Richmond County School System seeks input on academic calendars, school climate

Yahoo12-02-2025

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – The Richmond County School System (RCSS) is looking for feedback on proposed academic calendars for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 school years, in addition to input on school climate.
According to a press release from RCSS sent on Feb. 12, they would like input on the calendar options students, parents, guardians, and community members.
The two calendar choices are as follows:
Calendar Option A: The first day for elementary school is Aug. 5, while K-8, magnet, middle, and high schools begin on Aug. 6. This option includes one PowerUp Asynchronous Learning Day per semester, allowing students to complete assignments remotely.
Calendar Option B: All schools begin on Aug. 5, with four early release days throughout the year to provide additional opportunities for parent-teacher conferences.
The deadline to submit feedback on the calendars is March 4, 2025.
RCSS is also looking to receive school climate survey results on instruction, school environments and student support services. Parents and guardians can access the school climate survey through their child's school website.
According to RCSS, the survey results will be presented to the Board of Education in March before a final recommendation is made during that month's meeting.
'The academic calendar and school climate play a critical role in shaping the learning experience, and we want to ensure that every voice is heard,' said Marcus Allen, assistant superintendent of Support Services. 'We encourage parents, students and community members to share their perspectives so we can create a school environment that supports success for all.'

Parents charged in death of 7-year-old hit by car in North Carolina

GASTONIA, N.C. (WJBF) – The Gastonia Police Department has filed criminal charges against the parents of a 7-year-old boy who died after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross the road on last Tuesday evening. Parents, Jessica Ivey and Samuele Jenkins, have been charged with Felony Involuntary Manslaughter, Felony Child Neglect, and Misdemeanor Child Neglect. On Tuesday, May 27th, at approximately 5:55 p.m., officers responded to a reported traffic collision. Upon arrival, police found that a 7-year-old boy had been struck by a Jeep Cherokee being driven by a 76-year-woman. The preliminary investigation revealed that the child was attempting to cross the street outside of a crosswalk with another 10-year-old boy, when he entered the roadway and was hit. The child was initially transported the hospital here he later died. In a Facebook post the Gastonia P.D. said, 'While the Gastonia Police Department offers its deepest sympathies to the family for the heartbreaking loss of their child, the investigation revealed that the children involved were unsupervised at the time the boy stepped into traffic. In such cases, adults must be held accountable for their responsibilities to ensure a safe environment for their children.' At this time, there is no evidence of speeding or wrongdoing on the part of the driver, therefore no charges have been filed. The driver continues to be cooperative and the incident remains under active investigation by the Gastonia Police Department's Traffic Division. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
