New fitness plan for Tamil Nadu's Ranji Trophy hopefuls
CHENNAI: In a bid to ensure the Tamil Nadu men's probables for the Ranji Trophy are in the best shape at the start of the domestic season, the Robin Singh-led TNCA Academy and new head coach M Senthilnathan have devised a programme with focus on fitness and workload.
As part of the programme, the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) franchises have been requested to let certain players follow the prescribed routine on their 'rest' days. 'After the players join the Ranji Trophy camp around the start of September, I want to use the time to hone their skills, formulate strategies and prepare for the matches ahead. We cannot allot a lot of time just for fitness,' Senthilnathan told TOI.
'We will try to follow the same (programme) at the beginning of the next TNCA first division campaign and during the Buchi Babu tournament (invitational red-ball event hosted by the TNCA).
We want to set a base and gradually improve the players' fitness so that they report fully fit before the domestic season,' Senthilnathan added.
Senthilnathan, who replaced L Balaji at the helm, said that the TNPL franchises have considered the bigger picture – TN performing well in domestic tournaments – and have been 'cooperative'. The first leg of the TNPL concluded on Wednesday in Coimbatore, while the second phase will begin on Friday in Salem.
'The TNCA had a summer camp for about 40 boys. The selectors then prepared a list of other boys, including the regulars. The plan is to monitor them during the TNPL. We have been in touch with the teams, players and coaches,' Senthilnathan said.
'On an average, the players have three days in between the TNPL matches, and we want them to make the best use of those. We have asked the players to follow the routine on certain days.
While the TNCA Academy trainers have created a fitness routine, I have prepared a workload plan for batters and bowlers.'
For Senthilnathan, 'volume' is key. 'A batter may face a maximum of 300 balls during the course of the TNPL. We do not know the number of balls he plays in training. Similarly, the fast bowlers will not have enough overs under their belt. When they are asked to suddenly bowl about 15 overs in a day (in a Ranji match), they struggle and get injured sometimes.
We do not want such things to happen,' Senthilnathan explained.
No Ranji group games at Chepauk
The MA Chidambaram Stadium will not host any Ranji group games due to outfield renovation. 'Until the end of the T20 World Cup next year, there will be no other matches at Chepauk. The renovation work will get over in January and the TNCA will then have to hand over the venue to the ICC,' said a TNCA source. It means that the MAC stadium will miss out on Ranji group matches for the second season in a row.

Ecclestone returns to England squad for women's T20Is against India, Glenn misses out
London: Left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone makes a return to England women's T20I squad for the upcoming five-match series against India, starting on June 28 at Trent Bridge. England are coming off the back of a 3-0 win over the West Indies, which was also the first series in charge for new coach Charlotte Edwards and new captain Nat Sciver-Brunt. Earlier this month, Sophie had taken a break from domestic cricket to manage a quad injury and prioritise her well-being, though the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) had said that the time of the spinner being available for selection in the white-ball series against India. Sophie was previously left out of England's squads for the West Indies series while recovering from a knee injury, but played for Lancashire in domestic white-ball games. With Sophie back in England's scheme of things, as well as pacer Lauren Bell coming back into the set-up, leg-spinner Sarah Glenn misses out. 'It's great to have Soph back, and we're looking forward to having her back in the group. She has obvious qualities, and she'll be an asset to us. It does mean Sarah Glenn misses out, we are blessed with a strong group of spinners, and we unfortunately can't play them all. It's now a great opportunity for Sarah to go back to The Blaze and play some competitive cricket in the Vitality Blast,' said Charlotte in an ECB statement on Friday. After the five T20Is are held at Trent Bridge, Bristol County Ground, The Oval, Old Trafford, and Edgbaston from June 28 to July 12, England and India will play a three-match ODI series, with the ECB saying the hosts' squad will be confirmed at a later date. The 50-over series will continue the finetuning of combinations for India and England, especially with the Women's ODI World Cup set to happen from September 30 to November 2. 'We're really looking forward to taking on India. They're one of the best sides in the world, and it'll be a huge test for us.' 'There was a lot to be happy about in the West Indies series, but equally lots of things we want to keep improving on – we're always looking at getting better. Five games against India in front of big crowds at great venues will serve us really well. This is a significant series for us with the countdown well and truly underway towards the home ICC Women's T20 World Cup," added Charlotte. England T20I squad: Em Arlott, Tammy Beaumont, Lauren Bell, Alice Capsey, Charlie Dean, Sophia Dunkley, Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Filer, Amy Jones, Nat Sciver-Brunt (captain), Paige Scholfield, Linsey Smith, Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Issy Wong

Then he told me that this was a dash shot, he got pretty elaborative. He said I am gonna cut your throat off and then I replied saying you see this bat in my hand? You know where I am gonna hit you with this bat. I remember I was so angry when I hit Broadie for six sixes, I looked at Dimitri Mascarenas and then I looked at Freddie.
