New fitness plan for Tamil Nadu's Ranji Trophy hopefuls
As part of the programme, the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) franchises have been requested to let certain players follow the prescribed routine on their 'rest' days. 'After the players join the Ranji Trophy camp around the start of September, I want to use the time to hone their skills, formulate strategies and prepare for the matches ahead. We cannot allot a lot of time just for fitness,' Senthilnathan told TOI.
'We will try to follow the same (programme) at the beginning of the next TNCA first division campaign and during the Buchi Babu tournament (invitational red-ball event hosted by the TNCA).
We want to set a base and gradually improve the players' fitness so that they report fully fit before the domestic season,' Senthilnathan added.
Senthilnathan, who replaced L Balaji at the helm, said that the TNPL franchises have considered the bigger picture – TN performing well in domestic tournaments – and have been 'cooperative'. The first leg of the TNPL concluded on Wednesday in Coimbatore, while the second phase will begin on Friday in Salem.
'The TNCA had a summer camp for about 40 boys. The selectors then prepared a list of other boys, including the regulars. The plan is to monitor them during the TNPL. We have been in touch with the teams, players and coaches,' Senthilnathan said.
'On an average, the players have three days in between the TNPL matches, and we want them to make the best use of those. We have asked the players to follow the routine on certain days.
While the TNCA Academy trainers have created a fitness routine, I have prepared a workload plan for batters and bowlers.'
For Senthilnathan, 'volume' is key. 'A batter may face a maximum of 300 balls during the course of the TNPL. We do not know the number of balls he plays in training. Similarly, the fast bowlers will not have enough overs under their belt. When they are asked to suddenly bowl about 15 overs in a day (in a Ranji match), they struggle and get injured sometimes.
We do not want such things to happen,' Senthilnathan explained.
No Ranji group games at Chepauk
The MA Chidambaram Stadium will not host any Ranji group games due to outfield renovation. 'Until the end of the T20 World Cup next year, there will be no other matches at Chepauk. The renovation work will get over in January and the TNCA will then have to hand over the venue to the ICC,' said a TNCA source. It means that the MAC stadium will miss out on Ranji group matches for the second season in a row.

Here's a look at India's upcoming Test series in the 2025-27 WTC cycle: 2 Tests vs West Indies (Home) India will next play a Test match in October 2025 against the West Indies. The two-match Test series against the Roston Chase-led side will start on October 2 in Ahmedabad. Narendra Modi Stadium will host the series opener from October 2 to 6, and the second Test is scheduled to take place at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. India last played a Test match against the West Indies team in July 2023 at Port of Spain. In that match, Virat Kohli scored a century for the Rohit Sharma-led side, but due to rain, it ended in a draw. In November 2025, 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) winners South Africa will line up against the Indian team. The two-match Test series between India and South Africa will start on November 14 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, and Guwahati's Barsapara Cricket Stadium will host the second Test from November 22 to 26. In the last Test series played against the Proteas in India, the Virat Kohli-led side won all three matches in October 2019. 2 Tests vs Sri Lanka (Away) The Indian men's cricket team will travel to Sri Lanka in July 2026 for a two-match series. India last toured New Zealand for a Test series in February-March 2020 but suffered defeat in both the matches under Virat Kohli's leadership. 5 Tests vs Australia (Home) In the first quarter of 2027, India will face Australia in a five-match Test series at home. Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan didn't hold back while criticising Karun Nair for his underwhelming show on the England tour. The middle-order batter failed to get going on his comeback series and scored just one half-century in the four matches he played. He got a call-up in the Indian team after eight years, after he proved himself in domestic cricket with a plethora of runs. Karun Nair failed to make an impact on his comeback Test series.(PTI) He piled up 863 runs in the 2024–25 Ranji Trophy at an average of 53.93, notching up four centuries and a couple of fifties, including a crucial knock in the final that steered his team to victory. But it was in the Vijay Hazare Trophy where he truly turned heads, racking up 779 runs in just eight innings at a staggering average of 389.50 and a strike rate of 124.04, hammering five centuries along the way. He failed to replicate this on his India comeback and scored just 205 runs in 8 innings at an average of 25.62. He did get some starts and played some exquisite drives to showcase his skills, but he failed to convert them into a big score. Pathan rated him four out of ten for his lack of consistency and criticised him for throwing his wicket away when he had the big opportunity to help India win the Lord's Test. 'Karun Nair gets four out of ten. Why? He didn't look particularly poor throughout the series. He kept getting starts consistently but managed only one half-century. He got plenty of opportunities. Cricket definitely gave him a second chance, but he couldn't capitalise on it the way he should have. Especially in the Lord's Test, he had a real chance to win the match for India but couldn't do it," Pathan said on his YouTube channel. 'Karun Nair looked a bit shaken' The former India all-rounder further pointed out his struggles against short balls at the Oval, which unsettled him on a couple of occasions, hinting at a chink in his armoury. 'Other than that, it often seemed like he was playing well, building up nicely, and then suddenly, he'd play a loose shot and get out. At the Oval, when the bouncer was used against him, he looked a bit shaken and seemed more unsettled and uncomfortable. So, he gets four points,' he added.
