Yeah, the times are a-changin' from the climate action rah-rahs of just a few years ago.
That sudden silence has a name in some circles: greenhushing, where companies or governments erase environmental commitments, fearing potential political, investor or customer backlash.
But some experts believe the work is continuing quietly. What's more, they say, those that still do it vocally can serve as a more genuine example of how to champion climate action.
"When you're talking about sustainability and climate-related disclosures, a lot of it is politically driven," explains Kimberly Logue Ortega, who advises companies on energy and environment compliance through her work at the consulting firm J.S. Held.
She sees greenhushing as a response to regulations in Europe and Canada cracking down on climate promises that cannot be proven or supported — a practice known as greenwashing.
Beyond the political pressure from above, Ortega sees another pressure from below.
"I think what we're likely to see moving forward is more investor-driven litigation," she told CBC News, speaking from Little Rock, Ark. "Attempting to drive companies to either expand or restrict their environmental disclosures."
A series of recent reports by the climate consultancy South Pole found greenhushing to be a trend among the hundreds of companies it surveyed. Its 2024 report echoes Ortega's view that regulatory compliance and fear of scrutiny mean companies are "no longer communicating their climate strategies and goals with confidence."
But not everyone agrees greenhushing is widespread. A recent PricewaterhouseCoopers report analyzed more than 4,000 companies that made climate commitments, finding while 16 per cent were "decelerating" targets, 37 per cent were actually increasing ambitions.
According to the report, this suggests "an era of quiet progress, where companies avoid publicizing climate pledges that can open them up to unwanted scrutiny and instead focus on making progress far from the spotlight."
Some experts also don't see this withdrawal as a bad thing.
"Greenhushing is often portrayed as something negative," said Frederic Hans, of the non-profit NewClimate Institute. But he disagrees with the idea that strict regulations are too tough on companies, forcing them to hide their climate ambition.
"Because we see many companies, particularly the real front-running companies, still disclose, still do things, still come forward with new targets," Hans told CBC News from Berlin.
He and his team highlight some of those companies in a report, the 2025 Corporate Climate Responsibility Monitor, profiling industries from fashion to agri-food to tech.
Though no company rose to the highest standards on climate pledges, Hans argues progress has been made — and that demanding companies back up their sustainable claims provides clarity and leadership.

Sandra McGuire said: "This is perhaps a far more complicated question than just paying for air conditioning. We are already experiencing the beginning effects of climate change, and it is bound to get far worse. The Big Picture: The plants you can grow in Canada are changing
Global warming is changing Canada's growing zones. According to the federal government's latest Plant Hardiness Zones map — which is based on climate averages from 1991-2020 — growing zones have changed across much of the country. The hardiness zones indicate what kinds of plants, crops or trees can grow in an area. Generally, the higher the zone number, the more moderate the weather is, and the less cold-resistant a plant has to be to survive. Here, we see Zone 9A, the most moderate zone found in Canada. No municipalities were in this zone during the 1961-1990 period, but now some 30 municipalities in the Victoria and Vancouver areas are. In this (relatively) balmy zone, you can grow cold-hardy palms and even citrus. Even though the shifting zones are a sign of a larger problem — climate change throwing weather patterns into disarray — the data brings new opportunities for farmers to expand their fields or try new crops.

Can charred wood help farmers — and the climate?

In a rolling field in Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley, the soil in one row of grapevines is littered with charred fragments of wood.
The charcoal-like substance is something that scientists and farmers hope will turn waste into a tool to improve the health of the soil and store carbon long term.
"Instead of losing everything in the atmosphere, we can stick … that carbon in the soil," said Vicky Lévesque, a research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Kentville, N.S.
Scientists and companies in Nova Scotia are exploring how a material called biochar can be used and produced in the province. Lévesque says it's an opportunity to support growers while fighting climate change.
She is testing biochar on grapevines at 11 sites in the valley to see how it affects carbon sequestration, soil biodiversity, plant growth and nutrient leaching. The experiment will run for four years.
"Talking with the grape industry, [they] see some issues in their vineyards, such as soil compaction, nitrogen loss and also water retention. And so we … brought that idea to test biochar in their vineyards."
What is biochar?
Biochar is made by heating organic materials — usually wood, but also crop waste, manure and even sewage — to temperatures as high as 1,000 C. That process, known as pyrolysis, happens without oxygen, meaning materials don't burn, but transform to a gas and a material that's almost entirely solid carbon.
That material is thought to benefit soil in a number of ways.
Biochar is packed with tiny pores. Those pores provide habitat for beneficial microorganisms; a tablespoon of biochar can have as much surface area as a football field.
Biochar also retains water — as much as 27 grams per gram of biochar, allowing it to hold and release water over time — and aerates soils, helping roots penetrate.
Atlantic Canada's freeze-thaw cycle causes soils to lose nitrogen from fertilizers to the atmosphere, costing farmers money and producing greenhouse gas emissions. Experiments suggest that biochar is able to retain that nitrogen, reducing emissions and fertilizer use.
Biochar is almost 90 per cent carbon, as roasting without oxygen prevents the carbon in the wood from being released into the atmosphere.
Soils in Atlantic Canada now lose a half-tonne of carbon a year, mainly through tillage. Biochar could help reverse that.
Dalhousie assistant professor Sonil Nanda, who is researching the production and use of biochar in applications ranging from agriculture to medicine, said biochar can help Canada make progress on climate change goals, especially when using material that would otherwise go to waste.
"Canada can be a leader in tapping into these underutilized residues that come from the agricultural sector, forestry sector, municipal solid waste, forest fire wood," he said. "Biochar is one of those integral components … that will help us move toward net zero."
Barriers to adoption
Lévesque said one current barrier to adoption is the cost; the experiment is using 10 tonnes of biochar per hectare, which adds up to about $10,000. Another is the availability of biochar, as there are currently no large-scale producers in Atlantic Canada.
A Halifax-based company is working to address that.
Sawmills in the province currently have no destination for their residual wood — the remaining material left after usable lumber is cut — due to the closure of Northern Pulp, a mill that was shuttered in 2020.
If that material is left to rot or is burned in an open fire, "that is at risk of going back into the form of CO2 after the tree worked for 50 or 100 years to make it into carbon," said Don LeBlanc, president of RDA Atlantic Inc.
Instead, RDA is proposing to turn that material into biochar.
RDA has been working with a reactor design developed and patented in Poland; that reactor, which can weigh up to 40 tonnes, produces biochar in large amounts. RDA is trying to bring the technology to North America, and LeBlanc said they're currently in discussions with a sawmill in Nova Scotia to install it.
In the meantime, RDA is selling biochar that's produced in Poland locally, as a way of generating awareness among the public.
"As the market builds for the product, then we'll be in a better position to justify the construction of the first production facility in Atlantic Canada," said LeBlanc.

As I've written here and elsewhere ad nauseam for decades, defence is the most economically productive form of public investment as it assists high technology manufacturing and research and the per capita personnel costs are relatively modest, and it is the most efficient adult education opportunity for the members of the Armed Forces. But five per cent of Canadian GDP is over $100 billion in a country overloaded with debt and taxes and running a chronic annual federal deficit. Article content The prime minister is conducting a rather prudish flirtation with pipelines, trying to reconcile the absolute necessity of increasing Canada's national income by satisfying some of the world's raging appetite for our oil and gas with years of his mad green jeremiads and fantasies, producing such inspired nostrums as Carney's concept of the carbon-neutral pipeline, as if it was proposed to deliver rosewater by pipeline to export markets or eastern Canada. There has been no hint of where the prime minister is leaning in budgetary terms but some hard choices are going to have to be made soon. Carney has done us no favours by tagging along behind the impotent posturing of the French and British, who, ever since the British promised the same territory to the Jews and Arabs at the same time in the Balfour Declaration of 1917, have never had any policy in the region except to await American initiatives and then posture as being better disposed to the Arabs. He took over the government that ran this great and rich country into a ditch of capital outflows, declining relative prosperity, slow growth, an unsustainably large public sector, an almost collapsed health-care system and a state of national defence so anemic we would have trouble fending off an attack from angry Greenlanders. Canada is a treasure house with a talented and motivated population and political institutions that have been generally successful though they're in need of renovation. Article content Quebec's transformation into a linguistic monoculture and distinctly second-tier economy was done consciously and deliberately. A fascinating social experiment, but why are we subsidizing it? Article content Article content Western aspirations unfolded differently. Former prime minister Pierre Trudeau's national energy program mandated below-market energy prices for eastern Canada at the West's expense. Alberta's revenue from oil and natural gas fell from about 60 per cent of its budget in 1981 to just over 20 by mid-decade, while unemployment reached 11 per cent, tripling between 1981 and 1983. Tens of thousands lost their homes and businesses as the '80s became a lost decade. Unfortunately, the large western contingent in Prime Minister Brian Mulroney's 1984 majority failed to change the pattern. Ottawa remained focused on Quebec — notably awarding a massive fighter-jet servicing contract to Montreal's Canadair in 1986, despite Winnipeg-based Bristol Aerospace's cheaper, superior bid. Chalk up another $3.5 billion (2025 dollars) to Quebec at the West's expense. Article content Westerners have responded with repeated calls for change. The Reform party, founded in 1987, had explicitly federalist goals — 'The West wants in' — but was not exactly welcomed by Central Canada. Subsequently, there was the 2001 'firewall' letter by Stephen Harper and 'Calgary School' academics, followed by then-premier Jason Kenney's Fair Deal Panel (2020) and the Free Alberta Strategy. All sought ways to free Alberta from the arbitrary whims of the federal government. Article content Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's 2022 Alberta Sovereignty Within a United Canada Act aims to counter unconstitutional federal laws, while her 2025 Alberta Next initiative kicked off by demonstrating how myriad Liberal laws and policies cripple Alberta — to the tune of $500 billion in lost investment capital over the last 10 years. With the Mansell numbers, that adds up to $1.1 trillion in economic punishment meted upon one province. Article content So far, no love from Central Canada. Reaction seems rather to channel the old Liberal adage from the late Keith Davey — 'Screw the West, we'll take the rest.' In 2001, Jean Chrétien mused that Alberta's 'fortunate position' was 'creating pressure on neighbouring provinces' and that others had 'the right to have their share of these opportunities.' Article content Article content More recently, Justin Trudeau observed in 2012 that, 'Canada is struggling right now because Albertans are controlling the … social democratic agenda.' Asked whether Canada would be better off with more Quebecers in power than Albertans, Trudeau replied: 'I'm a Liberal, so of course I think so.' Recent Donald Trump-fuelled Liberal Maple-Leafism also leaves many westerners cold, given that five minutes ago, Trudeau said Canada was an irredeemably racist post-national state. Article content Meanwhile, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet says Alberta's complaints are mundanely economic, and is 'not certain that oil and gas qualifies to define a culture.' Seemingly, decades of lost livelihoods and unrealized potential are mundane. Article content Kudos to such multi-generational consistency, from Pierre Trudeau asking farmers in Winnipeg, 'Why should I sell your wheat?' (1968), to Chrétien and Justin Trudeau, with little sign that the government of Prime Minister Mark Carney will abandon course. Given one party's 60-year imposition of policies inimical to the West — and that it's in power more often than not — the question facing Albertans, and westerners more broadly is: will we continue to acquiesce? As Reform party founder Preston Manning said: 'I don't support secession but, if separate, I wouldn't advocate joining.' Article content

Toronto woman at heart of lipstick Ponzi scheme gets four years in prison and $610K fine

An Ontario Ponzi scheme operator who purported to be making lipstick to bilk her victims out of millions of dollars has been sentenced to four years in prison and fined $610,856. Article content If she can't pay the fine levied by the Ontario Court of Justice within five years of her prison sentence expiring, Glenda Marie Esteves must serve another 18 months behind bars. Article content Article content 'I find Ms. Esteves is entirely responsible for the financial loss of every victim of her fraudulent scheme. She was the sole beneficiary of the millions of dollars she fraudulently obtained. The location of the money is unknown,' Justice Cidalia Faria wrote in a recent decision out of Toronto. Article content The Crown filed 22 victim impact statements in Esteves' case. Article content Article content 'Reading these statements is to read a litany of heartache and hardship, broken promises and broken dreams, deep betrayal, and significant financial loss,' Faria said. 'The impact has been wide-ranging, including not only negative economic consequences, but psychological damage so severe that some victims became physically ill.' Article content Personal losses for her victims ranged from 'as low as $8,750 to as high as $273,578.15,' said the judge, noting these 'were the life savings they lost, or the debts they incurred to invest and are now liable to pay for.' Article content The Crown pegged total losses for Esteves' victims at nearly $5 million, but the judge determined that their total 'readily ascertainable' losses were $610,856. Article content Esteves' 'elaborate fraud,' took place over four years, said the judge. Article content 'She was the sole owner of 'Mac Glamour Inc.' Both before and after she incorporated this company, she enticed investors to invest in her venture with high rates of return,' Faria said. Article content Article content 'She purported to make and sell lipstick. She claimed to obtain materials from MAC, a well-known cosmetics company, mix these materials, create her own lipstick, and then sell these lipsticks to a modelling company called Q Modelling NYC. Ms. Esteves claimed the profit margin was the difference between the cost of the raw materials from MAC, and the sale price of the finished product to Q Modelling.' Article content Article content But 'the actual production of lipsticks did not exist,' said the judge. Article content 'Ms. Esteves never made lipsticks. The money investors provided her was never invested in the company called Mac Glamour as she claimed.' Article content Instead, Esteves 'obtained investment money by forging various banking documents and used them to persuade investors that Mac Glamour had millions of dollars in a corporate account. Mac Glamour had no such account.' Article content She used the forged bank documents to put investors who were owed money at ease 'and persuaded them to invest further amounts,' Faria said. 'Money that was paid out as an 'investment return' was money received from other investors. The business model was thereby operated as a Ponzi scheme.' Article content Many of her victims 'were from her ethnic community of Filipino origin,' said the judge. 'The total number of victims Ms. Esteves defrauded has never been quantified.' Article content Esteves pleaded guilty in 2022 to fraud over $5,000, uttering a forged document, and committing theft under false pretenses, between January 2015 and October 2019. Article content 'Born in the Philippines in 1974, Ms. Esteves is an educated 50-year-old married woman with two adult children,' the judge said in her decision dated July 31. Article content 'Esteves is the oldest of eight siblings, six of whom still live in the Philippines, while she cares for and provides for the youngest sibling who lives with her in Toronto. She grew up in poverty and left her country of origin to make a better life for herself.' Article content Her husband was also charged in the Ponzi scheme investigation. But Esteves told the court she 'deceived' him as well, and he 'is not responsible for any fraudulent conduct.' Article content The author of her pre-sentence report noted 'Esteves has lost support in her Filipino community as many were her victims. She has become sad and depressed as a result, decreasing her social interactions, and focusing on her family.' Article content Esteves expressed remorse, telling the court she was in 'full control of the operation' and that she 'takes full responsibility.' Article content Esteves said the venture 'progressed from borrowing money, accumulating debt, and then, when she was unable to pay her loans, she started the elaborate scheme to obtain money. She lied to people and her lies became bigger. She said she began to believe her own lies which spiraled her out of control. She apologized to the victims, her family and her community accepting the entirety of her blameworthiness.' Article content One victim, Anthony Wang, 'lost his savings which made him unable to buy a home for his six-person family,' said the decision. 'They were all forced to live in an 800 (square) foot apartment during the pandemic. He had to move to Alberta to be able to afford a home. He became physically ill and developed a medical condition that cost him financially and made him miss work. He does not trust his own family anymore as they were the ones who invited him into the scheme.' Article content
