Should ACC support 14-team playoff proposal now?
Yahoo Sports national columnist Dan Wetzel, senior college sports reporter Ross Dellenger and Sports Illustrated's Pat Forde explain why the ACC may want to reverse course on it's initial rejection of an expanded playoff with more guarantees for SEC, Big Ten teams. Hear the full conversation on the 'College Football Enquirer' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more If you are the ACC, let me ask this one. They are opposed to the 14 team playoff. It's set up where the SEC and the Big 10 start the season with 4 automatic bids. It basically codifies that they are the weaker league, but it does give you Two spots. Guaranteed in a playoff. You go to the SEC. And you're gonna find out how hard it is. Do you use reverse course on the playoff and say we're gonna take it and hope. That the path to the playoff with the addition, somehow rekindles the romance between FSU and Clemson and the ACC. Pat, what do you think? Maybe, uh, you know, it's. It's a tough one to walk back. I would like to see people stand up for what's best as a whole for college football. But those things are fungible and tend to take a backseat to what's best for the ACC. And that might be an easier deal for Jim Phillips to sell at this point. While there is growing disinterest in the Big 12 and in the ACC in the format that the SEC and Big 10 are exploring this 44221 deal. Those two leagues are mainly um maybe not in support of it fully because of just the perception, um, just starting the season in the hole, you know, two spots, but they actually, they know, and folks in the Big 12, I think know too that You know, guaranteed yourself too is not bad. Um, I think it, it might be good for, uh, even some leagues, but it's just the thought of starting the season. Two spots in the hole. The path to the playoff and thus the path to the success initiative in the ACC, which again is a lot of money. If you make it to the ACC team makes it to the championship game, the path to there is, is easier. Um, you know, so if you can consistently make the playoff, and that'll probably guarantee you, you know, 10 to 12 million um in success initiative, and then if you get the top spot in the TV viewership, The over the, the top couple spots and you get an extra 15 million. I mean, boom, it's 2025 million right there. And um and that kind of helps you close the gap um a little bit with the SEC and the, and the big 0. Close

Battle for 2025 & 2026 College Football Playoff format continues
700 episodes of College Football Enquirer later, Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger and SI's Pat Forde are somehow STILL talking about the College Football Playoff format. Ross returns from Dallas, Texas with the latest news from the CFP Management Committee on impending changes to both the 2025 & 2026 playoff structure. These two playoffs are separate events but the decisions surrounding them are linked as the Big 12 and ACC try to leverage the power they DO have in the 2025 playoff into greater concessions from the SEC & Big Ten when they take control of the 2026 playoff. From potential changes to the quarterfinal bowl games, to a switch to straight seeding, to additional automatic qualification—Dan, Ross & Pat cover it all. Pat dives into his recent article about a gambling ring that allegedly tampered with obscure men's basketball games including the likes of Temple, East Carolina, Mississippi Valley State and more. Finally, the People's Court attempts to answer the oh-so-important question: which SEC team has the most fans currently incarcerated? Why Oklahoma coach Brent Venables has no option but to win now
(This article was written with the assistance of AI and reviewed by our editorial team to ensure accuracy. Please reach out to us if you notice any mistakes.) Oklahoma coach Brent Venables is feeling the heat. It's not just a warm, welcoming glow; it's a 10 on the pressure scale, and it's palpable. As the Sooners enter Year 2 in the SEC, Venables is smack-dab in a must-win scenario. You could feel it on the latest episode of College Football Enquirer, as Dan Wetzel, Pat Forde and Ross Dellenger discussed the critical juncture Venables finds himself in. 'This is a 10 [on the hot seat], without question,' Forde said. Just how serious is a "10"? The folks in Norman expect greatness, and Venables' seat is getting hotter with every game. The reasons are clear: Venables has not shown the developmental growth that's needed. Forde didn't hold back, noting, 'It's not been good so far for Venables ... the entry into the SEC was rough.' What do you do when your archrival is flying high like Texas? Winning more is essentially the only option for redemption. Back-to-back seasons that fizzled out below Oklahoma's storied standards have alumni and fans itching for success. Dellenger questioned last summer's contract extension for Venables, sharing, 'I don't exactly know why they gave him a contract extension.' Among the challenges the Sooners face this season? A tough schedule as they tear through the SEC gauntlet. Venables' time is now ... or maybe never. For Oklahoma, the SEC is no stepping stone; it's the proving ground. And the man in the hot seat must prove himself worthy or face the consequences. It's win-or-go-home season for Brent Venables.
