Steelers Add Another Memphis Alum, Sign Ballhawking Safety
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to signed safety Quindell Johnson, per his agency, Universal Sports Management. Johnson is a 6-foot, 208-pound safety out of Memphis in his third professional season. He was most recently with the San Francisco 49ers, but was waived on May 13. Advertisement The 25-year-old former undrafted free agent first joined the Los Angeles Rams in 2023, but was released during final roster cuts. He was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Bears and played nine games during his rookie season in Chicago. He played 35 snaps of defense, playing both in the box and as a free safety. He also played 106 snaps of defense. In total, Johnson recorded three tackles and intercepted Blaine Gabbert in a game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Last summer, Johnson was again waived coming out of training camp. He spent the entire 2024 season on the Los Angeles Rams practice squad, but did not appear in a game. He was released by the Rams on Jan. 7 and signed with the 49ers on Jan. 21 before being cut after the draft. Quindell Johnson, Memphis Athletics A New Orleans native, Johnson joined Memphis in 2018 and spent five seasons with the Tigers. He redshirted as a true freshman and started four games in 2019 before becoming a three-year starter. Advertisement In 2021, Johnson had 105 tackles, and he followed that up with an AAC-leading four interceptions in 2022. He was a three-time All-AAC selection. In pre-draft testing, Johnson ran a 4.53-second 40-yard dash, and posted a 4.24-second shuttle run, but had a below-average 32.5-inch vertical for an overall Relative Athletic Score of 7.24. His signing continues the Steelers strong trend of signing players with Memphis area connections lately. He joins Calvin Austin III, Kenneth Gainwell and Roc Taylor as Memphis alumni. Cornerback Brandin Echols is also a Memphis native. The Steelers do not currently have an open roster spot, though they will be able to place tight end Donald Parham on injured reserve after his season-ending injury on Tuesday. Finals Fever: Fans at home support Panthers in Stanley Cup Finals opening game
Dana Ross danced in line with her friends at the Amerant Bank Arena concession stand, wearing a custom 'Ross' Florida Panthers jersey autographed by players in Sharpie across the large '44' on her back. She's been a fan of the Panthers for 31 years, she said, and her family were original season ticket holders back when the team first played in Miami in 1993. 'Ever since I was a little girl, I loved going to the games,' she told the Miami Herald before the first game of the Stanley Cup Finals' opening game between the Florida Panthers and the Edmonton Oilers. 'I cried like a baby last year when we won. So, anything now is just a bonus!' The story among many of the Panthers' long term fans, wearing sombreros lined with stuffed rats and Stanley Cup silver chains, is the same. They lined up in 'Barkov' and 'Ekblad' jerseys outside of the arena before 7 p.m., eagerly waiting to enter despite the fact that the first game of the playoffs would take place over 2,500 miles away in Edmonton, Alberta. Before puck drop, they cheered as each of the starting Panthers flashed on the jumbo-tron. Screams erupted for goalie Sergei Barbovsky, while the boos were deafening for Oilers star Connor McDavid. After the first period with the Panthers up 2-1, the energy on the concourse skyrocketed. A DJ played hit pop and rock songs in the 21+ Jameson Bar, the line for a Mister Softee sundae in a Barkov helmet stretched for three sections, and 'go, cats!' echoed all the way into the bathrooms. 'This is my first time at a watch party, my first time in this kind of atmosphere,' lifetime fan Mike Whitt told the Miami Herald. 'It's so much fun watching the game this way, such a great time. With playoff tickets being so expensive, this is a great way to do it. Now I definitely want to come again.'

Pittsburgh Penguins name new head coach
The Pittsburgh Penguins have named Dan Muse as the team's 23rd head coach in franchise history. Muse, 42, has 20 years of coaching experience, including five seasons in the NHL as an assistant coach with the New York Rangers and Nashville Predators, the Penguins stated in a release. He led the teams to three total divisional titles and two President's Trophies during his five years in the NHL. Advertisement Muse is a native of Canton, Mass. He has won championships at the NCAA, USHL, and IIHF U18 and U20 level, the Penguins stated. 'During this process, we met with many candidates who we felt would have been a fit as the next head coach of the Penguins, but ultimately, Dan Muse stood out as the best choice,' said Kyle Dubas, president of hockey operations and general manager for the Penguins. 'What separated Dan was his ability to develop players, win at all levels where he has been a head coach and his consistent success coaching special teams in the NHL. From his success in developing college and junior players, to his impactful work with veteran players during his time in the NHL, Dan has shown a proven ability to connect with players at all stages of their careers and help them to reach their potential.' 'Additionally, his leadership of special teams units at the NHL level in both Nashville and New York produced elite results consistently. His overall body of work, attention to detail and vision for our group showed us that he is the best coach to take our team forward. We're excited to welcome Dan, and his family, to the city of Pittsburgh.' Muse's coaching career began at the collegiate level, where he spent six seasons as an assistant coach and associate head coach with Yale University, helping the Bulldogs to a National Championship in 2013, the Penguins stated. Before that, he spent one season each at Sacred Heart University and Williams College. He began his coaching career at Milton Academy in 2005. Advertisement After departing from the NCAA level, Muse served as head coach of the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League from 2015-17. He led the team to the top record in the Eastern Conference and third-best record in the USHL en route to the franchise's first-ever Clark Cup Championship, the Penguins stated.
