to do to win than just to care, and I think a lot of us care.' Pulisic watched Tuesday's loss to Switzerland from afar, 'It's hard to watch. The results have been tough, for sure,' he said. 'There's still a lot of promising things that we can take from it. Going into the Gold Cup, I still think we can be excited and want to support this team. In these games, there's been some changes, some new faces, and it's not easy for those type of guys to step in and do an amazing job and expect great results right away.' Pulisic laughed when Davies pointed out Massimiliano Allegri will be his 13th team coach . 'Someone said I'm the problem," Pulisic said. soccer: /hub/soccer
